How I Want Future Generations To Remember Covid-19, Anonymous Feb 2023

How I Want Future Generations To Remember Covid-19, Anonymous

Community Reflections

For the future generations, I want them to know that COVID-19 wasn’t just “two weeks off from school”, I want them to know and realize that life was troublesome for many people and families still haven’t recovered years later.

Covid- 19, Anonymous

Community Reflections

Many aspects of our daily lives were thrown into disarray because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Even until January 2023, no one knew what true, long-term consequences it would have. It would introduce new customs that many of us had never experienced before, like wearing masks, keeping six feet apart, and not shaking each other's hands to introduce ourselves. We have not seen such an outbreak since the 1980s with HIV and AIDS in the U.S., where there was so much paranoia within our society that we were constantly sanitizing our hands and quarantining when someone was infected with COVID-19.

My Covid Lesson, Anonymous

Community Reflections

What was supposed to be a two-week break turned into months of quarantining and not seeing any of my close friends. Covid-19 was hard on many people. During this time, I found who I am on my own.

My Account Of Covid- 19, Ryan Anonymous

Community Reflections

It was March 13, 2020, when the first encounter happened. The Coronavirus was still new to many of us, so we really did not know the true severity that this virus had in store. One morning, during second period, the entire school was called down to the auditorium for an impromptu assembly. With the recent closings of neighboring schools, we were certain that we were the next to close; everyone was ecstatic.

Covid 19 And Other Pandemics, Anonymous Feb 2023

Covid 19 And Other Pandemics, Anonymous

Community Reflections

The Coronavirus was a global pandemic that spread from China to the United States in March 2020. In March, it was announced to us that the United States had to go into lockdown for two weeks. Little did we know that this two-week lockdown was going to turn into almost a year. This news was found to be very surprising by everyone because it has been so many years since we had a pandemic that affected everyone.

Family Experience, Anonymous Feb 2023

Family Experience, Anonymous

Community Reflections

It started with whispers in the hallway. Hearing rumors from peers that we would have two weeks off from school and then return to share stories from those glorious 14 days. In hindsight, it was naïve to think that Covid-19 would have such little impact on my life, but it eventually struck my family as it did thousands of others.

The Four-Day School Week As A Path For Principal Attraction And Retention: Perceptions Of Elementary Principals In Missouri, Laura E. Weber Feb 2023

The Four-Day School Week As A Path For Principal Attraction And Retention: Perceptions Of Elementary Principals In Missouri, Laura E. Weber

Student Theses and Dissertations

This study was conducted to determine whether a significant difference existed between principals working in public elementary schools in Missouri using a traditional, five-day schedule and principals working in public elementary schools in Missouri that use an alternative, four-day schedule when comparing their perceptions of work-life balance, time for self-care, work-related stress, self-efficacy, and overall job satisfaction. An electronic survey was sent to public elementary schools in Missouri utilizing both four-day and five-day calendars. The survey instrument included questions in the areas of work-life balance, time for self-care, work-related stress, self-efficacy, and overall job satisfaction as well as demographic information. …

Assessing Generalization Within The Barton Reading And Spelling System, Abby Antici

Student Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to determine whether children utilizing the Barton Reading and Spelling System within literacy intervention programs generalize the learned rules to low-frequency words found within the curriculum and novel words outside of the program curriculum. The participants included seven students enrolled in the Literacy Intervention Program at the Arkansas State University Speech and Hearing Center during the spring and summer 2022 semesters. The Test of Written Spelling, 5th Edition (TWS- 5) was given as a pre-test and post-test. Tennessee Rural Middle School Teachers' Perceptions Of Academic Goal Setting For Students, Amy Woolum Feb 2023

Tennessee Rural Middle School Teachers' Perceptions Of Academic Goal Setting For Students, Amy Woolum

Ed.D. Dissertations

Since the 1960s, business leaders and educators used the idea of goal setting theory as a guide to success. Teachers who implemented goal setting strategies contributed to student success and achievement. During my study, I found little existing literature focused on academic goal setting implementation for students in Tennessee rural middle schools containing grades six through eight. The purpose of this qualitative interpretive study was to investigate Tennessee rural middle school teachers’ perceptions about implementing academic goal setting for students. I sent an online Google Forms questionnaire to 117 certified and licensed teachers in varying Tennessee rural middle schools. After …

