Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders

Simulated learning experiences (SLEs) are becoming increasingly popular in communication sciences and disorders (CSD) training programs. This pilot study examines the relative effectiveness of delivering a SLE via standard computer or using virtual reality headsets for a more immersive learning experience. Seventy undergraduate CSD students were randomly assigned to complete the same SLE using one of these two modes of delivery to explore the technology’s effect on learning outcomes and self-confidence. Although no statistically significant difference in outcomes was observed, medium effects of intervention were observed on all outcomes, suggesting further is research is needed into the impact different technologies …

Regardless of entry point, nearly all potential speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in the United States (US) share the experience of navigating the arduous application process for graduate school. For students of color, especially first-generation students, this application process can serve to cause them to question whether they belong in the field. This may be one of the key factors that manifests itself in the lack of diversity within the profession. U.S. higher educational institutions have increasingly implemented diversity requirements; however, institutional power dynamics during the implementation process and in a classroom after the implementation should be more highlighted. This study aims to understand the implementation of a diversity requirement during the implementation process and faculty and student experiences within required diversity courses at Portland State University (PSU) by analyzing one-on-one semi-structured interviews. PSU is a minority-serving educational institution that implemented a diversity requirement, the Race and Ethnic Studies Requirement (RESR), in Fall 2022. This article describes a collaborative project across multiple institutions to compare two versions of a regression activity: (a) a website version that collected student data through an online simulation with corresponding apps for visualization and (b) a traditional paper handout version that had a static dataset. This allowed us to evaluate the differences in student learning and attitudes when students have a stronger connection with the data through an interactive—and hopefully fun—data-collection process than they do when they are given a worksheet with a pre-collected dataset. This study examines the concept of entrepreneurial citizenship and how it shapes entrepreneurs who embody both integrity and business acumen within the context of citizenship. Employing a qualitative approach with case study methodology, this research explores how the characteristics of civic entrepreneurs contribute to the development of business leaders who integrate civic values with entrepreneurial intelligence. Data collection methods include in-depth interviews with entrepreneurs exhibiting strong entrepreneurial citizenship attributes, participant observation, and the analysis of relevant documents. The findings reveal that entrepreneurs who adopt the principles of entrepreneurial citizenship tend to demonstrate a heightened awareness of social and environmental responsibility, …

Effective learning strategies were developed, implemented, and applied at five separate institutions of higher education in the United States, and one in the Middle East. The research has been dedicated to determining effective learning strategies for student learning and success. The research series developed grading rubric for homework and exams, developed a course structure for hybrid and face-to-face courses in STEM, and studied the impact of the syllabus design on student learning and motivation. A pedagogical methodology constituting the designed course structure was utilized to use various activity-based modules. Purpose: The purpose of this qualitative study was to identify and describe how emergency medicine (EM) physicians in leadership roles use the six EI leadership competencies related to relationship management (inspiration, influence, developing others, change catalyst, conflict management, and teamwork and collaboration) to lead teams and accomplish effective results. Methodology: This phenomenological study described the lived experiences of emergency medicine (EM) physician leaders in San Bernadino, Riverside, and Orange counties in Southern California. In Spring 2020, colleges across the nation swiftly transitioned their operations—including both classes and student support services—to remote delivery on an emergency basis in response to the crisis posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. While prior research has documented that the transition was associated with decrements in student outcomes, there remains limited understanding of the organizational factors that might have mitigated these negative associations during the pandemic. Drawing on administrative data from the California Community College system, along with a novel survey conducted among distance education leaders, our study reveals that the degree of declines in course completion and course passing …
