Instructional Coaching: An Essential Element For Building And Maintaining Instructional Capacity, Alison Hawley Mar 2015

Instructional Coaching: An Essential Element For Building And Maintaining Instructional Capacity, Alison Hawley

Dissertations

The focus of this study is to explore the role of the school leader, specifically the principal, in leading instructional change and supporting teachers throughout the change process. Building instructional capacity across a school building is an essential role for a school leader, but also requires ownership and agency on the part of teachers to be active partners in realizing change. The process of full-scale change impacts members of the school community in different ways. Identifying the predictable patterns of adult responses often associated with change can help the instructional leader anticipate the supports necessary to keep the change moving …

Factors That Contribute To High School Drop-Outs Earning Their High School Diploma, Anne M. Gottlieb Mar 2015

Factors That Contribute To High School Drop-Outs Earning Their High School Diploma, Anne M. Gottlieb

Dissertations

What happens to young people that leave or are put out of their high school before they earn their diploma? Some of them attempt to re-enter school and earn their diploma. This study identifies factors that help students re-engage in their educational journeys. Two research questions guide this work:

  • What factors prohibit high school drop outs from earning their diploma and working towards a post-high school goal?
  • What can schools do to promote the factors that help students graduate and work towards a post-high school goal?

Relevant literature offers information about the dropout epidemic in the United States, what other …

Research-To-Practice Brief: Promising Evidence That Early Head Start Can Prevent Child Maltreatment, Rachel Chazan-Cohen, Beth L. Green, Catherine Ayoub, Jessica Dym Bartlett, Adam Von Ende, Carrie Jeanne Furrer Mar 2015

Research-To-Practice Brief: Promising Evidence That Early Head Start Can Prevent Child Maltreatment, Rachel Chazan-Cohen, Beth L. Green, Catherine Ayoub, Jessica Dym Bartlett, Adam Von Ende, Carrie Jeanne Furrer

Child Abuse & Neglect Prevention

This brief addresses two main questions in a sample of Early Head Start eligible children: 1) the number and type of maltreatment episodes and 2) the impact of Early Head Start on child and family involvement in the child welfare system. These findings are especially important given the lack of scalable and effective preventive interventions. In addition, they are also timely given the recent interest in fostering collaborations between early care and education programs and child welfare agencies, agencies responsible for overseeing child protection from maltreatment (OHS & ACYF, 2010; ACYF & OHS, 2011; ACYF & OCC, 2011). The current …

Measuring The Impact Of A Ninth Grade Academy On Tenth Grade Performance In Academics, Attendance, And Behavior, Dan Snipes Mar 2015

Measuring The Impact Of A Ninth Grade Academy On Tenth Grade Performance In Academics, Attendance, And Behavior, Dan Snipes

Dissertations, Theses and Capstone Projects (Full IR Collection)

Ninth Grade Academies were designed to smooth the transition of rising ninth graders academically and behaviorally. Current research has addressed the long-term effects of Ninth Grade Academies on academics, behavior, and graduation rates. This literature has shown the Ninth Grade Academy to be moderately effective in improving graduation rates but have only limited success in retention, disciplinary action rates, and academic performance. To measure the impact a Ninth Grade Academy has on tenth grade performance in academics, behavior, and attendance data was compared from two schools: School A (which has a Ninth Grade Academy) and School B (which has a …

What Stick Figures Tell Us About Irish Politics: Creating A Critical And Collaborative Learning Space, Sharon Feeney, John Hogan, Paul Donnelly Mar 2015

What Stick Figures Tell Us About Irish Politics: Creating A Critical And Collaborative Learning Space, Sharon Feeney, John Hogan, Paul Donnelly

Articles

This paper focuses upon the interpretation of freehand drawings produced by a small sample of 220 first-year students taking an Irish politics introductory module in response to the question, ‘What is Irish Politics?’ By sidestepping cognitive verbal processing routes, through employing freehand drawing, we aim to create a critical and collaborative learning environment, where students develop their capacity for interpretation and critical self-reflection. This is because the freehand drawing technique, as part of a critical pedagogy, can generate a more critical and inclusive perspective, as visual representations permit us to comprehend the world differently, and understand how others also see …

Teaching Naked Is More Than A Game [A Review By Elizabeth Sutton For Teaching Naked: How Moving Technology Out Of Your College Classroom Will Improve Student Learning, By José Antonio Bowen], Elizabeth Sutton Mar 2015

Teaching Naked Is More Than A Game [A Review By Elizabeth Sutton For Teaching Naked: How Moving Technology Out Of Your College Classroom Will Improve Student Learning, By José Antonio Bowen], Elizabeth Sutton

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

The title of José Bowen’s book, Teaching Naked, is meant to garner second looks. Indeed, his title follows a premise of his book: marketing matters. But selling a book is different from selling the value of an education. The latter is what Bowen suggests technology can help us do. Bowen does not want to eradicate technology from teaching. Far from it. He makes the case that technology should be used to enhance student engagement and should be used outside of class time so that classes can be focused on the face-to-face pedagogies that he identifies as the strength and …

