Biblical Themes In Spanish Instruction, Adrienne J. Royo May 2025

Biblical Themes In Spanish Instruction, Adrienne J. Royo

The Journal of Biblical Foundations of Faith and Learning

This paper seeks to answer the question, when teaching Spanish, does one have to be in a certain venue to be able to share God and the Bible? Through exploration of legends, myths, traditions, Spanish proverbs, and names of geographical locations, as well as personal experiences, the question is answered, elucidating the fact that the sharing of God’s Word is not dependent upon the venue, it is centered in a sense of intentionality in seeking opportunities appropriate to the setting and the occasion. In a spiritual and physical sense, Psalm 19:1 (KJV) defines the world around us when David declares: …

Jesus’ Model Of Teaching With Relationship-Rich Techniques To Establish A Biblical Worldview, Cynthia Gettys Ph.D., Robert Overstreet Ph.D, Polina Kadatska May 2025

Jesus’ Model Of Teaching With Relationship-Rich Techniques To Establish A Biblical Worldview, Cynthia Gettys Ph.D., Robert Overstreet Ph.D, Polina Kadatska

The Journal of Biblical Foundations of Faith and Learning

The classroom, whether physical or virtual, is the primary point of contact between faculty-student and student-student. It is the single most important venue for students to experience the learning environment, build webs of relationships, and ask questions of meaning and purpose. One of the most important things faculty and staff can do is help university students build a diverse social network and develop a biblical worldview while they are at the university. An individual’s worldview affects all aspects of life, especially decisions related to professions and vocations. This paper emphasizes how to teach as Jesus did by including examples of …

The Communication And Public Speaking Course And Biblical Foundations – Interpersonal Encounters With The Creator, Victoria Joiner Edd May 2025

The Communication And Public Speaking Course And Biblical Foundations – Interpersonal Encounters With The Creator, Victoria Joiner Edd

The Journal of Biblical Foundations of Faith and Learning

Teaching COMM 135 Communication and Public Speaking from a biblical worldview is critical to the Southern University student body. This paper discusses various strategies to provide a biblical foundation in the course that has secular humanistic thought and philosophies at its core. This worldview is a seamless, often unconscious stream of biblical inclusion throughout the semester. Successfully integrating the basic biblical foundation principle of God’s interpersonal communication with humanity within Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) for the course is not only possible but essential within the biblical foundation paradigm. Wood’s (2016) eight axioms/principles of Interpersonal Communication provide a foundation upon which …

Leading The Way: Preparing School Psychologists In Postsecondary Transition Training, Kaiya Joy Dawson

Theses and Dissertations

Students with disabilities face significant challenges in achieving postsecondary success, yet training on postsecondary transition planning within school psychology graduate programs remains limited. A content analysis of 252 accredited school psychology programs in the United States revealed major gaps in transition training, with only 1.6% of programs covering all critical domains. Results indicated that 67% of programs include some transition training in at least one domain. Family engagement (42%) and program structure (30%) had the most training, then interagency collaboration (20%), student focused planning (3%) and student development (6%). Notably, programs with larger cohort sizes were correlated with more transition …

Integrating Community Assets, Place-Based Learning, And Career Development Through Project-Based Learning In Rural Settings, Denae Kizys, Christine Lotter Ph.D., Lucas Perez, Rachel Gilreath, Dodie Limberg

Faculty Publications

Our study investigates the first year of a two-year place-based education (PBE) professional development model that focuses on career development in rural middle schools through project-based learning (PBL) units. Rural science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) educators face unique challenges, including geographic isolation, limited resources, and reduced access to professional development opportunities, which can hinder the effective integration of career-oriented learning in the classroom. We addressed these challenges by implementing professional development in which school counselors and teachers collaborate to design PBL units aligned with rural community local needs and STEM careers. Using a descriptive multiple-case study methodology to document …

Assessment Of Graduate Admission Requirements Aimed At Predicting Student Outcomes, William Pratt, Robert Greve, Michael Williams, Suye Wang, Evan Shough

International Journal for Business Education

The purpose of this study is to measure the appropriateness of the existing admissions requirements as related to the likelihood of graduation. We employ a five-year sample of students admitted into the graduate program and selected a cutoff date to allow sufficient time for most of each cohort to complete their studies. Following the general structure of Pratt (2015) this study assesses the appropriateness of criteria employed to evaluate graduate program applicants. The findings of our study demonstrate that undergraduate performance, GPA, and work experience can provide sufficient information for qualifying candidates into a graduate business program. Furthermore, our findings …

Engaging Undergraduate Students In Critical Visual Reflections Using Their Visual Journals, Madeleine A. Barney-Gibbs

