The Center for Equity for English Learners (CEEL) at Loyola Marymount University collaborated with Camino Nuevo Charter Academy (CNCA) in a Research, Practice, Policy Partnership to investigate problems of practice and enhance literacy leaders’ focus on supporting classroom teachers to meet the needs of multilingual/English learners (ML/EL). The research question for this study focused on literacy leaders’ perceptions about how the revised Planning-Observation-Debrief (POD) cycle tools support teachers’ focus on scaffolding ML/ELs’ access to reading and writing complex text. This research and policy brief provides an overview of the Center for Equity for English Learner’s Superdiverse Adolescent Multilingual Learners Resource Guide. The publication follows the Global California 2030 call to recognize and promote the home languages and cultures of English Learners as valuable resources to increase multilingualism within the state. The term “Superdiverse” is used to acknowledge the many facets of diversity that make up the identities of English/Multilingual Learners in addition to the breadth of linguistic diversity encompassed within their language journeys. Leadership identity (also known as leader identity) has been established as a sub-identity of general self-concept. A greater degree of leadership identity could have implications for leadership self-efficacy. Research on leadership identity development in the last 20 years has mostly been quantitative with limited qualitative efforts. Exploring the leadership identity development of academic leaders remains mostly absent from the literature. Using the Leadership Identity Development Model, a descriptive qualitative study was conducted with cohort members of two national academic leadership development programs, the Food Systems Leadership Institute and LEAD21. The extend to which differences were present for Emergent Bilingual students and non-Emergent Bilingual students in their performance on the Texas state-mandated English I End-of-Course exam for the 2018-2019, 2020-2021, and 2021-2022 school years was examined. Specifically addressed was the extent to which Emergent Bilingual students and non-Emergent Bilingual students differed in their performance on three Grade Level performance standards: Approaches Grade Level standard, Meets Grade Level standard, and Masters Grade Level standard in the pre-pandemic year and the first and second-post-pandemic years. Creating A School Climate Of Belonging And Engagement Through Visionary Leadership And Student Art, Jeff Irvine, Kyra Kristensen-Irvine

This research adopted a case study methodology to investigate how student artwork helped establish a school climate that was intentionally inviting to students and the wider school community. Through the visionary leadership of two principals, a Kindergarten to Grade 5 school and a middle school enhanced their common areas through student visual arts projects. Previous research on school physical environments focused on safety, cleanliness, and noise levels. This paper addresses a research gap, identifying the role that physical environments played in promoting a positive school climate which in turn promoted students’ sense of belonging and engagement.

Algebra I End-Of-Course Exam Differences By The At-Risk Status Of Texas Hispanic Students: A Multiyear Statewide Investigation, Daniel Craft, John R. Slate

Journal of Educational Leadership in Action

Examined in this investigation was a comparison of the Algebra I End-of-Course exam performance between Hispanic students who were at-risk and Hispanic students who were not at-risk in the 2016-2017, 2017-2018, and 2018-2019 school years. Inferential statistical procedures yielded statistically significant differences in all three school years between these two groups of Hispanic students. In all three school years, higher percentages of Hispanic students who were at-risk did not meet the three grade level standards (i.e., Approaches Grade Level, Meets Grade Level, and Masters Grade Level) than Hispanic students who were not at-risk. This paper investigates the perspectives of three novice school leaders who explore ways to accommodate new instructional practices at their campuses by setting high expectations and getting to know students and their educational needs. The three novice school leaders who participated in this investigation emphasized the importance of communication and relationships with all the stakeholders, including: teachers, staff, students, parents, office personnel, and community members. Additionally, all three novice school leaders expressed gaining trust and proactively providing support to teachers at all times. This paper describes a survey study on the AI perspectives of pre-service teachers. The study included 115 participants who completed a survey to gather quantitative and qualitative data on their use and perceptions AI, as well as on ethical concerns surrounding its use. The conceptual framework guiding this work is the “Human – AI – Human” developed by the Washington Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (2024). This framework offered a lens that grounded ethical behavior through a human-guided perspective. This study found that pre-service teachers did not generally prefer to use AI and were concerned with its ethical implications. …

This is a story about Southeast Asian and Latino parents in Lowell, MA who confronted the Lowell School Committee in the late 1970s and 1980s, demanding that schools be desegregated and that their children have equal educational opportunities. While the school struggle unfolded, acts of anti-Asian and anti-Latino violence were perpetrated in Greater Boston and around the country, including the tragic death of Vandy Phorng, a 13-year-old Cambodian American in 1987. Following his death, the federal lawsuit that Southeast Asian and Latino parents had filed moved through the federal court for two years before the city settled. However, further racism …

This study explores the efficacy and challenges of interprofessional learning opportunities for preservice special education teachers and speech-language pathologists through a novel Interprofessional Summit. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the research examined how interdisciplinary collaboration impacts the preparation of these professionals for working with augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) communicators in inclusive settings. Data were collected from a small convenience sample of participants at a single university, focusing on the process rather than outcomes of interprofessional engagement. Background: Major depression places psychological strain on the individual that may increase the risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Though the use of Chinese herbal medicines (CHMs) is widespread in clinical practice, its effect on the prevention of RA incidents is still unknown. This study aimed to evaluate the association between CHMs use by patients with depression and their subsequent risk of being diagnosed with RA.

The Collaborative AI Open Educational Resource (OER) explores how artificial intelligence can act as a creative and analytical collaborator rather than a tool. Centered on the Balanced Blended Space (BBS) framework and the philosophy of the Center for Holistic Integration (CHI), the OER includes curriculum materials, theoretical models, and live research environments. It offers an interesting approach to blending physical, virtual, and conceptual spaces through shared human–AI agency and invites ongoing participation in interdisciplinary meta-projects.

More balanced understanding may curb unintended negative outcomes. While social mobility provides opportunities for a better life and societal progress, it can also lead to significant challenges, including burnout from hypercompetitive environments, feelings of isolation due to cultural mismatches, and self-blame stemming from the myth of meritocracy. Strengthening social safety nets and providing supportive environments in educational institutions and workplaces can help mitigate the unintended psychological and social costs of mobility. The Maine Career Exploration (MCE) Program was a two-year, $25 million pilot initiative launched in 2022 by Governor Janet Mills as part of the Maine Jobs and Recovery Plan. The program aimed to connect young people aged 16 to 24 with Maine’s economy through paid, age-appropriate career experiences that matched their interests, while also expanding career exploration opportunities in schools and communities and building long-term infrastructure to sustain these efforts. The medical fields of anesthesiology and otolaryngology (ENT – ears, nose, throat) are defined by overlapping clinical expertise as it relates to the management of airway issues. As a result of this shared clinical domain, interdisciplinary educational experiences provide an opportunity for collaboration and a broadened experience for resident physician learning. Our institution developed a two-week rotation in otolaryngology for first-year anesthesiology interns with the goal of utilizing interdisciplinary coaching to develop both technical and non-technical skills in airway management. The American school system is plagued by violent attacks such as school shootings. Unfortunately, these events are incredibly difficult to predict. The security used for these schools is often found lacking and students aren’t getting the help needed. Part of the issue is the internal struggle of students in tough situations and teachers not being trained properly to help them. School security is more than just something at the gate. It’s about creating a safe environment that students can find sanctuary in. The solution is to provide better training for teachers and updating the physical security of the school.
