Mathematics Education Researchers’ Practices In Interdisciplinary Collaborations: Embracing Different Ways Of Knowing, Elizabeth Suazo-Flores, William S. Walker Iii, Signe E. Kastberg, Mahtob Aqazade, Hanan Alyami

Teaching, Leadership & Professional Practice Faculty Publications

Mathematics education researchers (MERs) use practices unique to the mathematics education discipline to conduct their work. MERs’ practices, i.e., ways of being, interacting, and operating, define the field of mathematics education, are initially learned in doctoral preparation programs, and are encouraged and sanctioned by conferences and publications. Disciplinary practices facilitate MERs’ interactions within mathematics education. When working in interdisciplinary groups, differences in disciplinary ways of being, interacting, and operating can create challenges with completing research and other work. Since MERs’ engagement in interdisciplinary collaborations is encouraged and can result in products contributing to the evolution of the mathematics education discipline, …

Young Adults’ Essential Food Skills And Cooking Perceptions: A Mixed Method Study, Marcy Gaston, J. Mitchell Vaterlaus, Nicole Wanago

Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences

Our purpose in this research study was to examine perceptions of food and nutrition educators (FNEs, i.e., Registered Dietitians Nutritionists and Family and Consumer Science teachers) and young adults (ages 18–25) on the status of cooking and food skills among young adults. Using a cross-sectional survey design, FNEs (n = 93) and college-attending young adults (n = 270) in the United States completed electronic surveys. The qualitative and quantitative data were collected and analyzed using a convergent mixed-methods approach. The qualitative data from open-ended survey responses collected from young adults and FNEs were analyzed using coding reliability thematic …

The Effects Of Class-Wide Function-Related Intervention Teams In A Self-Contained Elementary Classroom For Students With Emotional Or Behavioral Disorders, Peyton Ann Johnstone

Theses and Dissertations

Class-wide Function-related Intervention Teams (CW-FIT) is a classroom management intervention that incorporates positive behavior support (PBS) principles by teaching students specific classroom behavioral expectations during instructional time and providing students feedback on their behavior and use of social skills throughout the day. Students who are at risk for or are classified with Emotional or Behavioral Disorders (EBD) often struggle more both academically and socially than their peers. Because of the serious challenges that students with EBD face, it is important to find effective PBS interventions to help them be successful, both socially and academically. Researchers examined the effects of CW-FIT …

Objective: Our objective was to examine the perceptions regarding the teaching and learning of English of students in 16 undergraduate programs at a state public university in Mexico.

Method: In our qualitative case study, participating students responded to queries about their experiences learning English at the university, as well as their educational aspirations upon completion of their university studies.

Results: Despite their relevance to language immersion and competency, students struggle to combine prior experiences with current learning. Given Mexico’s English education system and past national initiatives, most participants say they still speak basic English. It is also clear that the …

Combating Trauma And The Immigrant Paradox In Schools, Emma Bergman Apr 2024

Combating Trauma And The Immigrant Paradox In Schools, Emma Bergman

Honors Projects

Over time, research on immigrant populations has revealed a trend known as the immigrant paradox in which, the further generations get from the generation of immigration, the poorer their outcomes are in areas such as mental health, delinquency, substance abuse, and education. Though a definitive explanation for this trend has yet to be identified, prevailing theories include several social, familial, and community-based factors such as the impacts of bilingualism, parental expectations, biculturalism, co-ethnic peers, quality of schools, and community support. Little attention has been paid to individual factors such as mental health and trauma. The present study proposes the transgenerational …

Sexual Health Education Scope And Sequence, Sara Wadsworth Apr 2024

Sexual Health Education Scope And Sequence, Sara Wadsworth

Honors Projects

Based on a significant amount of prior research, comprehensive sexuality education (CSE) has been identified to be the most effective method of teaching sexual health education (SHAPE America, 2021; World Health Organization, 2023). Comprehensive sexual health education improves healthy behaviors and outcomes, provides useful information, and is positively perceived by students (Gardner, 2015; Kirby, 2002; Robinson et al., 2022). However, the United States’ current sexual health education has not implemented this ideal method, which is shown through state laws, students’ experiences, underdeveloped skills and flawed understanding of concepts, and – most importantly – a lack of resources for teachers (Foley, …

Chromebook Charging: Motivation Through Personification, Emma Helmuth Apr 2024

Chromebook Charging: Motivation Through Personification, Emma Helmuth

ATU Scholars Symposium

This research study was conducted to provide a solution to students arriving at first-period classes with uncharged Chromebooks. The research questions ask if personification will motivate students to charge their Chromebooks before arriving at their first-period class. Prior literature shows that students are more likely to accomplish goals when they are motivated, both intrinsically and extrinsically. Hence, this study focuses on personification to motivate students. Students’ Chromebooks will be personified to be “pets”, through animal stickers and name badge stickers. The end goal is to see an increase in student preparedness by coming to class with charged Chromebooks. For this …

Frameworks For Balancing Care And Excellence In Higher Education (Chapter 2), Daniel L. Dinsmore, Carolyne Ali-Khan

Education: Faculty Publications

In this chapter, we explain our theoretical grounding and provide a framework for what follows. We outline the twin purposes of this book, as we explain our conceptions of care and excellence and the relationship between the two. Like all academic texts our work here stands about other established frameworks, and we diagram this to illustrate where this text fits in the field. Finally, we include an overview of the chapters that follow to serve as a reader guide.

A Small Festschrift In A Big World (Chapter 1), Carolyne Ali-Khan, Daniel L. Dinsmore

Education: Faculty Publications

In this chapter, we provide our personal contexts for Balancing Care and Excellence in Higher Education: A Festschrift in Honor of Jeffrey Cornett. In so doing, we address the place of care and excellence in the 2020’s in our lives through a critical lens, and we examine the ways that these have led to this book. We also place this book in broader contexts to analyze the ways that care has been distorted and weaponized. Further, we examine how care is operationalized in higher education. Through all of this, we argue that each of us bears responsibility for reclaiming care. …

BIO4960: Practicum in Biology I

Denial of pregnancy, or cryptic pregnancy, presents a complex situation where individuals are unaware of their pregnancy until the late stages of labor. This study delves into the multifaceted nature of concealed and denied pregnancies, exploring their prevalence, factors contributing to them, and their implications for both individuals and healthcare systems. By reviewing relevant literature and case studies, we aim to illuminate the difficulties healthcare providers face in identifying and managing cases of denial of pregnancy. Additionally, we stress the significance of proactive screening and comprehensive care to ensure the well-being of mothers and infants. This research endeavors to deepen …