A Study On Access Scores And Map Data, Deborah Lynn Pearson

Dissertations

English Language Learners (ELLs) are no longer a part of specific areas of America. They have crossed all classroom boundaries of the United States. This means as ELLs have integrated into the classrooms, educators are becoming versed in methods and strategies to help ELLs learn and achieve proficiency on standardized assessments. The purpose of this study was to determine if ELLs learned enough to be proficient in English to do well on a standardized test as their non-ELL peers. The Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) and the Assessing Comprehension and Communication in English State to State (ACCESS) were the two exams …

Teaching For Conversion: A History Of The Fundamentals, The Objective, And The Gospel Teaching And Learning Handbook For Seminaries And Institutes Of Religion In The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, Adam Smith

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to document the history and the contributing factors that led to the formation of the Current Teaching Emphasis (2003), the Objective (2009), and the Gospel Teaching and Learning Handbook (2012) within Seminaries and Institutes of Religion (S&I) for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The analysis of this history, contained herein, clearly identifies the principles that have driven the changes in S&I's description of teaching and learning, describes how these adjustments differ from previous approaches, illustrates the significance of this shift, and presents the contemporary issues that influenced the increased clarity and …

Perceptions Of Individuals With Disabilities In The Justice Systemabout Their Transition Preparation, Justine Nicole Howarth Mar 2015

Perceptions Of Individuals With Disabilities In The Justice Systemabout Their Transition Preparation, Justine Nicole Howarth

Theses and Dissertations

This study gathered information about adults with disabilities who were served with special education services during high school and incarcerated after high school, on their job preparation plan and explored the effects of that preparation on the individual's perception of successful transition after high school. It also investigated what, if anything, could have been done in high school to prevent their entrance or continuation in the criminal justice system. Due to the difficulty in accessing this population, only three individuals were interviewed. However, the rich information provided from this study indicated that to help them live independently and successfully transition …

Parents And The Common Core State Standards For Mathematics, Rebecca Anne Roberts Mar 2015

Parents And The Common Core State Standards For Mathematics, Rebecca Anne Roberts

Theses and Dissertations

As the majority of the nation has adopted Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM), studying parents' resistance to these standards becomes vital in improving parental involvement and support of school mathematics reforms. Using Schoenfeld's (2011) model for decision making as a framework, an online survey and six interviews were conducted. The results of the survey showed that parents' resources related to student experiences and the mathematical methods students are performing are affecting their resistance toward CCSSM. The survey results also showed that parents' orientations related to the difficulty of the standards and politics affects their resistance toward CCSSM. The …

An Investigation Of The Impact Of A Flipped Classroom Instructional Approach On High School Students' Content Knowledge And Attitudes Toward The Learning Environment, Matthew R. Bell Mar 2015

An Investigation Of The Impact Of A Flipped Classroom Instructional Approach On High School Students' Content Knowledge And Attitudes Toward The Learning Environment, Matthew R. Bell

Theses and Dissertations

The idea of the “flipped classroom” is a relatively new concept in education that has become increasingly popular. Instructors who flip their classrooms reverse the roles of school work and homework by recording video lectures for students to watch before coming to class. Students then work on their homework in the classroom while the instructor is present to help them. Very little research has been done on the effectiveness of the flipped classroom to determine if students can perform better on exams by learning in a flipped classroom environment, especially for high school demographics. The purpose of this research is …

Tenure: A Communal Privilege For Service, Not An Individual Privilege For Research, Steven Kessler Mar 2015

Tenure: A Communal Privilege For Service, Not An Individual Privilege For Research, Steven Kessler

Journal of Educational Leadership in Action

Tenure is commonly understood as a privilege earned by individuals in higher education guaranteeing a lifetime appointment barring gross negligence. To individuals outside of higher education, the tenure process is less clear. Contemporary tenure is earned today largely for research and teaching with the heaviest emphasis on research. The third leg of tenure, service, is often neglected or discouraged in the rewards structure. While this information is widely known in higher education, the irony of this system is not. This paper aims to explore higher education’s historical roots as a medieval corporation in explaining the origins of tenure. Tenure originally …

Teacher Candidates Learn To Create Teacher Websites To Support Student Success Through Student, Parent And Community Engagement, Jennifer Laffier, Meaghan Clarke, Alanna Houston

Journal of Educational Leadership in Action

‘Theory to practice’ based learning activities are important for teachers in training. Therefore, as part of a course in a Bachelor of Education program in Ontario, Canada teacher candidates learned how to create effective teacher websites to promote the healthy development of students as well as engage students, parents, and the community in the learning environment. Student, parent, and community engagement are considered key elements of student success. This learning activity and how teacher candidates developed effective websites based on theories of healthy development and student success were explored in this paper. First, the research related to teacher websites is …

Developing And Implementing Principal And Teacher Evaluation Systems In Mississippi, Kristen Dechert, Lois Kappler, Alexis Nordin

Journal of Educational Leadership in Action

In 2013-2014, the Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) implemented statewide the Mississippi Principal Evaluation System (MPES) and select components of the Mississippi Teacher Evaluation System (MTES). Now overseen by the Office of Educator Quality, these instruments and the professional development that accompanied them were originally developed collaboratively by the MDE’s Office of Federal Programs, Teacher Center, and Office of Career and Technical Education in order to help identify best practices for their principals and teachers, as well as to illuminate areas for improvement. Elements of both the MPES and MTES were piloted in 2012-2013.

