Using Solo Drama To Make The Teaching Of Social Studies Engaging For Students, Michael Kemeh Mar 2015

Using Solo Drama To Make The Teaching Of Social Studies Engaging For Students, Michael Kemeh

Faculty Scholarship

Social studies is a major subject taught in schools in the United States. Research shows lack of interest in the subject by most school children. The author reflects on how he prepares teachers in a graduate drama course to use solo drama as another instructional option to address the problem. The paper also examines integrated solo drama projects by four students in their respective classrooms as case studies. The findings are synthesized to demonstrate the efficacy of this drama strategy for classroom teachers and teacher educators to adopt in making social studies meaningful and engaging for learners.

Little Red Herrings:Charlie Hebdo And The Moral Equivalence Fallacy, Mark Y. Herring Mar 2015

Little Red Herrings:Charlie Hebdo And The Moral Equivalence Fallacy, Mark Y. Herring

Winthrop Faculty and Staff Publications

The tragedy of Charlie Hebdo in Paris kicked off what we hope is not a harbinger of 2015 things to come. The massacre by radical Muslims of some dozen employees of the satirical Paris magazine has set off a wave of newfound “freedom of expression” advocates. And so it should. While freedom of expression does not mean that one must accept what another says, it does vouchsafe the right to say it.

Contexts of the academic achievement and attainment levels were framed by the following four academic quality indicators outlined by the National Consensus Panel of the Charter School Quality Consortium in its 2008 report A Framework for Academic Quality: (1) student achievement as measured by standardized testing, (2) student growth over time as measured by annual and longitudinal gains, (3) postsecondary …
