Spanish As A Heritage Language Across Disciplines: Assessing Spanish And Bilingual Courses At An Hsi In South Texas, Katherine Christoffersen, Dania López García, Javier Cavazos

11th National Symposium on Spanish as a Heritage Language (Archived)

Long-standing research has confirmed the many benefits of Spanish as a heritage language in dual language in K-12 classrooms (Collier & Thomas, 2017, 2019). However, in higher education, there are very few exceptions to the English-only monolingual norm (García & Li, 2014). This study explores one exception, a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) in South Texas where certain classes are taught bilingually (Spanish/English) and in Spanish across various disciplines. In this study, we examine 1) how these courses impact success through a quantitative analysis of cumulative grade point averages (GPAs) and 2) how students perceive these courses through a qualitative analysis …

Nuestra Herencia Familiar—Honoring Spanish Heritage Language Students Through Family Engagement, Lucero Saldaña, Nelly Alvarez Feb 2024

Nuestra Herencia Familiar—Honoring Spanish Heritage Language Students Through Family Engagement, Lucero Saldaña, Nelly Alvarez

11th National Symposium on Spanish as a Heritage Language (Archived)

Family Engagement is the cornerstone to celebrating Spanish Heritage Language (SHL) scholars. Through engaging our families and communities, we gather testimonios that give us insight into their cultural traditions, experiences, and the importance of ensuring that their child(ren) become biliterate. This collaboration with our families and communities creates strong reciprocal partnerships where open continuous dialogue has become commonplace. Subsequently, we have been able to identify opportunities for change in our Family Engagement practices. In particular, we learned that we needed to implement innovative initiatives that would honor our SHL scholars, their families, and our school communities.

In our proposed presentation, …

No Soy Intrusa: Testimonios Of Latina Doctoral Students, Maryann Rocha

11th National Symposium on Spanish as a Heritage Language (Archived)

The number of Latinas who earn a doctoral degree has increased steadily in the United States, however, the numbers fail to describe the experiences of doctoral Latina students.

The qualitative pilot study was conceived from a graduate Mexican American Studies course project. The study collected testimonio of three Latina doctoral students enrolled in a counseling program at a public university in Texas. Platica was utilized in the research methodology and design, a mutualistic approach that honors the participants testimonio instead of the classic approach of extracting information from the participants.

Latino Critical Theory and Theory in the Flesh were used …

Fostering Latinx/E Students’ Familial Capital In The Spanish Heritage Language Program At The University Of Xxxx, Angelica Amezcua

11th National Symposium on Spanish as a Heritage Language (Archived)

In this presentation, I show how we (director and instructors) have fostered Latinx/e students’ familial capital in the Spanish Heritage Language Program at the University of XXX. Familial capital recognizes the nurtured relationship students have with their immediate and extended family members and communities. This capital also includes the lessons students learned on caring, coping, emotional, moral, and educational consciousness from their family members. Additionally, this capital pulls from the research of Vélez-Ibáñez and Greenberg (1992) on Funds of Knowledge that points out that Mexican-Americans learn valuable lessons from their family and community that have been passed down …

Dissertations

Our co-authored research ‘Steminism: Analyzing Factors That Improve Retention for Women as STEM Majors’ analyzed factors that contributed to the retention of women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) programs at Missouri University of Science & Technology (Missouri S&T). Self-Compassion And Body Image Inflexibility As Mediators Of Outcomes In A Residential Eating Disorder Sample, Julie M. Petersen, Jennifer L. Barney, Leila K. Capel, Mercedes G. Woolley, Tera Lensegrav-Benson, Benita Quakenbush-Roberts, Michael P. Twohig

Psychology Faculty Publications

Eating disorders are serious mental health conditions that are accompanied by negative health outcomes, high mortality rates, impaired functioning, and comorbid mental health conditions. Despite many empirically supported interventions for eating disorders, it remains one of the most challenging mental disorders to treat, as individuals often struggle to maintain treatment gains. One method of improving our understanding of effective eating disorder treatment is to identify important processes of change to target during therapy. The aim of the current study was to test two candidate mediators of disordered eating symptom change during residential treatment: self-compassion and body image inflexibility. In the …