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This qualitative, arts-based study examines how undergraduate students engage with visual journaling to construct and articulate knowledge in a social science course centering issues of diversity, inclusion, and social justice. Drawing on Freirian critical pedagogy and critical visual reflection, this research centers students’ voices and creative processes. Through one-time, audio-recorded interviews, participants share insights about their journaling experiences, reflect on memorable pages, and articulate both the significance and intended future use of their visual journals. The collaboration between researchers and student participants involves shared reflective practices, flattening hierarchies, and emphasizing embodied expression, including nonverbal and vocal cues. This approach builds …

Setting Up Students For Success: Analysis Of Effectiveness Of Mathematics Placement, Jeff Carvell, Jason Ho, David Klanderman, Sarah Klanderman

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

How do we e!ectively and equitably place students into math classes in a way that provides them the best chance of success? As many higher education institutions veer away from placement based on standardized testing, many departments are seeking placement alternatives that will properly support students. Additionally, math placement determines not only a student’s mathematics courses but also influences their progress in related fields, including physics, chemistry, engineering, and more. This paper will describe three di!erent existing placement systems at each of our liberal arts institutions as well as the a!ordances and constraints of each approach. Further, we analyze data …

A Seat At The Schoolhouse Table: Reimagining Education Through Afrofuturist And Womanist Theory, Natasha M. Capers May 2025

A Seat At The Schoolhouse Table: Reimagining Education Through Afrofuturist And Womanist Theory, Natasha M. Capers

Student Theses

“A Seat at the Schoolhouse Table: Reimagining Education Through Afrofuturist and Womanist Theory” critically examines how curriculum, even when well-intentioned, can perpetuate harm by excluding the lived experiences of marginalized communities—especially Black, Indigenous, and LGBTQIA+ students. Using a real middle school immigration assignment given to the author's son as a case study, this capstone deconstructs the structural biases embedded in curriculum design and proposes a radical reimagining through the liberatory lenses of Afrofuturism and Womanism. Blending scholarly inquiry, personal narrative, and community-based interviews, this project offers a restructured assignment that centers joy, identity, and speculative storytelling as tools for educational …

Early Childhood Teachers’ Perspectives On The Challenges Of Closing The African American Achievement Gap, Cherie Mcelroy-Burch

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

There is a persistent academic achievement gap between African American students and their White peers in Grades 1–3. Federal and state governments have made numerous efforts, implemented policy changes, and allocated more resources to struggling school districts, yet the disparity in academic achievement persists. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore early childhood teachers’ perspectives on the challenges of closing the achievement gap between African American students and their White peers in Grades 1–3. The conceptual framework for this study was based on Coll and Lamberty’s model of developmental competencies in minority children. The research question for …

Leading Through Crisis: San Diego County Schools' Response To The Social Emotional Needs Of All Students, Johana Bielma May 2025

Leading Through Crisis: San Diego County Schools' Response To The Social Emotional Needs Of All Students, Johana Bielma

Dissertations

The COVID-19 pandemic led to unprecedented school closures, forcing administrators to take decisive action to radically change the educational system. The imperative to switch to remote learning transformed the dynamics of teaching and learning, leading to both immediate and long-term academic and social emotional consequences for all stakeholders. When schools reopened, administrators faced the challenge of reintegrating students into in-person learning while addressing the pandemic’s lasting effects on academics, mental health, and school safety. While academic regression was evident, the extent of students’ emotional struggles was less anticipated. Many students exhibited increased irritability and mental health issues such as depression …

Reimagining Pedagogies Of The Prison Yard: Using Ethnotheatre To Embody Transcarceral Conocimiento, Mabelle Reynoso

Dissertations

Latinxs make up 40% of California's population but account for 45% of the prison population and 47% of the jail population (Sawyer, 2023). Their overrepresentation in carceral custody not only impacts the individual but also affects families and communities by limiting access to social, political, and educational capital and agency. In response to gaps in research specific to the collateral impact, this interdisciplinary arts-based qualitative study highlights the experiences of five formerly incarcerated Latino men who participated in an Arts in Corrections playwriting class during their time in a California state prison. This study foregrounds their knowledge as cuentistas (storytellers), …

How We Show Up Matters: Transformative Adult Social Emotional Learning To Build Equity-Centered Schools, Samantha L. Rummage-Massey May 2025

How We Show Up Matters: Transformative Adult Social Emotional Learning To Build Equity-Centered Schools, Samantha L. Rummage-Massey

Dissertations

Transformative Social Emotional Learning (tSEL) expands traditional SEL by integrating equity and social justice to cultivate student development and as a framework for educator growth and systemic change in education (Jagers et al., 2019). Unlike traditional SEL, which primarily targets students, tSEL emphasizes educators’ role in disrupting inequitable practices, making it a powerful tool for reimagining schools as justice-oriented spaces. This qualitative case study explores how tSEL professional development influences educators’ sense of identity, agency, and belonging, along with their reflections on systemic inequities and application of Critical Pedagogy (Freire, 1970) in personal and professional contexts. Data collection included semi-structured …

Understanding And Engaging In Equity Work: A Phenomenological Action Research Study Of Community College Esol Instructors, Emily E. Packer May 2025

