Saving The Campus Farm: One Approach To Leveraging Institutional Support For A Campus Farm Space, Julia L. Angstmann

The number of university and college campus farms have increased 13-fold since 1992 to over 300 campuses (LaCharite, 2016). According to reporting by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) (2018), 80% of campus farm spaces are less than 5 acres in size and 86% are located on campuses with no agriculture school (AASHE, 2018). Campus farms provide a rich interdisciplinary social context of community based, sustainable agriculture that spans the entire suite of social and physical sciences as well as non-STEM fields such as business, religious studies, and communication. JOHNSON CITY (Jan. 13, 2022) – East Tennessee State University and Ballad Health announced that Dr. Kathryn Wilhoit has been named the inaugural director of the Appalachian Highlands Center for Nursing Advancement. She began her new role on Jan. 1, 2022.

Wilhoit brings more than 40 years of experience in clinical and research-based nursing, administration and leadership experience to this role. Most recently, she served as interim dean of the ETSU College of Nursing from January through August 2021, and then as special assistant to the dean of Nursing from August  through December 2021.

Replication Or Reinvention: Educators’ Narratives On Teaching In Higher Education During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Viola Manokore, Jeff Kuntz

Objectives: The purpose of the study was to examine narratives about the effect of the sudden transition from face-to-face teaching to emergency remote teaching necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic on post-secondary educators.

Method: We conducted interviews with 11 post-secondary educators from five post-secondary institutes in one province in Canada. Educators were asked to reflect on their experiences during the transition from in-person to remote teaching and learning.

Results: Our thematic analysis revealed that educators’ experiences were influenced by three main factors: (a) student engagement, interactions, and persistence in learning; (b) competence in the application of teacher technological pedagogical content knowledge …

Undergraduate educators and students must navigate lingering aftereffects of the COVID pandemic on education in the 2021–2022 academic year even as COVID continues to impact delivery of undergraduate science education. This article describes ongoing difficulties for undergraduate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) students and educators and suggests strategies and easy-to-use resources that may help educators navigate the “COVID hangover” and ongoing COVID-related disruptions.

The Cost Of Success For Black, Racialized Minority, And Indigenous Academic Leaders, Helen Ezenwa

Black, racialized minorities and Indigenous leaders (“BrmI”, Henry et al., 2017) in higher education are part of an elite group of educators. Less than 5% of full professors are Black and Hispanic (Taylor et al., 2020), and it is typically from this pool that academic leaders (e.g., Provost, Department Chair) are selected. Given this finite population, this research aims to understand one potential reason for lack of ascension into positions of power for academic leaders of color: the cost of that success. JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Jan. 12, 2022) – Born in Bristol, Tennessee, just after World War I ended, Ernest Jennings Ford – known best as Tennessee Ernie Ford – reached tremendous levels of fame.

A radio and television host and singer who crossed many genres, Ford became especially well known for his 1955 recording of “Sixteen Tons,” one of the biggest country and pop hits of the 1950s.

Asian American and immigrant Asian women are working within higher education, but few hold upper leadership positions within the community college sector. Limited research has been conducted regarding Asian American and immigrant Asian women in these leadership positions. The purpose of this qualitative, heuristic, phenomenological study was to understand the lived experiences of Asian American and immigrant Asian women in community college leadership. Specifically, this study sought to describe the lived intersectional experiences of race and gender, assignment of the model minority myth, and experiences with racialized discourses. Students have had difficulties with mathematical word problems since they were introduced in their early elementary grades. Elementary teachers have dealt with student difficulties in solving mathematical word problems. In addition, elementary teachers are always implementing and searching for research-based strategies to remediate the deficits in solving mathematical word problems. Evidence-based studies on the benefits of integrating STEM into the arts are limited; however, some suggest that it can lead to improved scientific literacy and new approaches for artistic scholarship. Unfortunately, undergraduate education often creates disciplinary silos where the two are not integrated. Here, we discuss a unique collaboration between professors in the art and biology departments. Our goal was to integrate science into art courses using an agar art activity. We hypothesized that art students could effectively learn microbiology laboratory techniques and use them as novel tools for artistic practice. Increased international students could potentially contribute to the institutional financial stability. However, there is limited research evidence regarding the association between net tuition revenue and international undergraduate student enrollment at public doctoral universities through a longitudinal perspective. This research, therefore, fills the gap and investigates the association between international student enrollment and the financial status of institutions. Informed by Cost-Benefit Analysis (CBA), this study used correlational analysis, One-way ANOVA and Post Hoc tests to examine the relationship from different perspectives. This article explores the educational processes of the high-school youth and higher education youth of parents who were imprisoned following the coup attempt in Turkey in July 2016. Data was collected from parents who are involved in their\ children's education and who have been subjected to political persecution. The research is focused on educational processes with respect to students' academic success, psychological problems, and changes to moral and universal values, all from the point of view of the parents. Acculturation And Social Media: How Do International Students Engage With Facebook While Abroad?, Kikuko Omori, Michael W. Schwartz

This study investigates the relationship between Facebook use and acculturation using Berry’s acculturation orientations and Communication Accommodation Theory (CAT) as theoretical frameworks. The researchers followed 15 international students’ Facebook walls during their first and second semester in the U.S. by creating a fake Facebook page to be added as the international students’ social network. The major findings of this study include a) the pattern of Facebook postings was the same during the semester, b) international students used convergence communication strategies to better communicate with people in their network, and c) some participants’ Facebook postings indicate a strong identification with their …
