JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Dec. 2, 2021) – Cadets in the Army ROTC Program at East Tennessee State University will be commissioned as second lieutenants at a 10 a.m. ceremony at the Carnegie Hotel on Friday, Dec. 10.

Col. Brent A. Clemmer, a recipient of the prestigious Silver Star, will be the guest speaker. Clemmer, who has served throughout the world from Korea to Afghanistan, is a graduate of the Naval Postgraduate School with a master’s degree in defense analysis. He is a recipient of the Purple Heart.

The spread of COVID-19 has impacted how students learn. Traditionally, information is delivered face-to-face. In-person learning provides students the ability to engage, participate, and encourages one-on-one student-teacher interaction. Distanced learning has caused students to transition online due to the unprecedented spread of COVID-19. Classes are conducted via zoom, where students can join a class through a zoom meeting ID and password. Dangerous Associations: Racializing Urban Communities And The Influence Of One Critical Service-Learning Course To Disrupt Racist Ideological Habits, T.J. Stockton

This study examined pre-service teachers’ initial perceptions of urban communities and schools. Furthermore, it explored whether engaging in critical service-learning coursework incorporating an anti-racist curriculum disrupted the mechanisms that perpetuate racist ideological habits and associations. The narrative analysis deconstructed 12 participants’ reflective essays using a critical race theoretical lens. The overall findings revealed that the participants experience urban communities through racist associations and ideologies promoting white supremacist thinking. The critical service-learning course did influence the perceptions of the participants. However, findings suggest that a single critical service-learning course is insufficient to prepare pre-service teachers with the anti-racist pedagogies necessary for …

Despite attempts to diversify the informal science education workforce, institutions like museums, zoos, and aquariums continue to be places of privilege where few can afford to make education a life-long career. This exploratory study examined informal science educators’ perspectives on workforce equity, diversity, and professionalization. Through a nationwide survey and selective interviews, educators (n = 132) were asked about their career motivations and personal and professional challenges faced before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Results show that 59% of informal science educators surveyed were considering academic or career changes, citing workplace practices and cultures that perpetuate overwork and underpay …

The Interdependent Roles Of The Psychosocial Predictors Of Human Papillomavirus Vaccination Among Christian Parents Of Unvaccinated Adolescents, Ayokunle Olagoke, Rachel Caskey, Brenikki Floyd, Jennifer Herbert-Beirne, Andrew D. Boyd, Yamilé Molina

Despite the availability of the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, uptake has been sub-optimal among certain religious groups. Psychosocial factors (threat appraisal, coping appraisal, and attitudes) have been identified as independent determinants of HPV vaccination. However, their interdependent effects have not been tested. We examined the interdependency of these psychosocial factors in predicting HPV vaccination intention among Christian parents of unvaccinated adolescents (using a theory-driven conceptual model). A cross-sectional study of 342 participants showed that perceived self-efficacy (β = 0.2, 0.11–0.29, p = <0.0001) and perceived response efficacy of HPV vaccine (β = 0.65, 0.53–0.77. p < .0001) were positively associated with vaccination intention. Our mediation analysis (using the Preachers and Hayes’ approach) shows that attitudes toward HPV vaccination mediated 59% of the relationship between perceived self-efficacy to vaccinate child and HPV …

In January 2020, the Outreach and Engagement Team at the College of the Holy Cross began preparing a poetry walk, which was reconfigured to a social media “poetry event” due to COVID-19. Group Counseling Courses In Cacrep-Accredited Programs: A National Survey, Yiying Xiong, Huan-Tang Lu

We surveyed 113 counselor educators to understand the structure of group counseling courses in CACREP-accredited programs and their self-reflections of teaching group counseling courses. Our focus included instructor characteristics, course content (didactic versus experiential), evaluation (content knowledge versus hands-on skills), supervision, and teaching strategies. The responses were a heterogeneous composition of instructor background, program structure, curriculum, and the setup of the experiential component. The comparison with the literature indicates a slight change, mainly in the use of technology and the experiential component, over the past decade. Counselor Trainees’ Personal Growth Through Interpersonal Experiential Growth Groups: An Instrumental Case Study, Yanhong Liu, Peitao Zhu, Alonzo D. Turner

Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision

Following the instrumental case study design, we explored 14 counselors-in-training’s (CITs) personal growth within their semester-long experiential growth groups (EGGs). The study illuminated CITs’ multifaceted growth within three categories of intrapersonal growth, interpersonal growth, and group cohesiveness. Participants’ intrapersonal and interpersonal growth were closely intertwined and mutually activating. Participants’ self-reflection, emotional awareness, self-other reflexivity, and their interpersonal communication and attitudes were found to encompass a continuum of activities ranging from being broad/generic to specific/action-oriented. Findings provided insights for group training and future research.

This article represents a call to action for counselor educators to examine their practices and policies for recruiting and retaining BIPOC school counselors in doctoral programs and the field of counselor education.

In this article, the authors make the case for re-engaging students in learning during the 2021-2022 school year by prioritizing social emotional learning and whole child principles, along with student voice and discourse. The Essential Instructional Practices for Disciplinary Literacy in the Secondary Classroom: Grades 6 to 12 are one tool to define instructional practices that align to these efforts.
