Piloting A Theoretical Framework For Understanding Teacher Resilience In Hard-To-Staff Schools, Traci Durant

The study examined the nature of hard-to-staff schools in relation to teacher resilience. The study proposes a theoretical framework that blends theories of self and collective efficacy, critical race, and resilience theories with Bronfrenbrenner’s ecological systems theory to examine personal and organizational factors that contribute to or weaken the resilience of teachers in challenging urban schools.

Two research questions guided the study: What are the personal factors that strengthen resilience in teachers in hard-to-staff schools? And, What organizational factors impact teacher resilience in hard-to-staff schools?

The decline of intraracial dating has been more pronounced among African Americans in comparison to other racial groups. There is lack of available research tailored towards Black men’s dating experiences. The purpose of this study was to explore the lived experiences of heterosexual African American males related to their disengagement in romantic relationships with African American females.

Problem: In one perinatal microsystem, an assessment revealed 49 reported events that alleged perceived bias occurred over a one-year period. This project aims to address implicit bias and educational solutions to improve communication and create a culture of humility and equity.

Context: The setting was an urban hospital within a large non-profit healthcare organization. The improvement team included registered nurse champions, obstetrical technicians, midwives, physicians, managers, and an educator.

The focus of this study was to develop standards that can be used for establishing and assessing high-quality postsecondary trade and industrial programs. A four-round Delphi technique was used to generate consensus regarding program standards. The panel of experts, comprised of postsecondary administrators of trade and industrial programs, was used to determine which program standards should guide the development and assessment of high-quality trade and industrial education programs. In this study, we compared the perspectives of students’ 21st-Century competencies (critical thinking and communication, applied learning, and intrapersonal and interpersonal skills) based on participating in an urban magnet information technology (IT) career academy compared to a traditional, comprehensive high school. We utilized propensity score matching to match academy and comprehensive high school learners on various demographic variables. The propensity score matching resulted in 299 matched pairs (n = 598). Using the matched groups, we ran linear regression models to investigate the relationship between school participation and students’ perceptions of their 21^st-Century skill attainment. Community colleges are the leaders in facilitating career and technical education (CTE), and faculty help develop program offerings on campus. This study explored faculty perceptions of community college CTE programs using the survey research method. Participants included 36 faculty members from various disciplines from 15 state colleges in Florida. Participants were sent a digital survey and asked to use a scale from 0 (do not agree) to 8 (agree) to score their agreement level with 43 statements of opinion. This study explored the process followed by a small manufacturing company in a rural area to implement a planned training program to develop the technical skills of its engineering/production workers as the company expands its operation. A case study design was used. Data was collected over an eight-month period by the examination of documents, direct observation, and interview. Abstract

Problem: Rapid and accurate interpretation of an EKG rhythm is an advanced-level competency required for all acute care nurses working in a cardiac monitored/telemetry unit. Observational data collected over a 4-month period by the facility clinical nurse educators identified that less than half of the nurses required to take the EKG exam passed on the first attempt.

Context: The education department at the facility onboards approximately 550-600 nurses annually for the 241-bed community hospital in the San Francisco Bay Area of Northern California, part of a larger healthcare organization.

Current research into motivation in second language acquisition, including Dörnyei (2005, 2009, 2015), offers compelling evidence that adult language learners who develop and habitually strengthen a vision of their future, linguistically capable selves using concrete, sensory imagery are more likely to sustain the necessary motivation to achieve their personal language-learning goals. My thesis proposes that poetry writing can be an effective medium for language learners to build facility in developing concrete, sensory imagery (tactile, visual, kinesthetic, olfactory, and auditory), including creating a motivating vision of their future, linguistically capable selves. 本研究开发了一项英语学术词汇测验 (the Test of Academic Vocabulary in English, TAVE)，并报告了TAVE的设计和验证过程。该测验旨在衡量学生对学术词汇的掌握情况，不同年级题本之间进行了垂直等值，而且评定结果可以统一到同一个发展性的量尺 (a developmental scale) 之上。此外，测验分数可以向一个有意义的语料库 (a meaningful corpus) 中推广。本研究以先前的试点工作为基础，所用样本包含2,238名来自西南某大城市的3到8年级学生，当中既有英语学习者 (English learner, EL)，也有非英语学习者，并阐述了语料库与测验的开发思路及过程。结果表明，TAVE测验呈现单维结构且具有很高的信度和关联效度，测验也能很好地区分低年级之间学生的词汇掌握能力。本文研究意义在于提出了一种发展性的度量方法 (a developmental metric)，使得学生的测验分数可以推广到一个有意义的语料库中——该语料库涵盖了学术文本中的常见词汇，而且能获得学生对语料库各单词的掌握概率。本文实践意义在于提供了一个不同年级分数可比的测验工具，并能用它来追踪学生短期或长期上词汇量的变动。

This study reports on the design and validation of a vertically equated assessment of academic vocabulary that generalizes to a meaningful corpus of words and is measured on a developmental scale: the Test of Academic Vocabulary in English (TAVE). Using Macao-PISA 2012 data collected from socio-economically disadvantaged and advantaged students, this study identified two sets of important learning factors that distinguished between low- and high-performing disadvantaged students, and between low- and high-performing advantaged students, respectively. The findings of this research contribute to a better understanding of the reasons for Macao’s high-quality and equitable education as compared to other regions with high mathematical literacy performance while also revealing the crux of small inequities in its education system. However, it remains unknown whether the PD programs are appropriately designed regarding selecting topics and presenters. A total of 432 presentations of this study were retrieved from six Chinese and American organizations during the pandemic from May 1, 2020, to April 30, 2021.