Understanding And Engaging In Equity Work: A Phenomenological Action Research Study Of Community College Esol Instructors, Emily E. Packer

Dissertations

Community colleges (CCs) are regarded as accessible and affordable pathways to higher education and financial mobility, offering significant potential to promote educational equity (Fink et al., 2023). These institutions enroll the largest number of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) students in adult education; however, CC ESOL students face lower rates of degree completion and transfer compared to their non-ESOL peers (David & Kanno, 2021; Fink et al., 2023; Raufman et al., 2019). While research has examined factors contributing to low CC ESOL student persistence and interventions to improve overall CC student outcomes, research on specific efforts to support …

Liberatory Love: Exploring Educators’ Perspectives In Alternative Education, Kamala J. Mallipudi May 2025

Liberatory Love: Exploring Educators’ Perspectives In Alternative Education, Kamala J. Mallipudi

Dissertations

Establishing an operational understanding of love is difficult. The struggle is magnified when attempting to create a shared vision of love across a group of educators. As Freire (1970/2005) and Darder (2011) affirmed, academic success is advanced when educators demonstrate love as part of their praxis. Continuation high schools represent a population of at-promise students who stand to gain much when their educators employ liberatory love practices. This study examined how educators’ perceptions about liberatory love are shifted or formed when they read, discuss, and reflect on the topic with their colleagues. This study drew on critical pedagogy and engaged …

Belonging Is Resistance: Illuminating The Power Of Women Of Color Mid-Level Administrators In Higher Education, Rachelle Ann Martinez May 2025

Belonging Is Resistance: Illuminating The Power Of Women Of Color Mid-Level Administrators In Higher Education, Rachelle Ann Martinez

Dissertations

Resistance has long been a mechanism through which the dominant norms of society are challenged in the name of social justice. White supremacy, heteropatriarchy, and neoliberalism make it difficult for institutions of higher education to increase diversity, advance equity, and prioritize inclusion. Although these systems of domination adversely impact the belonging of all campus stakeholders, the experiences of mid-level administrators are relatively overlooked, and feeling undervalued and underappreciated is a top reason for many, especially women and people of color, who leave the profession altogether. This qualitative study utilized narrative inquiry to understand how dominant societal norms adversely impact the …

Latinas In Higher Education: Paving & Weaving Wholeheartedly, Ariela M. Canizal May 2025

Latinas In Higher Education: Paving & Weaving Wholeheartedly, Ariela M. Canizal

Dissertations

The deficit model in research has often framed Latinas in higher education through a lens of barriers and challenges, reinforcing stereotypes that depict them as unlikely to succeed in academic spaces. However, Latinas are actively resisting these narratives, weaving their resilience into their stories as they navigate the complexities of higher education, culture, and identity. This study examines how Latina students incorporate cultural background, familial support, and personal agency to thrive academically while challenging systemic obstacles and societal expectations. The research question that guided this study is: In what ways do undergraduate Latina students navigate identity as they experience leadership …

Post Racial Reckoning: Montessori Instructors' Perspectives On Teaching Through An Antibias Antiracist Lens, Jasmine E. Williams May 2025

Post Racial Reckoning: Montessori Instructors' Perspectives On Teaching Through An Antibias Antiracist Lens, Jasmine E. Williams

Dissertations

Prior to the racial reckoning of 2020, Montessori teacher education programs (MTEPs) have only narrowly focused on social justice education (Aronson et al., 2020; Bartolomè, 2004; Cook, 2015; Cross, 2005; D’Cruz, 2022; King, 1991). Although MTEPs began to respond differently post-reckoning, support for implementing practices like antibias antiracist (ABAR) instruction was often absent. This study sought to understand how the racial reckoning and efforts to include an ABAR lens impacted the teaching practices of instructors in MTEPs. While ABAR-related studies exist in general teacher education (Blanchard et al., 2018; Madkins & Nazar, 2022; Martinez-Alba, Herrera, & Hersi, 2022), few focus …

Hire Outcomes: The African American Educator Experience Of Equity And Diversity In Education, Myeshia Whigham May 2025

Hire Outcomes: The African American Educator Experience Of Equity And Diversity In Education, Myeshia Whigham

Dissertations

African American educators have remained significantly underrepresented in U.S. public schools, a reality shaped by systemic racism, exclusionary hiring practices, and the dominance of white cultural norms in education (Anderson, 1988; Farinde-Wu et al., 2020; Fenwick, 2022). These barriers include microaggressions, anti-Blackness, and limited institutional support (Campbell, 2022; Crenshaw, 1994; Ingersoll et al., 2019; Ladson-Billings, 2021a). Despite these challenges, African American educators bring and practice culturally relevant pedagogy, an approach that affirms students’ cultural identities and creates a stronger sense of belonging for educators and students of color (Ladson-Billings, 2021a; Love, 2019a; Paris & Alim, 2017). The purpose of this …
