Teachers And Their Communities: A Group Self-Assessment, Using A Cross-Cultural Approach, Timothy Butterworth

MA TESOL Collection

These are troubling times for public education in the United States. Declining College Board scores, public dissatisfaction and a shortage of qualified applicants have brought the crisis to national attention. However, becoming a political football in the 1984 political campaigns is not likely to improve the situation. Teachers and prospective teachers would do well to examine carefully their motives for teaching and the roles they choose to play in their careers. Without a clear self-image, and one they can share with each other, teachers are doomed to alienation and frustration in coming to terms with the debate that is swirling …

The final part of the paper focuses on a framework for teaching sounds. …

Naming The World: Writing, Reading, And Culture In A Refugee Esl Class, Nancy Ann Reuschel

Techniques for teaching reading and writing to ESL learners "include ones derived from both L1 literacy methods and L2 oral methods. In both categories, some methods, and consequently some techniques, utilize cultural materials from outside the classroom and the learners' culture. Others use materials with no overt cultural content. Still other methods use learner-created materials. These differing methods are explored for their potential in teaching both literacy and culture. The culture- and literacy- learning experience of one Asian-refugee ESL class: multi-level, multi-age, multi-ethnic, and rural, is described. Learners wrote their own reading materials; largely based on pictures from Asian and …

In tracing the development of the image, the concept of saga, defined by Clark (1968) as an historically based understanding of organizational development was viewed as the theoretical basis for the study. Four factors were found to have a positive impact upon the development of the selective image of the College. (1) The restoration and growth of Colonial …

The Use And Effect Of Puppetry And Bibliotherapy In Group Counseling With Children Of Divorced Parents, Kenneth Paul Bunting Jan 1984

The Use And Effect Of Puppetry And Bibliotherapy In Group Counseling With Children Of Divorced Parents, Kenneth Paul Bunting

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

For many years, the technique of puppetry has been successfully utilized within child counseling programs (Jenkins and Beckh, 1942) (Grant, 1950) (Koenig, 1951) (Dinkmeyer and Caldwell, 1970). Only recently the use of puppets was popularized by the introduction of the DUSO program (Dinkmeyer 1970, 1973). In fact, puppetry was cited as a potentially invaluable intervention strategy to facilitate affective educational programs to help stimulate young children to explore their feelings. However, little experimental evidence was gleaned from the literature to support the efficacy of the puppetry techniques (Strage, 1979) (Zingle, 1972) (Buffalo Public School System Project, 1975). Only testimonial and …

Toward A Concise Definition And Perspective For Biology, Arthur V. Brown, Kristine Basinger Brown Jan 1984

Toward A Concise Definition And Perspective For Biology, Arthur V. Brown, Kristine Basinger Brown

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The content of introductory biology courses at the high school and college levels are currently being re-examined. Many biological educators favor revision of the high school biology courses to a format that directly addresses current social issues to "promote good citizenship". We believe it would be more meaningful to teach the fundamental principles of biology, the study of living systems. Properly defining biology, by defining a living system, should help identify important topics to include in a basic biology course. Emphasis should be placed on subjects which would contribute most to the development of a basic understanding of how all …

Teacher Participation In Administrative Decision-Making And Its Effects On Teacher Morale, Adrian Paul Talbot Jan 1984

Teacher Participation In Administrative Decision-Making And Its Effects On Teacher Morale, Adrian Paul Talbot

Graduate Research Papers

As demands made upon administrators, teachers, and schools increase, the decisions which principals make often have to be justified to people who are outside the immediate educational circle. Many of these decisions are extremely complex and place the principal, who tries to shoulder the burden alone, under considerable pressure. It would seem that the days of the successful autocrat are numbered. In an attempt to deal with this problem, writers (Guba, 1960; Dallas, 1978) have proposed ideas which would involve teachers to a far greater extent in the decisionmaking process, supporting the old adage that 11many heads are better than …
