Students who are new-to-country and arrive with limited or interrupted formal education (SLIFE) are increasing in number in Minnesota schools, which is forecasted to continue to grow. Many of these students arrive with trauma, and this ultimately impacts their continued educational experience. Based on student perspectives, schools must be better prepared to receive these students and provide the education they need to ensure their future success. This phenomenological case study aimed to understand whether current program models within a high school in the metro area of Minnesota best served new-to-country SLIFE students. Seligman’s Theory of Well Being (2011) and Maslow’s …

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In my dissertation, Understanding the Lived Experiences of Minnesota's PSEO Students: A Qualitative Exploration, I explored students’ experiences of the transition from high school to college via Minnesota’s PSEO program. As a Bethel University faculty member with 19 years of prior experience as a high school English teacher, I have watched the number of PSEO students increase year after year from both sides of the secondary/post-secondary divide. This subtle undoing of the traditional high school to college progression significantly impacts not only the economic outlook for public high schools and colleges, but it also significantly impacts the educational experiences and …

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This study used a mixed method research design and employed an explanatory sequential design, which collected, analyzed, and combined both quantitative and qualitative methods to explore why adult, non-traditional students would apply to a college, but not enroll. This disconnect affects not only the applicant, but also the institution, as multiple resources for both parties will be utilized and not recovered. The quantitative component of the study included data from an established segment of applicants who did not enroll at Thomas Edison State University (TESU). The qualitative component utilized a phenomenological approach and included the data gathered through interviews with …

A Localized Strategy To Boost Public Opinion And Increase Community Support For Rural Public Education By Understanding Parental Motivations For School Choice, Stephanie Marie Lambrecht

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Families and educators understand school choice as a broad concept, however its implications for rural public education in Virginia are less frequently considered. In rural areas, school choice has a disproportionate impact due to funding formulas and the effects of average daily membership (ADM) on school budgets. While there is a great deal of research on school choice, the rationale behind families’ decisions varies depending on the cultural and material resources of their community. It is vital to consider the regional and cultural context when developing strategies to support rural public schools. By analyzing motivations and factors which influence school …

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a multifaceted condition that affects individuals in unique ways. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC, 2020), people with ASD have a neurological disorder that impacts communication, social interaction, and behavior. One common ASD evaluation tool is the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule 2 (ADOS-2), which helps a clinician decide if the student exhibits social and communication skills expected of someone with or without ASD. Since ASD is a disorder for which symptoms need to be present within the early developmental period, it is common for schools and pediatricians to be initial sources of referral …

Navigating The Crossroads: Peer Academic Support, On-Campus Work Experiences, And The Journey Toward Self-Authorship, Sarah Michelle Kofler

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Leaders of higher education institutions often articulate goals for undergraduate students’ academic and social development that correspond with the essential learning outcomes identified by the American Association of Colleges and Universities. The achievement of these objectives requires students to hone skills, abilities, and ways of thinking that align with the development of self-authorship. To assist students’ development, universities often provide an array of services and opportunities for engagement, including academic support services and on-campus work experiences. Until this research, the impact of the intersection of these elements remained unexamined. Astin’s input-environment-outcome model and Baxter Magolda’s theory of self-authorship served as …

Continent Imaginaries Across Time Official Educational Discourse From The Progressive Usa To Unesco, Madhu Narayanan Jan 2025

Continent Imaginaries Across Time Official Educational Discourse From The Progressive Usa To Unesco, Madhu Narayanan

Educational Leadership and Policy Faculty Publications and Presentations

In 1928, the United States Government published the Meriam Report. Almost a century later, the 2023 Global Education Monitoring (GEM) Report was released by UNESCO. In this paper I put these documents in conversation to trace the common ideological threads woven into the transition from a colonial era to our globalised world of mass schooling. The two reports seemingly have distinct emphases. A fixation on imperial expansion, Indigenous assimilation, and administrative progress gives way to the centrality of measurement, human rights, and building a transnational community. There are differences in form, vocabulary, grammar, and medium. But there is a unity …

OER Materials

This is a read-aloud planning template for the story The Letter from the book Frog and Toad are Friends, which holds five stories. The goal of the assignment is to create an effective read-aloud. Research supports these as they can expose children to new words and language structures (Burkins & Yates, 2021). Cunningham et al. (2023) also explain interactive read-alouds as a way to “immerse students in rich content.” The author was given a list of stories from the anthology, The 20th Century Children’s Book Treasury: Picture Books and Stories to Read Aloud, from instructor Dr. David Wolff, who …

The Effect Of Covid-19 Lockdowns And Social Isolation On Adolescence, Madeleine J. Bakken

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Adolescents around the world were impacted by social isolation resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. Students experienced sudden school closures and isolation from classmates resulting in increased screen time, the erosion of social skills, lower academic motivation, and a period of unstructured and unfamiliar learning (Hong et al., 2022; Kannan & Veazie, 2023; Leventhal & Morishta, 2024; Menzies et al., 2024; Warford, 2019). Current research is working to measure the impact and severity of these factors. Early findings suggest that students are academically and emotionally behind where their predecessors were pre-COVID (Menzies et al. 2023; NWEA Connection, 2024). Educators and mental …
