The Use Of Modern Technology In Social Work, Frederic Reamer

Frederic G Reamer

The article focuses on ethical dilemmas regarding the use of modern technology in social work practice. Social Work Scholarship And Gatekeeping, Frederic Reamer

Frederic G Reamer

This article responds to Pardeck and Meinert’s claim that editorial board members for the journal Social Work lack adequate records of scholarship. Pardeck and Meinert raise a number of compelling points about the qualifications of the journal’s editorial board members. The author argues, however, that Pardeck and Meinert’s results might be different if they broadened their definition of scholarship to include books and anthology chapters, and examined a more substantial time period. Furthermore, the author argues that many qualified editorial board members can be drawn from the ranks of accomplished scholars who are at a point in their careers where …

The Social Work Ethics Audit, Frederic Reamer

Frederic G Reamer

In recent years, social work's knowledge base related to professional ethics has expanded significantly. This article integrates current knowledge on social work ethics and introduces the concept of a social work ethics audit to aid social workers in their efforts to identify pertinent ethical issues; review and assess the adequacy of their current ethics-related practices; modify their practices as needed; and monitor the implementation of these changes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR].

Social Workers' Management Of Error, Frederic Reamer

Frederic G Reamer

Social workers, like all professionals, sometimes make mistakes. For example, they may disclose clients' confidential information inappropriately, fail to respond to clients' reasonable requests in a timely manner, or engage in improper dual relationships with clients. Ideally, social workers who err would follow a protocol that honors the profession's commitment to responsible and honest communication and minimizes the practical risks faced by social workers who might be named in lawsuits, licensing board complaints, and ethics complaints. This article explores the nature and forms of social work error and possible constructive responses to it that (a) protect clients, (b) minimize risk …

Ethics Committees In Social Work, Frederic Reamer 2011 Rhode Island College

Ethics Committees In Social Work, Frederic Reamer

Frederic G Reamer

This article discusses the need of professional ethics committees, which will provide guidelines for social workers on the moral needs and limitations of their clients. Course content in social work training programs, workshops, and literature on the subject have increased substantially since the mid-1970s. In part, this is due to increased awareness among social workers that decisions in practice often contain ethical issues that clinical and technical tools alone cannot resolve. Complex decisions about limitations on clients' right to confidentiality or self -determination, allocation of limited social service resources, and whistle blowing have led social workers to seek guidelines to …

This article clarifies priorities in social work education. One of the hottest controversies among people these days concerns the proliferation of social work education programs. Proponents claim the need to enhance students' access by increasing the number of pro- grams throughout the United States. Critics, however, worry about saturating certain geographical "markets" and inadequate quality control. Programs always develop reputations, whether deserved or not. Some become known as weak, others as strong. Others become tagged with "too clinical" or "not clinical enough." Whatever the labels, all programs seem to have them. Frederic G Reamer

Sometimes being nearsighted is advantageous. In times of crisis, preoccupation with the long view can be disastrous. Rescue teams need to be able to focus intently on what is right before their eyes. Few want the emergency room surgeon to speculate for long about what may be way down the road for the patient whose life is on the line.
