Racial Ideology And Black Students’ Leadership Experiences At A Historically White Institution, Rechard Peel May 2017

Racial Ideology And Black Students’ Leadership Experiences At A Historically White Institution, Rechard Peel

Masters Theses

The purpose of the present study is to understand the relationship between racial ideology and leadership experiences of Black student leaders at a historically White institution (HWI). Using a phenomenological approach, the study seeks to delineate the experiences of Black students as it relates to their leadership and racial identity. Using the Multidimensional Inventory of Black Identity (MIBI); (Sellers et al., 1997) and one-on-one semi-structured interviews, data was collected from Black undergraduate students at a midsized HWI who were classified as juniors or above and who participated in one or more student organizations or campus activities in a leadership capacity. …

Fluency Development And Young Readers, Elizabeth Jenkins Diamant

Theses and Dissertations

The study investigated the effects of integrating explicit fluency instruction in the dimensions of: accuracy, rate, expression, and punctuation. Eight elementary students in second, third and fifth grades who received Response to Intervention services for reading and each group met four times a week for forty-five minutes participated. The district used the STAR evaluation system to establish the groups. After the lessons, participants recorded a reading of their instructional level text and completed a rubric to score their performance in each of the four dimensions: punctuation, expression, rate and accuracy. Later, I listened to the same recording and scored each …

Private Colleges Can Partner To Solve Issues., Aldemaro Romero Jr. May 2017

Private Colleges Can Partner To Solve Issues., Aldemaro Romero Jr.

Publications and Research

One of the discussions around accessibility, cost, and quality in higher education revolves about private colleges and universities. Are they for rich kids only? Do they graduate students at a higher rate than do public institutions? Are they more efficient at managing their money? Can they save taxpayers money? And, more importantly, is there a place for them in the future of higher education? These and other questions have been around for a while and a study recently published on these issues provides us with some of the answers.

These and other questions are particularly relevant, especially in states that …

Csr As Insurance: Investigating The Theory With Emotional Data, Nathaniel S. Gates, David G. Kryscynski May 2017

Csr As Insurance: Investigating The Theory With Emotional Data, Nathaniel S. Gates, David G. Kryscynski

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The purpose of this project was to investigate the impact of emotional data on strategy theory, and explore the potential of using natural language processing to obtain meaningful insights from the emotional content of written text. The theory of CSR as Insurance, which relates a company’s level of corporate social responsibility (CSR) with how they are viewed by stockholders, was chosen because it is an inherently emotional theory. It holds that companies with a strong reputation for socially responsible activities are less likely to be penalized by stakeholders after a negative event—such as a corporate scandal, lawsuit, or major accident—than …

How Teachers Use Beliefs And Knowledge In Changing Contexts: A Multi-Site Ethnographic Study With Nicaraguan Multigrade Elementary School Teachers, Tenley M. Ruth

Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs

This ethngoraphic study investigates how multigrade elementary school teachers in the central-northern mountains of Nicaragua developed and used shared societal, institutional and individual belief systems and knowledge to both understand and decide if, how, when and with whom to act upon the government’s values education curriculum and mandates. To understand teacher use of overlapping beliefs systems, the research provided parallel ethnographic accounts of teachers’, parents’ and government officials’ interpretations and actions regarding values education. The findings suggest that teachers used a wide panorama of overlapping and often contradictory beliefs systems in addition to beliefs about teaching and learning in general …

Confronting And Understanding Factors Of Teacher Turnover: A Deep-Rooted Phenomenon Employing An Autoethnographic Perspective, Elizabeth G. Hill May 2017

Confronting And Understanding Factors Of Teacher Turnover: A Deep-Rooted Phenomenon Employing An Autoethnographic Perspective, Elizabeth G. Hill

Doctor of Education in Elementary and Early Childhood Education Dissertations

This qualitative autoethnographic study explores the phenomenon of teacher turnover as it relates to the researcher’s specific contexts and personal experiences. Through the acts of journaling, coaching, and narrative writing, teachers can better understand influences of culture on their beliefs, values, attitudes, and decisions – especially in regards to actions of movement from one setting to another. The findings indicate that beliefs, values, attitudes, and decisions are learned through a school’s culture, and they can change depending on perspective. The findings also indicate that there is power in dialogue – even for teachers who never felt they had influence or …

Effective Note Taking Strategies In The Secondary Mathematics Classroom, Stefannie M. Asselanis

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

Note taking is an essential part for student success in the classroom. Students that struggle recording notes benefit from having a note taking method with a set format or design. The Cornell method, guided notes, and graphic organizers are all structured note taking methods that each have their own benefits. This quantitative research study focuses on whether the Cornell method, guided notes, or graphic organizers are effective in a secondary mathematics classroom based on students’ academic achievement.
