Investigation On Slab Continuous Straightening Technology And Deformation Analysis, Xingzhong Zhang, Hongtao Zhu, Wen Huang, Baojun Shi, Anh Kiet Tieu

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A new method of setting continuous bending and straightening strain rate according to temperature subzone was brought forward. By making use of the high temperature creep character effectively during the continuous casting slab being straightened, a new model curve of continuous caster was developed. And by using theoretical and finite element method the strain and strain rate of the slab under multi-point straightening and the new continuous straightening were analysed. The result shows that for continuous straightening the strain rate of the slab is constant and lower than that of the slab under multi-point straightening, and the strain varies linearly. …

Verifiable And Anonymous Encryption In Asymmetric Bilinear Maps, Hui Cui, Yi Mu, Man Ho Au

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Consider a practical scenario: an untrusted gate-way is required to verify all the incoming information en-crypted via an encryption scheme, while the sender does not want to reveal any information about the plaintext and the privileged user to the gateway. That is, the gateway distributes the information to a predefined group of users and only the privileged user can open the message. To solve this problem, we need an access control mechanism to allow certain specification of the access control policies while protecting the users' privacy. With this scenario in mind, we propose the notion of verifiable and anonymous encryption …

Threshold-Oriented Optimistic Fair Exchange, Yang Wang, Man Ho Allen Au, Joseph K. Liu, Tsz Hon Yuen, Willy Susilo 2013 University of Wollongong

Threshold-Oriented Optimistic Fair Exchange, Yang Wang, Man Ho Allen Au, Joseph K. Liu, Tsz Hon Yuen, Willy Susilo

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Fair exchange protocol aims to allow two parties to exchange digital items in a fair manner. It is well-known that fairness can only be achieved with the help of a trusted third party, usually referred to as arbitrator. A fair exchange protocol is optimistic if the arbitrator is not involved in the normal execution of the fair exchange process. That is, its presence is necessary only when one of the exchanging parties is dishonest. Traditionally, the items being exchanged are digital signatures. In this paper, we consider the items to be threshold signatures. Specifically, the signatures are created by a …

Effect Of Confining Pressure And Frequency On The Deformation Of Ballast, Pramod Kumar Thakur, Jayan Sylaja Vinod, Buddhima Indraratna 2013 University of Wollongong

Effect Of Confining Pressure And Frequency On The Deformation Of Ballast, Pramod Kumar Thakur, Jayan Sylaja Vinod, Buddhima Indraratna

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Increasing the speed and frequency of trains with the same static axle weight imparts higher dynamic axle loads more frequently. When this occurs on existing track which has not been designed for such loading there can be increased rates of ballast degradation, characterised by unacceptable deformation and lateral spread, leading to more frequent requirements for track maintenance. Recent studies carried out at the University of Wollongong highlighted that confining pressure and frequency have a significant influence on the permanent deformation and degradation of ballast. However, confinement required to keep the deformation and degradation of the ballasted track to an acceptable …

Unstable Willmore Surfaces Of Revolution Subject To Natural Boundary Conditions, Anna Dall'Acqua, Klaus Deckelnick, Glen Wheeler 2013 Otto-Von-Guericke-Universitat

Unstable Willmore Surfaces Of Revolution Subject To Natural Boundary Conditions, Anna Dall'acqua, Klaus Deckelnick, Glen Wheeler

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In the class of surfaces with fixed boundary, critical points of the Willmore functional are naturally found to be those solutions of the Euler-Lagrange equation where the mean curvature on the boundary vanishes. We consider the case of symmetric surfaces of revolution in the setting where there are two families of stable solutions given by the catenoids. In this paper we demonstrate the existence of a third family of solutions which are unstable critical points of the Willmore functional, and which spatially lie between the upper and lower families of catenoids. Our method does not require any kind of smallness …

Behaviour Of A Compacted Silty Sand Under Constant Water Content Shearing, Ana Heitor, Cholachat Rujikiatkamjorn, Buddhima Indraratna

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This structure derived from compacting the soil at different water contents and energy levels can have a substantial effect on its shear strength. While the shear strength with varying suction can be estimated based on the saturated shear strength parameters and the unsaturated angle of shearing resistance (0b), limited studies have explored the variation of strength properties with different compaction states. In this paper, the shear strength of a silty sand soil was investigated using a conventional direct shear box under constant water content condition. The tests were conducted on specimens prepared by Proctor compaction with three different normal pressures. …

Time-Domain Spectroscopy Of Novel Nematic Liquid Crystals In The Terahertz Range, Christian Weickhmann, R Jakoby, Evan Constable, R A. Lewis

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The dielectric properties of nematic liquid crystal (LC) mixtures are measured from 300 GHz to 1500 GHz. Measurements are performed in a standard THz TDS setup. Refractive index and extinction coefficient for parallel and perpendicular orientation are calculated and compared to results obtained at 19 GHz. The investigated mixtures are of interest for Terahertz devices as their properties stay almost constant from 19 GHz to 1500 GHz.

