Trauma Informed Practices In Education, Simonne Starr
Trauma Informed Practices In Education, Simonne Starr
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Trauma-informed teaching has become widely known since the COVID-19 pandemic despite it being adopted into teaching practices after trauma-informed care was introduced by Harris and Fallot in 2001. Through the many years of research surrounding trauma and its impact on the brain of developing children, studies have addressed the in depth information on how trauma-informed teaching can pave the way of success for our students and support school personnel. This thesis will explore the research regarding trauma-informed care and teaching in order to further define what trauma is, how it can impact children and their learning process, how children perceive …

Life Space Crisis Intervention: A Comprehensive Approach To Supporting Students In Crisis, Mackinzee A. Hayes
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This paper explores the behavioral model Life Space Crisis Intervention (LSCI). It is a trauma-informed approach designed to address the behavioral and emotional needs of students who are impacted by trauma that are displaying challenging behaviors. A review of existing literature highlights LSCI’s effectiveness in reducing disruptive behavior, improving emotional regulation, and facilitating the reintegration into less restrictive educational settings. However, the research also reveals gaps, such as the need for longitudinal studies, more diverse settings of sample groups, and clearer mechanisms for successful implementation. In response, this paper presents two practical tools: a brochure and a professional development PowerPoint. …
The Formation And Impacts Of Student Self-Efficacy In The Secondary Science Classroom, Alan Daniel Swanson
The Formation And Impacts Of Student Self-Efficacy In The Secondary Science Classroom, Alan Daniel Swanson
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Student self-efficacy is a student’s belief that they can perform the tasks required to be successful in an academic setting. The focus of this research is how those beliefs are formed, how they impact student performance, and how teachers can increase student self-efficacy in the classroom. Self-efficacy foundations are examined as well as the impact positive self-efficacy beliefs have on student behavior and achievement. Educational practices that increase student self-efficacy are also summarized. A guide to implementing these strategies in the science classroom with an example is given, and connections to other research and future considerations are discussed.

The Impact Of Visuals And Graphic Organizers On Student Learning Of Social Studies, Nicole Eldred
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This literature review examines the impact of nonlinguistic teaching methods on enhancing student learning. The review covers studies on using visuals, Content Acquisition Podcasts (CAPs), videos, and animations to improve vocabulary and content comprehension. Additionally, it investigates graphic organizers in both interactive and pre-made formats as tools to support learning. The findings indicate that combining nonlinguistic and linguistic approaches can significantly increase student understanding. Complex visuals should be paired with verbal explanations and sufficient processing time. Videos are particularly effective for illustrating complex vocabulary. Graphic organizers require careful scaffolding to minimize cognitive load. Premade graphic organizers are effective tools, especially …

Flipping The Classroom: Exploring Engagement, Technology, And Student Perceptions, Ryan J. Oden
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This literature review examined the effects of the flipped classroom on student engagement, perceptions, and academic performance. It reviewed studies comparing student outcomes in flipped classrooms to traditional classrooms. Meta-analyses were used to support overall trends. Quantitative and qualitative results were used to support the effects in five areas of the flipped classroom: independent learning, active in-class sessions, teacher-student interaction, technology, and academic performance. Results suggest that the emphasis on independent learning fosters self-regulation, but students may require support when transitioning to this new model. Technology tools were shown to enhance out-of-class learning and motivation. The model facilitated stronger student-teacher …

The Impact Of Implementing A Four-Day School Week, Ashley Grittner
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis investigates the impact of the four-day school week (4DSW) on stakeholders in public education. It reports research on many impact areas such as student achievement, stakeholder well-being, and finances. While the 4DSW model shows promise in alleviating some financial and staffing pressures, its effects on academic and overall student well being outcomes are varied. This study also examines the potential for fifth-day programming to reduce negative impacts. Such programming may include targeted instruction to support struggling learners and offer enrichment for advanced students, which could mitigate academic drawbacks. Additionally, it explores the role of the 4DSW in improving …

This paper examines how student experience reports, collected as exit tickets, can be leveraged during professional learning to support science teachers’ understanding of their students and inform future classroom practices. Our analysis frames exit ticket data as a boundary object, which bridges across researchers’, teachers’, and students’ perspectives of the learning environment. During two successive professional learning activities, teachers examined and reflected upon their students’ exit ticket data. A thematic analysis of teachers’ discourse during these activities distilled two themes. The first theme surfaced how exit data helped teachers form new views about their students’ emerging science identities; the second …

Research Analytics Summit 2024
As more data analytics programs pop up, we see graduates with these degrees and certificates in our applicant pool. However, the analyst that works in higher ed administration is not like a data scientist that looks for biomarkers in genomic data or the programmer that writes in R all day. What are the skills needed for this job? What exactly is this job that we are hiring for? Should managers prioritize applicants with analytics certificates? Or is experience with sponsored projects more important? We (your presenters) don’t have perfect answers but we (the collective conference attendees) can come up with …

Smu Launches Urban Institute Focused On The Study Of Asian Cities, Singapore Management University
SMU Press Releases and News
As Asian cities urbanise at an unprecedented rate, urban policy-makers face the increasingly complex and pressing challenge of balancing urban growth with resilience and sustainability. With migration and the rapid flow of ideas online, old and new city-making practices have become uncomfortably entwined, resulting in contestation for space, resources, and municipal services. In response to megatrends that underscore the critical need to prioritise urban research, Singapore Management University (SMU) today launched the SMU Urban Institute (UI), a new research institute dedicated to multi- and inter-disciplinary research on cities in Asia. SMU UI will look beyond the development of infrastructure, and …

The Effect Of Phonemic Awareness Intervention On Reading Acquisition For Readers At Risk, Penny Doty
The Effect Of Phonemic Awareness Intervention On Reading Acquisition For Readers At Risk, Penny Doty
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Reading is a fundamental skill, which does not develop naturally, but rather requires careful and explicit instruction. Phonemic awareness has been identified as the most critical pre-reading skill for primary students (National Reading Panel, 2000). This literature review investigated how instruction and intervention in phonemic awareness is implemented for readers, what effect that intervention has, and why a research-to-practice gap exists despite research supporting its critical role in developing early reading skills. A total of 26 studies were reviewed with that focus in mind. The research showed that developing phonemic awareness both helped students gain decoding skills, learn to read, …

Businesses are rapidly adopting AI and GenAI tools to improve operational efficiency and outcomes. Meanwhile, education lags in AI adoption. The purpose of this thesis is to explore how businesses are leveraging AI and GenAI to achieve their goals and solve problems, while also examining how secondary educators, through the lens of the TPACK Framework, are preparing students to effectively use AI and GenAI tools. The TPACK model can evolve to include AI considerations and can structure a perspective from which to research the use and impact of AI and GenAI tools for educators. Teachers can improve their awareness and …
The Kids Are Alright: Risky Play As A Learning Device, Carlyn A. Shanley
The Kids Are Alright: Risky Play As A Learning Device, Carlyn A. Shanley
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Recent work has shown that risk-taking in both early childhood and adolescence has the capacity to positively affect the healthy physical, emotional, and social development of young people. Despite American society’s aversion to risk taking and emphasis on safety, research demonstrates many benefits of engaging in positive and prosocial risk-taking, such as increased self-efficacy, increased autonomy, and enhanced risk-management skills. Literature on adolescent brain development and its relationship to sensation seeking is reviewed to determine biological motivations for risky behavior. The evidence of increased sensation seeking in adolescence demonstrates a developmental purpose for risk-taking and demands additional research to determine …