Measurement And Scale Development Skills For Public Health Doctoral Scholars, Manoj Sharma

UNLV Best Teaching Practices Expo

Web-based synchronous teaching is gaining popularity all over the world. In web-based synchronous teaching, both pedagogical robustness and the building of content expertise are mandatory. I taught a new doctoral course, HED 763 Measurement and Scale Development in Social and Behavioral Health in the Spring of 2022. The specific teaching techniques that I used were (a) enhanced pedagogical features that included delivery as web-based synchronous, organizing the course in Canvas and making it available from day 1, recording all lectures beforehand in Panopto, utilizing case studies, employing WebEx and its breakout sessions feature, guest lectures, and having weekly skill-building activities …

Increasing Student Engagement: Case-Based Teaching And Learning, Necole Leland, Lisa Nicholas Feb 2023

Increasing Student Engagement: Case-Based Teaching And Learning, Necole Leland, Lisa Nicholas

UNLV Best Teaching Practices Expo

Case-based learning (CBL) is an active learning approach using hypothetical or real life problems that help learners develop clinical judgment and problem-solving skills (Bastable, 2023). CBL can be used in multiple settings, including the classroom, the clinical environment, and simulation. CBL can be used in most disciplines to bring real life scenarios to life for learners. Learners identify the problem in the case, develop multiple approaches to solving problems, discuss different viewpoints or assumptions, propose alternate decisions, and weigh consequences (Young & Paterson, 2007). CBL helps make connections that transfer theoretical knowledge to practical application (Billings & Halstead, 2020). CBL …

Education: School of Education Faculty Publications and Other Works

No matter what type of doctor you see, they usually collect similar information. Even before the doctor enters the room, someone will assess your blood pressure, weight, height, and temperature. These are markers related to your health. If your blood pressure or temperature is too high, or perhaps your weight has gone up or down drastically since your last visit, the doctor will know something in your treatment plan needs to be addressed. Like screening for these essential health markers, schools can also use data to see how the larger system is working. These screening tools also help teams determine …

The Impact Of Using Relevant Context On Student Comprehension And Attitude In A Collegiate Introductory Statistics Unit On Probability, Ryan F. Rzeszutko, Jennifer L. Petrie, Dwayne T. James Feb 2023

The Impact Of Using Relevant Context On Student Comprehension And Attitude In A Collegiate Introductory Statistics Unit On Probability, Ryan F. Rzeszutko, Jennifer L. Petrie, Dwayne T. James

Dissertations

The typical collegiate introductory statistics course poses significant challenges for students. Many do not fully comprehend key course skills, and it is common for students to exit the class with a neutral or negative attitude toward statistics. To measure the impact of using relevant contextual examples as an instructional strategy during a probability unit, in-class activities were designed to align with areas of interest for participants as identified by a student interest inventory. It was hypothesized that the use of relevant context would create a significant difference in the comprehension or attitude of students enrolled in an introductory statistics course …

Theater & Identity At Gettysburg College, Spring 1971, Jamie A. Riches Feb 2023

Theater & Identity At Gettysburg College, Spring 1971, Jamie A. Riches

CAFE Symposium 2023

In 1971, the country was still in the process of extreme social upheaval and transformation brought on by the 1960s, and that included small, secluded communities like Gettysburg College. In the Owl & Nightingale Society, the school's theater program, many students found ways to express and explore themselves creatively and personally. Both historically and currently, theater tends to draw in queer people, and can be a comfortable and interesting way to embrace your identity and learn to build and work with communities. These are things queer people often didn't--and still don't--have access to in their everyday lives, making theater a …

Community Reflections

March 2020 is a year that I will never forget. Covid-19 was becoming more known, but it did not affect my dance team trip. My team and I were in Orlando, Florida for NDA Dance Nationals. I felt so drained and feverish, a sickness I have never had before.
