As artificial intelligence transforms the educational landscape, generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools have become influential in enhancing learning experiences. Despite their growing presence in higher education, limited research explores how university students, especially learners in non-Western contexts, perceive these tools. This study investigates students' perceptions at a university in the UAE, focusing on five dimensions: perceived benefits, institutional support, technological self-efficacy, ethical considerations and user satisfaction. The findings reveal that students generally expressed strong agreement regarding the benefits of GenAI, demonstrated a clear sense of ethical awareness and felt confident in their technological abilities. Germanium (Ge) samples with different doping types, acceptors (p-type) and donors (n-type), were studied to investigate charge carrier behavior. Carrier concentrations were found to be 1.16×10^21 m^(-3) for the p-type sample and 7.337×10^20 m^(-3) for the n-type sample. These experiments were conducted for the standard Hall effect (Hall voltage versus low magnetic field (B) values) as well as conductivity and Hall voltage versus temperature for different B-fields. The measurements versus temperature at zero-field allow us to obtain band gap ( Eg). While we investigate the conductivities for n-type and p-type doped samples, we also study the conductivity of an undoped …

Education And Fertility: Evidence From An Instrumental Variable Approach Using Higher Education Expansions In Turkey, Badi H. Baltagi, Haci M. Karatas

Center for Policy Research

This paper examines the impact of higher education on women’s fertility behavior in Turkey. To address the endogeneity of education we use the plausibly exogenous variation in college availability in Turkey between 1983 and 2000. We find that increased education of women in Turkey significantly reduced the number of children and increased the probability of childlessness at the end of the fecund period. The effect of education on fertility worked through a postponement in first births at ages following college graduation until the age of 35, an improvement in women’s labor market outcomes, better marriage market outcomes, and use of …

This exploratory study investigates international graduate students’ experiences studying in the US during the years of the Trump Administration, its influence on their mental health, and how their experiences have been different since. We surveyed international graduate students at a large public research institution in the Southeastern US who started their degrees in the US between 2017 and 2020, using a mixed-methods approach. The findings reveal that students had a negative perception of Trump Administration policies and rhetoric and were most negatively affected by those relating to visa status during the pandemic, travel bans, and student work authorization (OPT, CPT). …

This auto-ethnographic inquiry utilizes autobiographical narrative to delve into my experiences and narratives as a cross-cultural educator simultaneously teaching at a Chinese and Canadian university. The aim is to ponder the interconnections, differences, and challenges within formal cross-cultural curriculum design and pedagogy, informal curriculum, and hidden curriculum and engage with academic environments and broader communities. This qualitative comparative case study examined the lived experiences of building- and district-level administrators in a single New Jersey school district as they navigated the unprecedented challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. The study explored how administrators perceived and responded to disruptions, how responses evolved over time, lessons learned, and the ways these insights are being applied in schools today. Data were collected from demographic and technology surveys, two rounds of semi-structured interviews, and a targeted review of district documents. Our ever-evolving societies have faced a myriad of changes in a relatively short span of time. From a heavy focus on globalization to its undesired effects in education across the Global South, from migratory movements, shifting political and ideological landscapes to technological innovations, the impacts on how our students learn and engage with the world has also been in flux. Considering these complexities, this chapter highlights the urgent need for alternative practices and perspectives in language education, and for adaptation in light of the context specific contingencies that teachers and learners face.

Teacher Educators’ Languaging For More Just English Language Education In Ecuador, Adeline De Angelis

This article describes how English language teacher educators in Ecuador envision their languaging practices contributing to more just English language education in a Global South context. The study took a capabilities approach informed by Latin American decolonial theory. Findings are based on a qualitative thematic analysis of focus group interviews conducted with 37 instructors teaching English language teacher education content courses at 18 universities. The findings illustrate two distinct theories of change: through best practices and through contextualization. Required to learn English, Black, Indigenous, Migrant and Rural Colombian university students often find themselves oppressed by a colonial curriculum that overlooks their intersecting marginalized identities. Drawing from decoloniality and intersectionality, this paper discusses how coloniality and students’ plethora of identities converge in the English classroom and engage in a dance of oppression and resistance. In Colombia, foreign-language evaluation validity appears to be mainly related to the analysis of instruments, leaving aside students’ characteristics, affective schemata and expectations. Drawing from critical pedagogy, this study aimed at raising authenticity and meaningfulness in the development of valid foreign-language assessments in a higher education classroom. Framed in the sociocultural perspective, the teacher/researcher and her students obtained substantial gains by adapting a syllabus and evaluation system to better respond to the needs of their context. This study examined the micro-level support areas for international students at a higher education institution (polytechnic) in Canada to determine their perceived academic success using the Bronfenbrenner theory of human development at the micro-level. A quantitative study was conducted to measure the impact of micro-level support areas on international student’s perceived academic success. A target sample of 399 international students was recruited to participate in a hard copy, one on one survey in the 2019 winter semester. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui: seberapa besar pengaruh pelatihan guru, kompetensi guru, serta budaya organisasi terhadap keunggulan bersaing berkelanjutan di Madrasah Aliyah Negeri Kabupaten Sleman Yogyakarta. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif dengan jenis penelitian survei. Populasi penelitian adalah semua guru MAN di Kabupaten Sleman yang berjumlah 234 orang. Sampel penelitian sebanyak 148 guru melalui teknik probability sampling. Pengumpulan data melalui kuesioner dengan validasi item dari ahli dan uji emprik. Uji validitas dan reliabilitas dilakukan dengan menggunakan bantuan program IBM SPSS Statistics 29. Uji dan analisis hipotesis penelitian menggunakan regresi berganda. The rapid development of large anguage models (LLMs) has sparked growing interest in their potential to transform education. This study explores how LLMs influence collaborative learning, focusing on student creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving, and collective intelligence. Specifically, it investigates whether artificial intelligence (AI)–assisted group work enhances or hinders these aspects of the learning process. We used a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative data from surveys, structured interviews, and analysis of student project outputs. Faculty in higher education recognize the importance of enhancing student engagement in online courses (Hollister et al., 2022; Richards, 2023), yet challenges like lack of confidence, difficulty understanding students, and managing workload often hinder prioritization (Kellen & Kumar, 2021). This qualitative phenomenological study explored eight university instructors' and faculty members' perceptions of student engagement in online courses, examining strategies, challenges, and successes in fostering a sense of community through individual interviews. Findings revealed various strategies to enhance engagement, such as integrating multimedia for interactive discussions.
