Interdisciplinary Arts As An Agent For Community Building In A U.S. Public School, Ida Pappas May 2017

Interdisciplinary Arts As An Agent For Community Building In A U.S. Public School, Ida Pappas

Educational Studies Dissertations

The aim of my dissertation research is to understand the relationship between interdisciplinary arts experiences and the establishment of a community culture in a mainstream public high school in northeast United States. With this research, I hope to provide evidence to support the inclusion of interdisciplinary arts projects in the fabric of students’ high school curricular and extra-curricular experiences. Through engagement in design, art, video, music, dance, theater and the close study of a minority culture, high school participants provided regular responses to planned survey questions and open-ended survey questions (Experience Sampling), as well as through interviews, written prompts and …

Employing Polyethnography To Navigate Researcher Positionality On Weight Bias, Nancy Arthur, Darren E. Lund, Shelly Russell-Mayhew, Sarah Nutter, Emily Williams, Monica Sesma Vazquez, Anusha Kassan

The Qualitative Report

Researchers often focus on the content of their research interests but, depending on the research approach, may pay less attention to the process of locating themselves in relation to the research topic. This paper outlines the dialogue between an interdisciplinary team of researchers who were at the initial stages of forming a research agenda related to weight bias and social justice. Using a polyethnographic approach to guide our discussion, we sought to explore the diverse and common life experiences that influenced our professional interests for pursuing research on weight bias. As a dialogic method, polyethnography is ideally suited for the …

Note-Taking Support: Giving More Power To The Student, David Tucker May 2017

Note-Taking Support: Giving More Power To The Student, David Tucker

Southeast Regional AHEAD Conference

Abruptly, from a nearby spot a voice speaks...

“Studies into effective note-taking strategies all concur that students should independently CAPTURE, ORGANIZE, and TRANSFORM their notes.

“This research is not to be taken lightly! Support professionals: ask yourself whether they cast doubt on the value of traditional forms of note-taking support! Shouldn’t ALL students be given the POWER! to take notes for themselves?”

Moments later… strange diagrams on a projector screen highlight the connection between effective note-taking strategies and the mysterious science of memory.

The voice again.

“Doubtless, the very act of taking notes is key to understanding and remembering new …

Building Social Justice Awareness Through The Curriculum: Teaching A Crash Course In Disability Studies, Beth Ann Bryant- Richards

Southeast Regional AHEAD Conference

This session will highlight my experience teaching a sophomore seminar course about the rhetoric of disability. Each seminar had to have a focus in multiculturalism in the United States, and many of the established courses focused on issues of race, gender, ethnic, and religious identity. Mine was the first course in the offerings that treated ability level as a component of multiculturalism or diversity. I will discuss the structure of the course, explain course readings and student activities and assignments. I will also provide some feedback that I received from students. After the presentation about the details of the course, …
