Empowerment Or Oppression? College Students’ Interpretations Of Sex And Relationships In The Popular Media, Nicola Mcclung, Riana Pella

Scholars have long emphasized the harmful effects of overtly sexist and oppressive media images on young people’s understandings of sex and relationships. Yet, this emphasis on explicit harm leaves a gap in understanding how college students interpret subtle, hidden, and ambiguous media messages. To address this gap, we asked 196 California college students at a large public university to critique a range of mainstream media content— from overtly oppressive, to affirming of nondominant gender identities, to containing mixed messages about empowerment and oppression. This paper offers a theoretical reflection on the evolving landscape of automated media, focusing on how automation and so-called Artificial Intelligence (AI) are reshaping traditional media-related practices and the competences required for media literacy. It examines how automated media technologies, such as recommendation algorithms and generative AI, might reshape the critical skills necessary to navigate a complex digital ecosystem. By framing AI-driven media practices through a social-action perspective and treating media as human activities, we argue that media literacy models should encompass competences related to the operation of computational automata, particularly through the management of inbound and outbound information flows. …

One current and increasingly common trend in elementary and early childhood English Language Arts (ELA) instruction is the use of scripted literacy programs requiring teachers to implement the curriculum with fidelity. This has consequences for writing instruction as students continue to score below proficiency levels on national writing assessments (National Center for Educational Statistics, 2011), and the tendency for a mismatch between recommended writing instruction and classroom practice. Wordless picturebooks are an underutilized tool in elementary classrooms despite growing recognition as a valuable literacy tool. Research remains limited on how wordless picturebooks influence meaning-making during interactive read-aloud discussions. The guiding question for this study was: "How do first-graders and their teacher construct meaning during three interactive read-alouds of wordless picturebooks?" This qualitative study was conducted in a first-grade classroom. Data was collected through audio and video recordings of three interactive read-alouds facilitated by the teacher-researcher. Despite state mandates requiring culturally responsive teaching (CRT) implementation, the problem addressed by this study was that urban high school teachers are not consistently integrating CRT practices with Black students in Reading/English language arts (RELA) courses. Guided by the CRT framework, the purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore the experiences of urban high school teachers with incorporating CRT practices with Black high school students in RELA courses in Maryland. Objectives: This study aimed to analyze the implementation and impact of students’ creative independent work in English language lessons at Toraighyrov University in Pavlodar.

Methods: The research employed a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods, including logical analysis, functional analysis, and formal legal approaches, supplemented by deductive and inductive reasoning. The empirical phase involved a pedagogical experiment with two student groups (n = 37) to evaluate the effectiveness of creative independent work methods.

Results: Results demonstrated that incorporating creative independent work significantly enhanced both English language competency and broader professional skills, including critical thinking and autonomous learning capabilities. Students …

Early childhood education is inextricably linked to the role of adults in every aspect of its process. In addition to formal classroom learning, storytelling with a storyteller is another activity that involves adults. The dialogic interaction between storyteller and children fosters the creation of meaning. This study examines how storytelling, as an interactional practice, can dynamically construct meaning together between storyteller and children. Sixty-one kindergarten children participated in this study during a one and half hour storytelling activity. This research explores SMU’s undergraduate students in their own identities and romantic relationships in the realm of the bisexuality spectrum using the Kinsey Scale. I developed a 46-item online survey comprised of six component parts, which incorporated previous scales of Kinsey, Consensual Non-Monogamy, Self-Acceptance of Sexuality Inventory, and Experience in Close Relationships scales, to measure respondents’ sense of attraction and preferences as well as attachment scales and assess the participants’ relationship beliefs pertaining to consensual non-monogamy. This paper presents the professional-development and institutional-implementation component of a three-paper program on introducing data-driven dynamical systems into undergraduate ordinary differential equations instruction at a primarily undergraduate institution. The companion paper \cite{SelvitellaAnderson2026} develops the mathematical and computational content, including regression, regularization, Dynamic Mode Decomposition, Sparse Identification of Nonlinear Dynamics, and a Van der Pol oscillator activity. The present paper asks a complementary implementation question: what departmental structures, graduate teaching assistant roles, professional-development activities, and course-support pathways are needed for such materials to become teachable within local undergraduate settings?

Despite growing diversity across many professions, Latine individuals remain underrepresented in the STEM workforce. School counselors are uniquely positioned to help eliminate these disparities by empowering Latine students to pursue STEM career pathways. Therefore, the purpose of this qualitative study was to explore how school counselors capitalize on Latine students’ community cultural wealth to support them in pursuing postsecondary STEM opportunities. We conducted 50-90-minute interviews with eight school counselors from South Texas to explore their lived experiences supporting Latine students with STEM aspirations.
