Teachers’ Beliefs And Practices Regarding Assessment In English As A Foreign Language Classrooms In Vietnam, Xuan Van Ha, Nam Giang Tran, Ngoc Hai Tran

The Qualitative Report

Task-based language teaching (TBLT) has generated worldwide popularity as a curriculum innovation, and extensive research has investigated various aspects of the approach. However, little is known about the implementation of classroom assessment in TBLT curricula. This study investigated high school English as a foreign language teachers’ beliefs and practices regarding assessment in a curriculum innovation context in Vietnam. Data comprised in-depth interviews with six teachers, as well as testing documents. The findings revealed a strong impact of the high-stakes exams on teachers’ testing beliefs in that they focused explicitly on linguistic items in the assessed content and forms of assessment. …

The Virtualization Of Schooling During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Jared Brown, Kaila Folk, Jenna Swerdlow Nov 2021

The Virtualization Of Schooling During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Jared Brown, Kaila Folk, Jenna Swerdlow

Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association

Schooling is driven by economic, political, societal, and cynical inclinations. Education has no rest, and it is continuous, even outside of the classroom. One thing that interconnects these terms together is a narrative. The narrative gives meaning to the world and exerts an end goal of success and happiness. Yet, the only way to reach this shared goal is through intrapersonal and interpersonal relationships. Undoubtedly, the technological landscape in the 21st century is robust and evolving. When a natural force beyond human control corrupts every aspect of society, such as a pandemic, these technologies are relied upon for human interaction. …

A Mixed-Methods Case Study On Debt Mitigation And Students’ Institutional Perceptions, Dawn S. Medley Nov 2021

A Mixed-Methods Case Study On Debt Mitigation And Students’ Institutional Perceptions, Dawn S. Medley

Dissertations

The purpose of this mixed-methods study was to examine the role of a debt mitigation program as an incentive for adult student reengagement and to ascertain students’ perceptions of the institution after reenrolling in college via the program. The debt mitigation program was the first in the nation to forgive past-due student institutional debt, allowing students to return to the classroom (Pavlik, 2021). More overt student connection supports were designed to engage adult returners in addition to the debt forgiveness component (Itzkowitz, 2018). By dismissing student debt, designing outreach, and creating specific supports, the program was designed to demonstrate institutional …

Gamifying The Crew: Effects Of Collaborative Responsive Writing Using Gamification, In Interactive Web-Based E-Books, On L2 International Students’ Motivation And Academic Vocabulary Achievement, Rabea M. Alfahad

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

International students usually find it challenging to adapt to English academic vocabulary (Park, 2019). The literature is interspersed with the use of a variety of technologies and technological tools to augment the knowledge of language learners regarding English academic vocabulary (Flemban, 2018). However, in this dissertation, interactive web-based e-books and two strategies to teach English academic vocabulary (gamification and collaborative responsive writing) is employed. Gamification is applying game mechanics in non-game related contexts (Groh, 2012). This study investigated the impact of these two strategies on the participants’ academic vocabulary achievement and motivation level. In so doing, interactive web-based e-books are …

Spin Coupling In Magnetic Core - Shell Nanoparticles, Corisa Kons Nov 2021

Spin Coupling In Magnetic Core - Shell Nanoparticles, Corisa Kons

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Magnetic nanoparticles (NPs) have garnered much interest due to the unique properties that emergewhen compared to their bulk counterparts. In particular, core-shell (CS) NPs offer the ability to tailor the magnetic properties of the system through careful selection of core and shell constituent materials. In this work, the magnetic ordering of CS NPs with contrast in core/shell features (moment, anisotropy, coercivity, etc.) have been investigated using a combination of X-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy (XMCD) and polarized small angle neutron scattering (SANS). First, temperature-dependent analyses of XMCD and SANS studies were carried out for CS NPs featuring a core composed …

Undergraduate students and alumni who are or once were members of the SAA participated in focus groups and interviews to evaluate their involvement in the program. Questions addressed benefits of being involved in SAA, why students do not participate in SAA, and factors that contribute to students’ involvement or lack of participation in SAA. …

Preservice Elementary Teachers’ Beliefs About The Role Of Definition In The Learning Of Mathematics, Dana C. Cox, Suzanne Harper, Jane M. Keiser Nov 2021

Preservice Elementary Teachers’ Beliefs About The Role Of Definition In The Learning Of Mathematics, Dana C. Cox, Suzanne Harper, Jane M. Keiser

Journal of Educational Research and Innovation

Answering a call to emphasize the act of defining over the learning of definitions, we have shifted the content of a geometry course for preservice elementary teachers (PSETs) away from comparing and applying pre-written classification structures to classroom episodes centered on authoring definitions for special quadrilaterals. PSETs complete activities using geometry software, and collaboratively create definitions for specific quadrilaterals. In order to fully understand the potential of this curricular shift, we asked preservice elementary mathematics teachers’ to share their perceptions of the process of writing mathematical definitions. Data from participant reflections were analyzed for themes related to mathematical definition and …

Revenue Classification Shifting: Does Ceo Gender Matter?, Wenjing Ouyang Nov 2021

Revenue Classification Shifting: Does Ceo Gender Matter?, Wenjing Ouyang

Faculty Showcase

Instead of managing bottom-line earnings, firms may use revenue classification shifting to inflate core earnings due to its less risky, less costly, but viable features. Using a sample of 36,427 US firm-year observations from 1993-2019, we show that female CEO-led earnings management suspect firms, i.e., those that just beat important earnings threshold, engage in less revenue classification shifting than those with male CEOs in the pre-SOX period, but increase revenue classification shifting after SOX. Further analyses indicate that these firms substitute revenue classification shifting for real earnings management under a stricter monitoring environment after SOX. The results are robust to …

Inviting Faculty To Assess Undergraduate Student Learning Of The Core Competencies With Canvas Outcomes And Rubrics, Jessica Grady Nov 2021

Inviting Faculty To Assess Undergraduate Student Learning Of The Core Competencies With Canvas Outcomes And Rubrics, Jessica Grady

Faculty Showcase

This project set up the infrastructure to pilot the use of Canvas to gather course-level data on student performance on University-wide Learning Outcomes (ULOs). Faculty were recruited to score student work using established rubrics that they embedded into their Canvas courses. The goal was to lay the groundwork for a decentralized model of assessing ULOs that can produce core competency results at the program level (versus a centralized university level) that faculty are more likely to use to inform their teaching and improve student learning.
