Between the rising cost of education and the oft-mentioned skills gap, current and potential students are pursuing alternatives to expensive 4-year degrees. This has contributed to the rapid rise of alternative credentials over the past 10 years. However, these alternatives still struggle with public awareness, questions of validity, and familiarity and acceptance by employers. This dissertation focuses on understanding the research surrounding alternative credentials and specifically looks at whether those credentials have perceived or actual value for gaining or improving an individual's career. Evolution is the cornerstone for understanding biology, yet it is one of the more misunderstood topics. Objective: The present study describes the development of the Indiana Prison Writers Workshop (IPWW), a creative writing workshop, based in group theory and designed for incarcerated settings. Methods: Quantitative evaluation data from IPWW workshops conducted from 2023-2024 were analyzed using IBM SPSS V. 29. Prior to the workshop, 149 men responded to questions on class expectations and goals, and 115 men responded at workshop conclusion. Open-ended qualitative responses from post-workshop data were analyzed using thematic analysis. Results: Quantitative data demonstrates the effectiveness of IPWW in teaching writing skills and reflects participants’ agreement that the workshops provide opportunities to share their …

Persistent disparities in educational outcomes for minority students in the United States are deeply rooted in historical injustices and systemic racism, particularly when it comes to resource allocation.This project focused on public school funding, reliant on local property taxes, creates structural imbalances that benefit affluent, predominantly white districts while underfunding minority schools. Additionally, these schools often face a shortage of certified, experienced teachers due to lower salaries, inadequate support, and challenging working conditions. Students in these under-resourced settings also lack access to advanced coursework, STEM programs, and essential learning materials, further widening the achievement gap. This project explores the significance of Outdoor Orientation Programs (OOPs) in aiding the successful transition of first-year students into higher education. Despite the recognized challenges faced by students during this transition, including academic, social, and personal adjustments, many institutions lack adequate support systems. Drawing on Schlossberg’s Transition Theory and existing literature, this study advocates for the adoption and implementation of OOPs as transformative interventions with providing a model OOP that institutions can utilize. Território Brincapé (TB) - Community Space for Free Play was a seminal project in Lisbon designed to deliver weekly play sessions to 112 children between 6 and 10 years old, for 1.5 hours during school time, at a private sandpit just outside a school. TB was developed under the ethos of playwork practice and was conceptualised as an adventure playground. One teacher's reflection on the professional development afforded by Reading Recovery coursework received thirty years ago in comparison to current explicit training in Science of Reading leads to conclusions about teacher training practices. The paper suggests not only is explicit foundational reading instruction essential for all new teachers, but continued investment at the school level improves the capacity of the district to meet the needs of students, including struggling readers, while also retaining future educators.

Distracting thoughts can disrupt learning. While some interrupting thoughts are helpful or relevant to the activity, others interfere with learning. Some students find it challenging to put aside distracting thoughts to concentrate on their studies. I invented a strategy to support executive functioning skill development and assist students in setting aside distracting thoughts so they can focus. This quantitative, correlational study examines whether the number of adverse childhood experiences can predict a special education diagnosis of emotional disturbance. Emotional disturbance is one of the 13 disability categories included in the Individuals with Disabilities Act. More than 335,000 students in the United States are diagnosed with emotional disturbance.
