Did You Get The Message?: Influence Of Study Abroad Marketing To Prospective Students In Maryville College Study Abroad Demographics, Alissa M. Morson
Capstone Collection
Despite the increased institutional marketing and outreach to students on study abroad benefits and the visibility of successful returned students, long-term and short-term study abroad program interest has not grown past 25% of each graduating class at Maryville College – a small, liberal arts institution in Maryville, Tennessee. To better understand how early exposure to study abroad information may influence students’ decisions to go abroad at Maryville College, I examined college promotional materials, admissions staff practices and study abroad perceptions, as well as students’ memories of study abroad marketing during their prospective phase and their decision-making process. The findings suggest …

“Transformational Leadership for Growth in Changing Times” is a personal exploration into a leadership style that is both humanizing and effective. As a parent, artist, teacher, and counselor I have developed a personal form of leading without understanding what I was doing. After researching leadership styles I discovered that what I had been doing was backed by a recognized theory of leadership called Transformational Leadership.
The keys to Transformational Leadership include: Idealized Influence. Leaders behave as role models demonstrating high ethical standards and moral conduct. They are consistent and provide a feeling of confidence that obstacles can be overcome. The …

This synthesis paper presents an autobiographical narrative of my journey as a learner from a poor rural background in Thailand to completing a Masters program in the USA. I describe obstacles and problems at different times in my life — elementary school, high school, college, work, coming over to America, attending an ESL school, earning an Early Childhood Education certificate, and studying in the Critical and Creative Thinking Program. In overcoming obstacles I show myself to be a resolute person. Lessons that I share with readers include grades are not everything, memorizing is not an effective way to learn, meditation …

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection
I started the CCT program while also beginning a new role as a Dropout Recovery Specialist, working in partnership with a local school district. I work with students who have dropped out or are at risk of dropping out explore alternative options to finish their high school diploma or an equivalent. As the newest member of the center, the transition into a new organization created an internal struggle in finding my place. I was also seeing opportunities to improve current routines and practices as demands from district partners were increasing. Overwhelmed by the challenges before me, I was struggling to …

The Nobel Prize is one measure of a country’s intellectual prowess. Whether it is in the sciences, literature or economics, to win one is always a point of pride, not only for the winners but also for their country of citizenship. Since the first Nobel Prize was awarded in 1901, 860 individuals from 76 countries have won it. Of these, 363 have been from the United States. More Nobel Prize winners have been American than any other nationality.
And of the 363 American awardees, 98 were born in other countries. Of the six Americans awarded Nobel Prizes last year in …

Interdisciplinary Arts As An Agent For Community Building In A U.S. Public School, Ida Pappas
Interdisciplinary Arts As An Agent For Community Building In A U.S. Public School, Ida Pappas
Educational Studies Dissertations
The aim of my dissertation research is to understand the relationship between interdisciplinary arts experiences and the establishment of a community culture in a mainstream public high school in northeast United States. With this research, I hope to provide evidence to support the inclusion of interdisciplinary arts projects in the fabric of students’ high school curricular and extra-curricular experiences. Through engagement in design, art, video, music, dance, theater and the close study of a minority culture, high school participants provided regular responses to planned survey questions and open-ended survey questions (Experience Sampling), as well as through interviews, written prompts and …

The Qualitative Report
Researchers often focus on the content of their research interests but, depending on the research approach, may pay less attention to the process of locating themselves in relation to the research topic. This paper outlines the dialogue between an interdisciplinary team of researchers who were at the initial stages of forming a research agenda related to weight bias and social justice. Using a polyethnographic approach to guide our discussion, we sought to explore the diverse and common life experiences that influenced our professional interests for pursuing research on weight bias. As a dialogic method, polyethnography is ideally suited for the …

Note-Taking Support: Giving More Power To The Student, David Tucker
Note-Taking Support: Giving More Power To The Student, David Tucker
Southeast Regional AHEAD Conference
Abruptly, from a nearby spot a voice speaks...
“Studies into effective note-taking strategies all concur that students should independently CAPTURE, ORGANIZE, and TRANSFORM their notes.
“This research is not to be taken lightly! Support professionals: ask yourself whether they cast doubt on the value of traditional forms of note-taking support! Shouldn’t ALL students be given the POWER! to take notes for themselves?”
Moments later… strange diagrams on a projector screen highlight the connection between effective note-taking strategies and the mysterious science of memory.
The voice again.
“Doubtless, the very act of taking notes is key to understanding and remembering new …