Understanding Indigenous Consultation And Engagement In Engineering Education, Thomas Goldfinch, Jade Kennedy 2013 University of Wollongong

Understanding Indigenous Consultation And Engagement In Engineering Education, Thomas Goldfinch, Jade Kennedy

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

BACKGROUND Higher education participation rates among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are significantly lower than for other Australians (Behrendt, Larkin, Griew, & Kelly, 2012). In addition, Indigenous Australian participation rates in engineering and other technology related fields are lower than for other fields such as law, health and education (DEEWR, 2008). This presents a substantial challenge for engineering education to increase participation rates among Indigenous Australians towards those of other Australians. Engineering schools and Industry have responded with an array of outreach, scholarship, and support programs which have taken small steps towards this (BHP Billiton, 2012; EAA, 2013; Rio …

A Novel Formulation For Optimum Conceptual Design Of Buildings Of Rectangular Shapes, Pezhman Sharafi, Muhammad Hadi, Lip H. Teh 2013 University of Wollongong

A Novel Formulation For Optimum Conceptual Design Of Buildings Of Rectangular Shapes, Pezhman Sharafi, Muhammad Hadi, Lip H. Teh

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In many optimum design cases, we look for a set of design variables selected from a given list which assure the optimum of objective function together with satisfaction of the constraints. That is, optimum conceptual design mostly consists of selecting the best combination of a finite number of structural elements and the available parameters. In this paper a novel technique is presented for the conceptual design optimization of framed buildings with a rectangular plan. The method supports all the buildings with grid pattern column layout. To that end, we take advantage of the knapsack problem as a basic applied combinatorial …

Estimation Of Capacity Credits For Wind Generation Plants In The South East Australian Power Grid, Md Abu Abdullah, Kashem Muttaqi, Ashish Agalgaonkar, Darmawan Sutanto 2013 University of Wollongong

Estimation Of Capacity Credits For Wind Generation Plants In The South East Australian Power Grid, Md Abu Abdullah, Kashem Muttaqi, Ashish Agalgaonkar, Darmawan Sutanto

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

It is important to estimate the contribution of the wind generation plants in the evaluation of system generation adequacy for power generation planning. Australia has recently proposed to utilize the diversity of the wind energy resources in Southeast Australian power grid through existing inter-State interconnections. This paper aims to present a probabilistic adequacy model for the capacity credit estimation of wind generation plants in interconnected power systems. In particular, the proposed adequacy model will be applied to investigate how sharing of wind energy resource diversity can enhance the capacity credit of the wind generation plants. The impact of the inter-tie …

On A Counterexample To A Conjecture By Blackadar, Adam P. Sorensen 2013 University of Wollongong

On A Counterexample To A Conjecture By Blackadar, Adam P. Sorensen

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Blackadar conjectured that if we have a split short-exact sequence 0-I-A-C-0 were I is semiprojective then A must be semiprojective. Eilers and Katsura have found a counterexample to this conjecture. Presumably Blackadar asked that the extension be split to make it more likely that semiprojectivity of I would imply semiprojectivity of A. But oddly enough, in all the counterexamples of Eilers and Katsura the quotient map from A to A/I=~C is split. We will show how to modify their examples to find a non-semiprojective C* -algebra B with a semiprojective idal J such that B/J is the complex numbers and …

Inclusion removal by slag is primarily achieved by optimizing process conditions that promote slag contact with the inclusion. For efficient inclusion removal the inclusions must adhere to the slag phase. The strength of the attachment can be characterised by the wettability of the slag on the inclusions.

Analyses Of Reinforced Embankment On Soft And Hard Foundations, Sowarapan Duangkhae, Dennes Bergado, Pankaj Baral, Barry T. Ocay

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In this paper, the analyses and design using conservative limit equilibrium methods (AASHTO simplified and FHWA structure stiffness methods) were compared with the working stress methods called K-stiffness method (original and modified K-stiffness methods). Moreover, the predictions from the K-stiffness methods were confirmed from the observed data for a reinforced embankment on a hard foundation. Furthermore, since the reinforcement loads increased due to post-construction settlements for reinforced embankments on soft foundation, a further modification of the K-stiffness method is proposed. This further modification is concerned with the proposed settlement factor. The validity of this further modification is demonstrated by the …

I think it is somewhat arbitrary to try to dissociate the effective practice of freedom by people, the practice of social relations, and the spatial distributions in which they find themselves. If they are separated, they become impossible to understand. Each can only be understood through the other. - Michel Foucault, "Space, Knowledge, Power"
