A Phenomenological Investigation Of Nurse Faculty Commitment, Timothy A. Yett Mar 2022

A Phenomenological Investigation Of Nurse Faculty Commitment, Timothy A. Yett

Doctor of Education (EdD)

Given the lack of research on nurse faculty career commitment, this phenomenological research study aimed to investigate why nurse faculty choose to stay committed to their career when incentives to leave are high during a persistent nurse faculty shortage. This study used phenomenological reduction through the lens of the Three-Component Model (Allen & Meyers, 1990) of commitment to explore the lived experiences of nurse faculty working full-time in the Pacific Northwest. Through the lens of the Three-Component Model, three themes emerged: (a) nursing education as “a calling”; (b) mentoring as a framework for developing and retaining nurse faculty (c) nurse …

Essential Programs And Services (Eps) Component Review: Small And Geographically Isolated School Adjustment, Lisa A. Morris, Amy F. Johnson Mar 2022

Essential Programs And Services (Eps) Component Review: Small And Geographically Isolated School Adjustment, Lisa A. Morris, Amy F. Johnson

School Funding - Essential Programs and Services (EPS)

Background

The Essential Programs and Services (EPS) cost model provides an additional allocation to schools that are identified as small and geographically isolated. Such schools have less opportunity to achieve economies of scale by combining with nearby communities and may also have other additional costs inherent to geographic isolation. The form of the adjustment is a reduced student-to-teacher ratio for schools in lower size categories that meet the geographic isolation criteria, along with an additional per-pupil allocation amount for operation and maintenance of physical plant in island schools. Prior analyses of this adjustment were conducted in 2005, 2006, 2010 and …

Does The Dna Of Business Schools Need To Change?, Arnoud Cyriel Leo De Meyer Mar 2022

Does The Dna Of Business Schools Need To Change?, Arnoud Cyriel Leo De Meyer

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The causes, effects and consequences concern corporate governance and organisational management as much as political conflict, environmental sustainability and foreign diplomacy. In Business Schools on an Innovation Mission, a report released by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business in May 2010, management and leadership were clearly positioned, side-by-side with science and technology, as vital components to the innovation value chain. The business world exists as an eco-system of business, government, NGOs and non-profits, each interlocking. To be truly a "School for Business" it is also important to build strong relationships and strategic partnerships with the business world. In …

Gatekeepers, Guides And Ghosts: Intermediaries Impacting Access To Schools During Covid-19, Michelle Striepe, Christine Cunningham

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

This article reflects on the effect of gatekeepers, guides and ghosts on gaining access to research participants and field sites. Using a critically reflective approach, we examine our role as researchers and the roles of intermediaries in the process to access schools during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our findings show how gaining access is a non-linear process that is influenced by the agency of researchers and intermediaries at different contextual levels. Our analysis probes past research on gatekeepers, develops the emerging research on the role of guides and advances current understandings by introducing the concept of ghosts. Given the lack of …

Teachers in regional and remote schools may have even more limited access to the expertise required to support changes in practice than their peers in metropolitan centers. This article reports on a continuing professional learning program designed to support teachers in two regional schools to implement a new approach to teaching reading in their schools. The findings from this research suggest that existing online learning platforms can be used to deliver targeted instructional coaching for teachers …

Formal Mentoring Programs: An Exploration Of Barriers To Implementation In Nursing Schools, Megan Christine Duncan Mar 2022

Formal Mentoring Programs: An Exploration Of Barriers To Implementation In Nursing Schools, Megan Christine Duncan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Abstract Although there are over three million registered nurses in the United States, the national nursing shortage has reached epic proportions, with a vacancy rate of 9.9%. One of the contributing factors to the nursing shortage is the lack of qualified nursing faculty. While formal mentoring programs have been identified as best practice in supporting the expert nurse clinician in their transition into the novice nurse faculty role, these programs are not consistently implemented in schools of nursing. In this phenomenological study, the perceptions of nursing leaders regarding barriers to the implementation of formal mentoring programs were analyzed. Using a …

The Underrepresentation Of Women In Building Trades Programs And Careers: Perceptions Behind The Educational And Career Decision-Making Process, Ethel J. Clayton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Abstract

Women may perceive barriers when considering educational and career options in predominately male-dominated STEM-focused (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) programs and settings. This qualitative, phenomenological study, emphasizing the social cognitive career theory, explored women’s perceptions that influenced the decision-making process to pursue nontraditional educational paths and careers in career and technical education fields such as architecture and construction while considering gender-associated challenges, culture and racial-ethnicity, and career and technical education stigma. Six adult female participants (three students and three leaders) responded to semistructured questions within a focus group and one-on-one interviews via telephone conferencing. A thematic analysis process using …

