This study explored the experiences of three Black women navigating dual roles as graduate students and instructors at a predominantly white institution (PWI). Their narratives revealed persistent challenges like implicit bias, racism, microaggressions, and limited opportunities, reflecting broader systemic issues that impact Black students in similar environments. Despite these adversities, the women demonstrated notable resilience. The findings emphasize the importance of creating policies and practices that foster inclusivity and support for marginalized communities within academic settings. By highlighting both personal and systemic barriers, this research contributes to understanding the complexities of Black women’s experiences at PWIs.

Academic tracking segregates students based on perceived ability. Because of the nation’s exclusionary history, Black students are often unfairly judged and disproportionately placed in lower tracks. By viewing academic tracking through Patricia Hill Collins’s concept of the “ matrix of domination, ” this study brings attention to normalized deep-seated biases and structural discriminatory practices. Yet amidst this complex web of oppression is the potential for education to be a political weapon that equips students to oppose and disrupt hegemonic state-sanctioned violence. This track centers the spaces I co-create that attend to my overall well-being as a Black woman educator making demands for Black student well-being and educational justice. Situated within higher education, this study accounts for the current realities of anti-Blackness within academia while creating spaces that support Black students ’ well-being. It builds on literature that advances abolitionist and fugitive praxes and emphasizes radical self-care for Black women in academia. This research uses autoethnography and concepts from Black critical theory, school abolition, and engaged pedagogy. The findings highlight one model of a Black abolitionist pedagogy.

Missing within educational research on theory, pedagogy, and teaching are unifying frameworks created by Black people for Black people that cohesively combine applicable ways to explicitly (re)center Black people's historical, educational, ideological, cultural, and spiritual ways of being. Paralleling Dumas and ross’s (2016) theorized Black critical theory (BlackCrit) in education, I endarken (Dillard, 2006) and carry on the tradition to address the specificity of antiblackness and better understand the anti-Black schooling experiences of Black scholars by theorizing a Black-Brilliance Praxis framework. In this ceremony (offering), I reflect on the life lessons of my uncle, Louis Williams, who taught me about labor, resilience, and the beauty of letting go. From the patience needed to build a home to the wisdom of choosing the right tools, his lessons reach beyond practicality—they offer a framework for life, learning, and especially, death. As a recovering academic and death doula, I examine how we can mourn dead structures and ways of being, like schooling, to truly honor our sacredness. Through these reflections, I explore what it means to build toward remembered futures.

Within the context of victims and violence, this study serves multiple purposes: (1) to explore the impact of pet ownership on children and adolescents within the context of bullying and school violence; (2) to document the impact of therapy animals on domestic violence victims; (3) to document the impact of working canines in courts on domestic violence victims. This research examines how political forces shaping K-12 education in Arkansas connect to broader global political trends. The station learning technique is more effective than traditional teaching methods regarding academic achievement and student engagement. However, stations are not a typical method high school teachers use when teaching sight-reading in a choir classroom. This study investigated the implementation of the station learning technique in a high school choir setting. The participants were a single classroom of 17 students and two teachers. The data collection tools included student self-assessments, skill assessments, sight-reading rubrics, student and teacher surveys, and student and teacher focus group interviews. This perspective article explores the integration of positive psychology interventions (PPIs) and spirituality in therapy to foster meaning and well-being in older adults. It highlights exercises such as the positive introduction, positive legacy, character strengths, mindfulness, mindful-based yoga, and a manifestation prayer journaling. The interventions presented are tools to support older adults that may experience depression, difficult life transitions, and the search for renewed meaning. Therapists who integrate PPIs and spirituality into therapy can promote a holistic, non-pathological approach to treatment.

Incentives, which are a behavior management tool, have long existed in education as a way to motivate students to display targeted behaviors and achieve academic goals. This action research study, which was conducted in a first-grade classroom, had the purpose of understanding students’ and the teacher’s perceptions of incentives in the classroom. Through collecting surveys, interviewing the students and the classroom teacher, taking field notes, and collecting artifacts, qualitative data was analyzed to find common themes that emerged, while quantitative data from the surveys was calculated to find the mean. This research examines a reading instruction model that combined reader’s workshop and literature circles. The study aimed to determine whether a combined instructional model, here labeled as reader’s circle, would be effective and what student perceptions toward this model would be. Research was conducted within an eighth-grade Reading and Language Arts classroom for three weeks, throughout which the combined instructional model was implemented. This study analyzed pre- and post-intervention test results alongside post-intervention surveys, classroom observations, and individual interviews. It aimed to evaluate the role and influence of a designated student leader in a secondary choral program through perceptions from student leaders, student members, and directors. Quantitative reasoning is a critical skill in biology and has been highlighted as a core competency by Vision and Change. Despite its importance, students often struggle to apply mathematical skills in new contexts in biology, a process called transfer of knowledge. However, the supports and barriers that students perceive for this process remain unclear. To explore this further, we interviewed undergraduate students in an introductory biology lab course about how they understand and report the transfer of quantitative skills in these courses. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to understand the perceptions and experiences of department chairs and full-time faculty with organizational communication during a time of organizational transition post COVID-19. Utilizing the conceptual framework of communication satisfaction developed by Downs and Hazen (1977), the study used semi-structured interviews and a thematic analysis of pandemic communications. Findings indicated that engagement, transparency, and clarity were essential in creating positive perceptions of communication with department chairs playing a critical role between upper-level administration and faculty. This study explored fourth-grade students’ and their teacher’s perceptions of learning contracts in a math classroom, as well as their potential impact on assessment scores. Over four weeks, students alternated between using and not using contracts. During week three, participants completed a survey of Likert scale and open-ended questions; select students and the teacher were then interviewed. Field notes were taken weekly. Initial data was coded with level 1 codes, followed by level 2 codes derived from the first round. Themes were developed through indexing and analytical memos.
