"My Brain Doesn't Work Like That" Creating Success With Non-Traditional (And Traditional) Learners By Accommodating Learning, Jane Bluestein

National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Conference

So many of the kids we identify as “at risk” have learning preferences and needs that may not be an ideal match for the way they are being taught or how they are expected to learn. For adults whose learning styles are somewhat more traditional, it can be hard to understand kids who actually learn and perform better when their preferences look very different from our own. The Learning Experience: Training Teachers Using Online Synchronous Environments, Stuart Woodcock Dr, Ashley Sisco Dr, Michelle Eady Dr

Journal of Educational Research and Practice

This study examined the effectiveness of an online synchronous platform used for training preservice teachers. A blended learning approach was implemented. Fifty-three students participated in the course. Qualitative interview data and quantitative survey data were collected about students’ experiences using the platform, and analyzed via thematic content analysis and statistical analysis, respectively. The findings show that e-learning synchronous technology is an effective learning tool in enhancing preservice teachers’ e-learning competency in subject matter and information communication technology skills. However, preservice teachers’ competency to learn and implement e-learning for students is dependent on four hierarchal conditions (a) ease of use, (b) …

To Apply Or Not To Apply: A Survey Analysis Of Grant Writing Costs And Benefits, Ted Von Hippel, Courtney Von Hippel Mar 2015

To Apply Or Not To Apply: A Survey Analysis Of Grant Writing Costs And Benefits, Ted Von Hippel, Courtney Von Hippel

Publications

We surveyed 113 astronomers and 82 psychologists active in applying for federally funded research on their grant-‐writing history between January, 2009 and November, 2012. We collected demographic data, effort levels, success rates, and perceived non-‐financial benefits from writing grant proposals. We find that the average proposal takes 116 PI hours and 55 CI hours to write; although time spent writing was not related to whether the grant was funded. Effort did translate into success, however, as academics who wrote more grants received more funding. Participants indicated modest non-‐monetary benefits from grant writing, with psychologists reporting a somewhat greater benefit overall …