Impact Of Gamification On An Online Middle School Classroom, Jeremy R. Hein Mar 2022

Impact Of Gamification On An Online Middle School Classroom, Jeremy R. Hein

Masters Theses

Gamification is defined as the use of game elements in non-game contexts. The gamified element explored in this thesis is a leaderboard with various forms of engagement being tabulated. This study investigates the impact a leaderboard has on the behavioral engagement of an online middle school classroom. Research has revealed that elements of gamification can increase engagement but there is a gap in research that focuses solely on a leaderboard as an intervention to increase engagement. Also missing from the literature were studies conducted in middle school settings. The study presented in this thesis addresses these limitations and provides value …

Professional Development For Educational Continuity In Emergencies: The Response Of Two Urban School Districts During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Crystal Amado Kucharski, Justin Arnone, Samantha Butler, Shannon Makowski, Lucas Preble

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

The COVID-19 pandemic is a worldwide disruptor that impacts the foundation of education as professionals know it. The structural soundness and stability of the nation’s public education system was on display, exposing the varying antiquated practices in place and the inability of many school districts to pivot to a digital platform as the nation’s public schools closed their school buildings to K-12 students. Public K-12 schools did not have readily available systems nor protocols in place to continue educating the nation’s kids. Parents, grandparents, older siblings, etc, became the teachers of these children as the teachers attempted to educate via …

Facilitating Accommodation Of Learners With Disabilities In Summative Assessment Of Literacies In Tanzania Through Mobile Application, Musa Saimon, Fredrick Mtenzi Mar 2022

Facilitating Accommodation Of Learners With Disabilities In Summative Assessment Of Literacies In Tanzania Through Mobile Application, Musa Saimon, Fredrick Mtenzi

Institute for Educational Development, East Africa

Summative Assessment of Language Literacies in Tanzania is administered in the form of a Paper-and-pencil assessment. This kind of assessment hardly accommodates learners with disabilities such as visually impaired ones because it does not allow adjustment of the font size to suit the reader’s needs. As a result, such students might end up being judged as failures in such assessments while their failure is attributed to the nature of the assessment rather than their lack of competence in language literacies. Therefore, to improve the existing situation, the present study investigated the contribution of mobile applications to accommodating learners with diverse …

Exploring Student Teacher's Lived Experiences With Supervisor Feedback, Kristin M. Rich Mar 2022

Exploring Student Teacher's Lived Experiences With Supervisor Feedback, Kristin M. Rich

Doctor of Education (EdD)

Despite receiving feedback from a university supervisor, student teachers often do not show responsiveness to that feedback. This phenomenological study examined the lived experiences of student teachers receiving feedback from their supervisors during a post-observation conference by using a framework of three conditions for learner improvement. The study aimed to enhance what student teachers valued, what they understood, and how they responded to their supervisors’ feedback. What they shared highlighted two significant factors influencing their responsiveness to feedback: (1) a knowledge of their learners and (2) a desire to be treated as professionals. These two factors determined whether they applied …

"Why Stay?" Experiences Of Persistence In Former Education Support Staff Who Become Second-Career Teachers, Christine Bullock

Doctor of Education (EdD)

Teacher attrition and shortages are a rapidly expanding issues across the U.S. that accelerated during the pandemic. Understanding why teachers persist in a profession where so many leave has become of paramount importance for educational stakeholders as they look to recruit, train, and retain new professionals. Second-career teachers now represent a growing percentage of these new educators; they enter a challenging field in the wake of so many departures. This hermeneutic phenomenological study explored the unique lived experiences of four current PreK-12 second-career educators who came to teaching from an education support staff role, and who have persisted in the …

Relationships Between Connectedness, Performance Proficiency, Satisfaction, And Online Learning Continuance, Hungwei Tseng, Yu Chen Kuo, Hsin Te Yeh, Yingqi Tang

Research, Publications & Creative Work

Maintaining momentum is vital in terms of how soon students can complete a program, especially for those who are in the early stage of taking online courses. This study attempted to extend the existing literature by examining the influence of online students’ perceived sense of connectedness, performance proficiency, and satisfaction on their intentions to continue an online learning course. A quantitative survey approach was adopted to test our hypothesized structural model. Three hundred and sixty-nine students who had taken fewer than three fully online courses participated in this study. The results revealed that three out of four testing hypotheses were …
