Indigenous Assimilation And Progressive Mirages: The Globalization Of American Narratives Of Educational Reform, Madhu Narayanan
Indigenous Assimilation And Progressive Mirages: The Globalization Of American Narratives Of Educational Reform, Madhu Narayanan
Educational Leadership and Policy Faculty Publications and Presentations
In 1928, the Institute for Government Research released the Meriam Report, a massive study of the nation’s Native Americans. Unflinchingly rational, the report criticized federal policy, but it also set a high-minded vision for Native American progress. Celebrated by the press at the time, hailed by historians in the following decades (Bertolet, 2007; Kelly, 1983, Philp, 1977, Szasz, 1974; Downs, 1945), the report became perceived as a turning point in the treatment of Native Americans and signaled a renewed faith in government. A century later, these reforms appear as mirages. In this paper, I show how the Meriam Report cloaks …

It is recommended that children engage in sixty minutes each day of physical activity. Many children do not achieve this goal. Schools are attempting to incorporate more movement into the school day without negatively impacting instructional time and academic outcomes. This research review aims to uncover three questions. How can schools incorporate more physical activity into students’ days? How will this additional movement impact students’ on-task performance and academic achievement? What impact will additional movement have on students with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and students with ADHD symptoms (deficits in executive function skills)?

The following literature review investigates current research focused on the neural networks involved in reading and the implications of the research on early literacy education and instruction. The neural network is located in the left hemisphere of the brain and consists of two distinct pathways utilized during word reading, a decoding pathway and a sight-recognition pathway. As a reader learns to read they primarily utilize the decoding pathway and as their proficiency increases the more efficient sight-recognition pathway is used more frequently. It is clear from the research that the most effective way to move students toward the use of …

This paper explores the behavioral model Life Space Crisis Intervention (LSCI). It is a trauma-informed approach designed to address the behavioral and emotional needs of students who are impacted by trauma that are displaying challenging behaviors. A review of existing literature highlights LSCI’s effectiveness in reducing disruptive behavior, improving emotional regulation, and facilitating the reintegration into less restrictive educational settings. However, the research also reveals gaps, such as the need for longitudinal studies, more diverse settings of sample groups, and clearer mechanisms for successful implementation. In response, this paper presents two practical tools: a brochure and a professional development PowerPoint. …

The Formation And Impacts Of Student Self-Efficacy In The Secondary Science Classroom, Alan Daniel Swanson
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Student self-efficacy is a student’s belief that they can perform the tasks required to be successful in an academic setting. The focus of this research is how those beliefs are formed, how they impact student performance, and how teachers can increase student self-efficacy in the classroom. Self-efficacy foundations are examined as well as the impact positive self-efficacy beliefs have on student behavior and achievement. Educational practices that increase student self-efficacy are also summarized. A guide to implementing these strategies in the science classroom with an example is given, and connections to other research and future considerations are discussed.

Flipping The Classroom: Exploring Engagement, Technology, And Student Perceptions, Ryan J. Oden
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This literature review examined the effects of the flipped classroom on student engagement, perceptions, and academic performance. It reviewed studies comparing student outcomes in flipped classrooms to traditional classrooms. Meta-analyses were used to support overall trends. Quantitative and qualitative results were used to support the effects in five areas of the flipped classroom: independent learning, active in-class sessions, teacher-student interaction, technology, and academic performance. Results suggest that the emphasis on independent learning fosters self-regulation, but students may require support when transitioning to this new model. Technology tools were shown to enhance out-of-class learning and motivation. The model facilitated stronger student-teacher …

This paper examines how student experience reports, collected as exit tickets, can be leveraged during professional learning to support science teachers’ understanding of their students and inform future classroom practices. Our analysis frames exit ticket data as a boundary object, which bridges across researchers’, teachers’, and students’ perspectives of the learning environment. During two successive professional learning activities, teachers examined and reflected upon their students’ exit ticket data. A thematic analysis of teachers’ discourse during these activities distilled two themes. The first theme surfaced how exit data helped teachers form new views about their students’ emerging science identities; the second …
