Teachers’ Stories Of Autonomy, Competence, And Relatedness In Becoming An Innovative Teacher Facilitator With Ubiquitous Computing, Beth R. Sockman, Doreen Lwanga

Excelsior: Leadership in Teaching and Learning

Many classrooms have access to ubiquitous information communications technology (ICT), and teachers have been trained on the way to use it. However, few teachers use technology in what many consider the most powerful ways to learn. This study investigates four teachers who have developed from traditional teaching into facilitative–innovative teaching with ubiquitous ICT. As an instrumental case study, we used self-determination theory’s interaction of autonomy, competence, and relatedness to analyze their stories to understand better why and how they developed. Participants taught in middle and high schools representing a range of school sizes and sociocultural populations. Findings reveal that all …

Using Multimodal Virtual Instruction To Build Preservice Teachers' Knowledge Of Dyslexia, Susan J. Chambre, Molly K. Ness

Excelsior: Leadership in Teaching and Learning

Increasing awareness about screening and instructional interventions for students with dyslexia is a necessary component of P-12 teacher preparation. Disparities in reading achievement for students with disabilities, including those with dyslexia, is evidenced in lower literacy testing scores as well as lower high school graduation rates for those with documented disabilities when compared to typical developing peers. Preservice teachers, however, continue to struggle with understanding, identifying, and providing targeted literacy instruction to remediate reading challenges for students with dyslexia. Emerging data on the impact of the COVID-19 school closures on lags in student’s reading attainment, further solidifies the need for …

Distribution Of Instructional Leadership Roles Within A School Organization, Zora Wolfe, Kim-Kathie Knudsen, Abbie Mahaffey

Excelsior: Leadership in Teaching and Learning

Educational leaders are tasked with many managerial responsibilities as well as instructional leadership roles. However, effective instructional leadership is a critical factor in improving student achievement. The purpose of this study was to explore how instructional leadership is distributed within a school organization, specifically examining the perceptions of district, building, and teacher leaders in relation to their roles in instructional leadership and the barriers to effective instructional leadership. Qualitative interviews were conducted with district office leaders, building leaders, and instructional coaches, and their responses to the questions were reviewed, categorized, and coded using Crewell’s Data Analysis Spiral (2011).

Committing To Anti-Bias Anti-Racist Teaching: From Activity To Habits Of Mind, Tierney B. Hinman, Elizabeth Y. Stevens, Tess M. Dussling, Nance S. Wilson, Amy Tondreau, Wendy Gardiner, Kristen White, Sophie Degener

Excelsior: Leadership in Teaching and Learning

With the need to prepare teacher candidates to work with an increasingly diverse student body in U.S. schools, a multi-institutional collaborative self-study group was formed to examine ways in which teacher educators could expand beyond practice-based literacy preparation to support candidates’ understanding and implementation of critical pedagogies. The self-study served as a catalyst for interrogating the identities the teacher educators brought to their practice and began a journey that transformed a focus on critical literacies into a commitment to action for change through anti-bias anti-racist work. This paper draws from group dialogue and reflective journals to examine specific practices implemented …

A Phenomenological Study Of The Lived Experiences Of Former Foster Students Learning Through Online Educational Environments, Tiffany Sue Beckwith Feb 2023

A Phenomenological Study Of The Lived Experiences Of Former Foster Students Learning Through Online Educational Environments, Tiffany Sue Beckwith

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to describe the experiences of former foster students in online educational environments. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs acted as the theory guiding this study, as it was essential when investigating how unmet needs for foster children affected their motivation to learn and feelings of belongingness with their school. This study was designed to answer the following central research question: What are the experiences of former foster students who have taken part in online education? Using a transcendental phenomenological approach, I collected the lived experiences of the participants to uncover emerging themes during online …

Team Promotion Focus And Subordinate Deviance: A Prediction Using Leader Humility, Follower Attachment Style, And Organization Centralization, Michael Wayne Huggins Feb 2023

Team Promotion Focus And Subordinate Deviance: A Prediction Using Leader Humility, Follower Attachment Style, And Organization Centralization, Michael Wayne Huggins

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this study is to assess how accurately leader humility, organizational centralization, and follower attachment styles (secure, anxious, avoidant) predict positive and negative team performance. Quantitative research on leader humility has only been in existence for 20 years. The research design is a non-experimental, quantitative, predictive correlational design to determine the relationship, strength, and direction of the relationship between the predictor variables and the criterion variables (team promotion focus and subordinate deviance). The sample includes 93 followers in a one-year old leader-follower dyad employed in the United States. A 9-item scale was used to measure leader humility, a …

The Difference In Geometry Achievement Between Students Who Utilize Lfm Strategies And Those Who Do Not: A Nonequivalent Control-Group Pretest/Posttest Study, Amanda Nicol Feb 2023

The Difference In Geometry Achievement Between Students Who Utilize Lfm Strategies And Those Who Do Not: A Nonequivalent Control-Group Pretest/Posttest Study, Amanda Nicol

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this quantitative, quasi-experimental nonequivalent control-group pretest/posttest study was to identify whether there is a difference in Geometry achievement between students who utilize Learning for Mastery (LFM) strategies compared to those who do not at the high school level. This study provided insight into instructional and assessment strategies that may increase student achievement, understanding, and retention. Seventy-three high school mathematics students enrolled in Geometry courses, grades nine through twelve, from a suburban high school in Northwestern New Jersey were assessed in this study. Students were given a pretest, participated in daily classwork and instructional strategies for ten weeks, …

The Impact Of Mental Health Diagnoses In Combination With Learning Disorders, Tanya S. Gulledge Feb 2023

The Impact Of Mental Health Diagnoses In Combination With Learning Disorders, Tanya S. Gulledge

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this research is to build on previous research that showed a significant relationship between students with socially devalued identities, poor mental health, and lower academic achievement and suggested tailored and targeted treatments as a possible protective factor. To develop programs to assist students in achieving higher scores, one must first determine the impact of comorbid mental health diagnosis and specific learning disorder on academic achievement. A quantitative causal-comparative study was used to determine if there is an impact of mental health diagnoses in combination with specific learning disorders for students with an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) or …

Effect Of Intense Social Media Use On Middle School At-Risk Students Test Scores In Science And Math: An Ordinal Logistic Regression Analysis, Terry M. Johnson Feb 2023

Effect Of Intense Social Media Use On Middle School At-Risk Students Test Scores In Science And Math: An Ordinal Logistic Regression Analysis, Terry M. Johnson

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to investigate the intensity of social networking use, gender, and socioeconomic status as possible predictors of eighth grade at-risk middle school students’ math and science test scores. Because this study hypothesized a general linear model between an ordinal response variable and more than one explanatory variables, ordinal logistic regression analysis was used. Social media is pervasive in the daily lives of students and so it can have a possible deleterious influence on student achievement. This idea continues to animate practitioners, researchers, parents, and all others interested in the achievement and success of …

Black Women’S Body Image, Breast Cancer, And Post Traumatic Growth, Harriette Richard, Antonia S. Mead

The Journal of the Research Association of Minority Professors

Black women’s body image is influenced by several factors but when women have breast cancer, a “new normal” extends from diagnosis to long after reconstruction. This pilot study examines Black women’s breast cancer experience beginning with social networks, diagnosis, health care, the medical community, and breast reconstruction, ending with PTSD and Post Traumatic Growth (PTG). A convenience sample was surveyed and a qualitative research methodology was utilized to analyze responses from Black female breast cancer survivors. Research questions included body image perceptions after surgery and post-reconstruction. The participants go through adversity, find strength, and grow, ready to face the next …
