Supporting Teaching And Learning Reform In College Mathematics: Finding Value In Communities Of Practice, Kelly Gomez Johnson, Paula M. Jakopovic, Christine Von Renesse

Teacher Education Faculty Publications

Improving college STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) student learning outcomes is an ongoing area of focus in Institutions of Higher Education (IHE). This reform includes challenging, changing, and adapting both teaching practices and the learning environment. Communities of practice (CoPs) can support faculty in making these shifts; however, creating large-scale instructional changes in STEM education requires a more careful look at the existing systems and structures in place. In this paper, we investigate a network of regional CoPs composed mainly of mathematics faculty from IHE focused on teaching with inquiry methods. Understanding what faculty need and value to support their …

Debriefing With Pearls & Watson’S Caritas, Heather A. Uccello Oct 2021

Debriefing With Pearls & Watson’S Caritas, Heather A. Uccello

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Debriefing, an important aspect of students’ clinical experience, is a reflective, critical thinking analysis and communication strategy that provides rapid feedback after either a simulated or genuine clinical event. To teach this higher-level critical thinking skill throughout the learning process, nursing programs require specific methodology and faculty expertise. The National League for Nursing supports nurse educators having a theory-based strategy, formal training, and ongoing competency evaluation. Informed by Jean Watson’s Theory and the Promoting Excellence and Reflective Learning in Simulation standardized debriefing tool methodology, this project outlines a framework that nursing schools can use to potentially improve the debriefing process …

数学问题解决的行程问题测试与学生的解题策略分析: 混合项目反应理论模型, Chunlian Jiang, Do-Hong Kim, Chuang Wang Oct 2021

数学问题解决的行程问题测试与学生的解题策略分析: 混合项目反应理论模型, Chunlian Jiang, Do-Hong Kim, Chuang Wang

Chinese/English Journal of Educational Measurement and Evaluation |

Analysis Of A Mathematical Problem-Solving Test On Speed And Students' Strategies: A Mixed Item Response Theory Approach, Chunlian Jiang, Do-Hong Kim, Chuang Wang Oct 2021

Analysis Of A Mathematical Problem-Solving Test On Speed And Students' Strategies: A Mixed Item Response Theory Approach, Chunlian Jiang, Do-Hong Kim, Chuang Wang

Chinese/English Journal of Educational Measurement and Evaluation | 教育测量与评估双语期刊

The present study used the mixed item response theory (IRT) model to identify qualitatively distinct subgroups of sixth-grade students with respect to their performance on word problems on speed. A total of 345 Singaporean students and 361 Chinese students took a problem-solving test on speed. The mixed IRT analysis revealed two latent classes — the algebra proficient group and the algebra novice group. The algebra proficient group was more likely to use traditional algebraic and arithmetic strategies to solve the problems, whereas the algebra novice group was more likely to use model drawing, unitary, and guess-and-check strategies, in addition to …

Reflecting On An Academic Career: Associations Between Past Mentoring Investments And Career Benefits, Jordan Boeder, Veronica Fruiht, Kevin Erikson, Sarah Hwang, Giovanna Blanco, Thomas Chan

Psychology | Faculty Scholarship

Receiving mentoring is associated with lasting career benefits ; however, less is known about long-term career gains for mentors. A national sample of retired academics were surveyed to examine associations between past mentoring behaviors and current evaluations of their careers. Participants (N = 277) were on average 73.6 (SD = 6.2) years old with 34.9 (SD = 8.0) years of occupational tenure and 7.7 (SD = 5.8) years post-retirement. Structural equation modeling results demonstrated that having more protégés (β = .19, p = .024) and engaging in more mentoring behaviors (β = .18, p …