While offering an opportunity to reinvigorate …

Cornerstone: An Experiment In Interdisciplinarity And Community, April Chatham-Carpenter, Deirdre Bucher Heistad Mar 2015

Cornerstone: An Experiment In Interdisciplinarity And Community, April Chatham-Carpenter, Deirdre Bucher Heistad

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

This forum, on the First-Year Cornerstone course at the University of Northern Iowa (UNI), tells the story of the creation, collaboration, community, and cultivation of learning that has developed as a result of teaching a course across various disciplines and divisions, with a longevity different from anything else that has been tried at UNI in such a vein. It focuses on the work taken to effectively cross multiple disciplinary and divisional boundaries in order to create an interdisciplinary academic course community for first-year students.

Prior to 2008, UNI had virtually no courses reserved exclusively for first-year students, and those initiatives …

How Cornerstone Changed My Teaching, Story 3, Doug Shaw Mar 2015

How Cornerstone Changed My Teaching, Story 3, Doug Shaw

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

When I started as a mathematics professor at the University of Northern Iowa, I was the “teaching radical” in my department. I was using the newest techniques, and I knew The Way. After a dozen years had passed, I had become a fuddy-duddy, set in his ways, and hadn’t really realized it. My “newest techniques” weren’t that new, nor had I really examined them in years, while some other professors in the department were experimenting with the real cutting edge in mathematics instruction.

Another Cornerstone Collaboration: The Common Read And The “Not Just Any Book!” Club, Emily Borcherding, Ellen Neuhaus

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

As part of the maturing of the Cornerstone efforts, there have been more opportunities for collaboration between different campus units, such as the Rod Library and the Academic Learning Center. The more campus collaborations which have developed have led to a greater variety of resources and services for students to have a richer Cornerstone experience.

Project Sourcing For Capstone Course Experience From An Undergraduate Program, Benjamin Gan, Venky Shankararaman Mar 2015

Project Sourcing For Capstone Course Experience From An Undergraduate Program, Benjamin Gan, Venky Shankararaman

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Capstone project courses give students experience solving a substantial problem using concepts that span several topic areas in the program of study. Having 280 students graduate every year, requires a substantial effort towards sourcing appropriate projects from the industry and academia that provide hands-on opportunity to apply IT solutions to problems. This paper presents two sourcing models for supporting the sourcing of capstone projects. For each model, the various project origination sources, the distinct attributes, the challenges and lessons learnt are discussed.

Reality In Shakespeare And The Digital World [A Review By John Sievers Of Shakespeare And The Digital World: Redefining Scholarship And Practice, Edited By Christie Carson And Peter Kirwan], John Sievers

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

The collection of essays edited by Christie Carson and Peter Kirwan, Shakespeare and the Digital World: Redefining Scholarship and Practice, came to me at a pertinent moment. I started reading it after I had pushed a squeaky-wheeled cart full of twenty-eight iPads to class, then used a document camera displaying my iPad and fingers to show the class how to search a database. Later that day, I also observed a student use a smartphone-based online dictionary app to hear how to pronounce Ceres. The student then used his new knowledge to further a group discussion about scansion in lines …

Open Access Publishing And The Ends Of Scholarship, Fred Rascoe

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

. In October of 2014, at the 29th International Conference on Medievalism held in Atlanta, I was privileged to co-host (along with J. Britt Holbrook from the Georgia Tech School of Public Policy) a panel on “Open Access in the Academy.” It was a large panel that featured many medieval scholars who engaged with each other and the audience on what Open Access means to their discipline, to their careers, and to humanities scholarship in general. The panel discussion was filmed and is available to view in SMARTech (Hahn, et al., 2014), but with this brief column I wanted …

The Reception Of Mao's 'Talks At The Yan'an Forum On Literature And Art' In English-Language Scholarship, Qilin Fu Mar 2015

The Reception Of Mao's 'Talks At The Yan'an Forum On Literature And Art' In English-Language Scholarship, Qilin Fu

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "The Reception of Mao's 'Talks at the Yan'an Forum on Literature and Art' in English-language Scholarship" Qilin Fu examines the three waves of the reception of Mao Zedong's 1942 text. Fu elaborates on the understandings of Mao's ideas about literature and art and discusses the changes depending on historical and political contexts. Fu argues that the changes are explicit or implicit representations of cultural politics ranging from an anti-communist criticism based on Cold War ideology to the concerns of literary theory and the cultural critique of discourse in the context of globalization.
