With the importance of STEM skills in future employment and other disciplines, effective instructional strategies must be identified to enhance early and sustained access to STEM for students with ASD. However, the literature identifying effective STEM-specific supports and practices for this population of students is sparse and regarding engineering, there are no empirical studies that focus on teaching engineering skills to students with ASD. Therefore, the article aims to provide an overview of the available literature on the perspectives …

An Analysis Of Higher-Order Thinking Requirement Of The 2018 Psat/Nmsqt, Ryan Esdale

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

As educators and school leaders work towards building students’ capacity throughout a student's academic career, the goal is to facilitate opportunities for students to develop college and career readiness skills that can be applied to novel and challenging problems long after high school graduation. Hess’ Cognitive Rigor Matrix (HCRM) is a tool that objectively and effectively measures prompts, learning exercises, or test questions by blending the Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy and Webb’s Depth of Knowledge. Thus, a learning environment that cultivates higher-order thinking skills can be accurately examined and provide educators, researchers, and school leaders with data to make more informed …

Using Narrative Inquiry To Explore Critical Reflection And Self-Awareness In Equity Leadership Development, Laura Hallberg, Louise J. Santiago Oct 2021

Using Narrative Inquiry To Explore Critical Reflection And Self-Awareness In Equity Leadership Development, Laura Hallberg, Louise J. Santiago

Benerd College Faculty Articles

Critical reflection and self-awareness are two of the most crucial components in developing equity-centered leaders (Dugan and Humbles, 2018; Madsen, 2020; Patti, Madrazo, Senge, and Stern, 2015). Leading for equity requires the leader to face both personal bias and professional challenges (Boske, 2014). Many leaders are willing to engage in the work of leading for equity but lack clarity about where to start and how to proceed, often seeking out external tools. Using narrative inquiry, this study collected leaders’ stories to understand the participants’ perspective of self, the understanding of their own journey, and the connections to their leadership work.

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Children with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) commonly present with oral language weaknesses which disrupt the development of literacy and impede related academic progress. While there is evidence to support the delivery of manualised Tier 2 interventions with this population, little is known about the effects of Tier 1 interventions. A retrospective cohort comparison was used to evaluate whether there was an observable effect of a manualised Tier 1 intervention compared to ‘business-as-usual’ on early literacy skills for children with DLD. Participants were 140 children attending a specialised education program with equivalent oral language skills and alphabetic knowledge at baseline. After …
