The purpose of this research was to determine if selected problem-solving skills of freshmen nursing students in an associate-degree nursing program could be enhanced by an instructional strategy that combined simulated patient encounters with two types of feedback obtained from experienced nurses. The skills were: (1) the detection, encoding, and retrieval of cues and (2) the generation of tentative problem formulations. Six videotaped simulations of nurse-patient encounters were shown to a group of experienced nurses, who were asked to write tentative problem formulations with relevant cues and summarizing assessments of the situations. Making Routine Curriculum Changes At The College Of William And Mary In Virginia: Are Faculty Influenced By Trends In Students' Pursuits?, Anne M. Pratt

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

In a study published in 1978, Manns and March found that university curricula do change in response to financial adversity. Based on a model proposed by Cohen and March, Manns and March said that it was necessary for departments to stimulate demand for enrollment in order to secure resources. They proposed that competition for resources would encourage competition among departments. Departments most in need of maintaining demand would change most; those least in need of maintaining demand would change least.;Manns and March also noted that academia has traditions about change that could have influenced the process. Thus, there may have …

A Study Of The Dual Role As Athletic Director And Principal, James A. Cook

The purpose of this study was to investigate job satisfaction perceptions of individuals holding positions which combined the functions of principal and athletic direction. Specifically, this study compared actual workload with desired workload, (i.e., that which would provide a reasonable amount of job satisfaction). The study was predicated on the research findings that indicate that the amount of work is relative to a given individual as opposed to being an absolute quality.

A review of the research and literature revealed that few publications have been targeted toward workload and the dual educational administrator. The implications of job-related work, as it …

A Study Of Video Services In Iowa Public Libraries, Robert Philip Moore

One of the ongoing concerns of public libraries today has been the selection of materials and services that best meets the diverse needs and interests of their communities. Nevertheless, the problems of audiovisual selection and services have been amplified due to incompatible formats. Careless selection has resulted in obsolete equipment and idle software.

The self-concepts of such individuals have often been neglected or overlooked.

Survey Of Language Acquisition Techniques Provided By Parents Of Talented And Gifted Children, Sharon Engen Jan 1984

Survey Of Language Acquisition Techniques Provided By Parents Of Talented And Gifted Children, Sharon Engen

Dissertations and Theses

Most of the studies on language acquisition techniques provided by parents have been addressed to the training of parents for prevention of language disabilities and disorders (Latzke, 1975). Few investigations have involved language acquisition of the superior functioning child (Patterson, 1981). Hence, the purpose of this study was to survey language acquisition techniques provided by parents of talented and gifted children (TAG) who were enrolled in the Beaverton School District Number 48 TAG program. The first question dealt with what materials and/or equipment did the parents use in aiding their child's language development. The second question dealt with which particular …

Four Major Components Of A Behavioral Objective And The Advantage Of Using Behavioral Objectives, Jon Beringer Jan 1984

Four Major Components Of A Behavioral Objective And The Advantage Of Using Behavioral Objectives, Jon Beringer

Graduate Research Papers

Certainly everyone who has ever attended a lecture, seminar, or class has undoubtedly asked themself, what purpose was served by that presentation. Unfortunately, there may also be those times when lecturers have to ask themselves the same question. When this situation occurs the result is a waste of money, resources, time, and human energy. This waste, and many other problems, could be eliminated with the use of well-written behavioral objectives. But there seems to be a resistance to using behavioral objectives by many of those who are involved in message design and instruction. Many reasons exist which tell why message …

Halloween Spooks In The Esl Classroom: Holidays As A Means Of Introducing Culture, Sonya Fletcher Kennedy Jan 1984

Halloween Spooks In The Esl Classroom: Holidays As A Means Of Introducing Culture, Sonya Fletcher Kennedy

MA TESOL Collection

In this project I would like to suggest to the ESL teacher some ways of introducing culture into the classroom by discussing holidays. Each holiday is presented with a text followed by a variety of activities designed for students, in or out of the U.S., with a minimum of one hundred and twenty hours of English instruction. Although I have written this project with adult classes in mind, most of the activities can be adapted for children. Judging from my own experience, the size of the class can be anywhere from seven to twenty-two students.

I will cover Halloween, Thanksgiving, …

Indonesia Union College : A Historical Study Of A Seventh-Day Adventist Institution, Rajoaman Nainggolan Jan 1984

Indonesia Union College : A Historical Study Of A Seventh-Day Adventist Institution, Rajoaman Nainggolan

Dissertations

Problem

The first Seventh-day Adventist training school established in Indonesia was the Netherlands East Indies Training School (Indonesia Union College after 1962) founded in 1929. The school has since grown considerably and achieved university status, but no comprehensive history of it has been written. This lack points to a need for a systematic examination of the development of Seventh-day Adventist higher education in Indonesia. This study reconstructs the history of this institution from 1929 to 1970.

Method

The documentary-historical method, based on published and unpublished materials, was used. Materials included books, periodicals, school bulletins, minutes of the Indonesia Union Mission, …

Examiner Bias And Intelligence Test Scoring : A Study Of The Effect Of Speech-Handicapped Responses On The Scoring Of The Wisc-R Comprehension Subtest, Julia B. Peyser Jan 1984

Examiner Bias And Intelligence Test Scoring : A Study Of The Effect Of Speech-Handicapped Responses On The Scoring Of The Wisc-R Comprehension Subtest, Julia B. Peyser

Dissertations

Problem

One of the concerns in education today is bias in intelligence tests. Examiner bias and the expectancy effect is largely ignored. An unexplored variable in the research is an examinee's speech handicap and the effect it may produce in the scoring of an intelligence test.

Method

Identical responses to the Comprehension subtest of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised were audiotaped on separate cassettes by two children, one with and one with no speech handicap. Sixty-four examiners, thirty-two practicing psychologists and thirty-two graduate students of psychology, were randomly assigned to score the responses on one of the tapes. Sixteen …
