Student Theses and Dissertations

This qualitative narrative research study aimed to address the problem of students’ low enrollment numbers in a historically low number of college-bound areas in South Texas. The theoretical frameworks utilized to explore this topic were self-efficacy and social capital. The proposed theories explored students’ level of self-efficacy, social capital networks, and teachers’ perceptions of creating and sustaining a college-going culture. The findings indicated a need for early college advisement and establishing college-going cultures in elementary and middle school, teacher professional development, college awareness and knowledge for parents, and college preparatory programs at the middle school level. Impacts Of The Covid-19 Pandemic On Kindergarten Student Behavior, Hannah L. Allen

Student Theses and Dissertations

The extreme mitigation measures of the COVID-19 pandemic had many negative impacts on children’s mental health and behavior. This study sought to examine the effects of COVID-19 mitigation strategies on kindergarten student misconduct post-COVID-19. For this study, kindergarten students’ office discipline referrals (ODRs) from one school district in the Bootheel region of southeast Missouri were compared to determine if differences existed among kindergarten student behaviors. Two groups were utilized in this study: Group A, consisting of pre-COVID-19 ODRs, and Group B, post-COVID-19 ODRs. This study found a statistically significant difference in the number of ODRs pre- and post-COVID-19. However, the …

High School Reimagined: Student, Teacher, Parent, Administrator Perceptions Of One High School’S Experience With The Covid-19 Global Pandemic, Lawrence J. Eberlin, Jr.

Student Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to describe student, parent, teacher, and administrator (stakeholder) experiences at one large, suburban high school in South Carolina during the COVID-19 global pandemic from March 2020 to June 2022. To inform the school and district leaders’ decision-making process, the researcher applied path-goal theory to frame the study. Based upon a phenomenological design, the researcher collected qualitative data through four separate stakeholder focus groups and stakeholders’ written responses to a follow-up question. Using three research questions which focused on the high school schedule, the delivery of instruction, and the high school’s responses to the pandemic, …

Institutional Responses To Chatgpt: Analysing The Academic Integrity Policies Of Four Public And Private Institutions Of Higher Education In Australia, Carmela De Maio

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

ChatGPT and other generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools have dis-rupted teaching and learning in higher educationand pose a potential threat to academic integrity. Although most tertiary institutions have in place policies on how to respond to breaches of academic integrity by students, these policies may not always be clear on how to best approach the potential impactsof GenAI to ensure academic integrity can be maintained. Consequently, this pa-per presents an analysis of the academic integritypolicies and procedures of four Australian public and private institutions of higher education where I teach. Adapting For Anti-Racism: Collaboratively Diversifying Faculty Open Professional Development, Stacy Katz, Sherry L. Deckman

Publications and Research

Higher education institutions have become increasingly interested in exploring the innovative learning opportunities afforded by open educational resources and practices (OER). These same institutions have begun to more seriously consider ways to eradicate racism. However, few institutions have considered the ways that OER may prove useful in dismantling anti-racism and how to prepare instructional faculty to do so. Given their expertise and research skills, librarians may be uniquely positioned to take on this role. In this paper, we explore one such online asynchronous effort–adaptation and implementation of the Open for Anti-Racism faculty workshop in Learning Management System – and offer …

Critical Race Theory Bans And The Changing Canon: Cultural Appropriation In Narrative, Susan Ayres Jan 2024

Critical Race Theory Bans And The Changing Canon: Cultural Appropriation In Narrative, Susan Ayres

William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice

Thirty-five states have enacted critical race theory (CRT) bans at the level of elementary and secondary public education, and eleven states have extended these to the university level. One way to resist these attempts to repress a healthy democracy by whitewashing history is through a pedagogy of anti-racism, including literary works. The question of what that would look like involves questions of cultural appropriation, which occurs when one takes from another culture, such as a writer creating a narrative about a character outside of the writer’s cultural identity. This Article considers the story of Ota Benga, brought from the Congo …

Understanding Dual Language Teachers' Language Ideologies Using Translanguaging Theory And Pedagogy: A Mixed-Methods Approach, Joseph P. Elliott

Dissertations

The purpose of this explanatory, mixed-methods research study was to understand dual language teachers’ language ideologies using a pluralist theory of bilingualism called translanguaging (García et al., 2017). Translanguaging is also a pedagogy that teachers can employ to help emergent bilingual students grow and learn. The research design employed two phases: Phase One used survey research and confirmatory factor analysis to analyze data from 110 dual language teachers across the United States regarding their translanguaging beliefs, attitudes, policies, and practices. Phase Two used one-on-one interview data from three dual language teachers who completed the Phase Two survey. Using these data, …

Construct Validation Of A Learning Resources Rubric [Lrr]: A Modified Delphi Study, Lei Wang

Dissertations - ALL

Abstract Central to the landscape of education is the understanding that instruction is fundamentally purposeful, aiming to facilitate effective learning. Grounded in this premise, instructional design emerges as a complex and multifaceted profession. In the digital era, Instructional Designers (IDs) harness technological advancements to shape robust learning resources. However, with a burgeoning array of resources, each varying in efficacy, arises the pressing need for designs firmly anchored in evidence-based learning principles. The challenges encountered by IDs, especially in crafting resources that accentuate deeper learning, cannot be overlooked. Existing rubrics, while extensive, often fall short in addressing the nuances imperative for …

Crack-Ers (Crack Riddles Applying Cybersecurity Knowledge - Escape Room Scenario), Benjamin Acuff

Posters-at-the-Capitol

CRACK-ERS (Crack Riddles Applying Cybersecurity Knowledge - Escape Room Scenario) is a unique, beginner's level CTF game with riddle-based challenges on various cybersecurity topics. The game is driven by an adventure story-based escape room format. Existing literature indicates that traditional CTFs pose challenges for beginners with no cybersecurity background. The novelty of CRACK-ERS lies in its non-traditional design as an unplugged CTF with an adventure scenario-driven script, encouraging participants to solve cybersecurity-related riddles. CRACK-ERS targets beginner-level learners, fostering teamwork, explorative research, cybersecurity problem-solving, and riddle-cracking skills. Prior cybersecurity educational research notes limited instances of escape room-style CTF games and fewer …
