Associate Professor Adam Rennie
We construct a family of purely infinite C¤-algebras, Q¸ for ¸ 2 (0, 1) that are classified by their K-groups. There is an action of the circle T with a unique KMS state à on each Q¸. For ¸ = 1/n, Q1/n »= On, with its usual T action and KMS state. For ¸ = p/q, rational in lowest terms, Q¸ »= On (n = q − p + 1) with UHF fixed point algebra of type (pq)1. For any n > 1, Q¸ »= On for infinitely many ¸ with distinct KMS states and UHF fixed-point algebras. For any ¸ …

City Notifications As A Data Source For Traffic Management, Pramod Anantharam, Biplav Srivastava
Kno.e.sis Publications
A common problem for cities of developing countries like India in managing traffic is the lack of basic automated instrumentation to track road conditions or vehicle locations. Still, to help their citizens make informed travel decisions based on changing city dynamics; many cities have an authorized, city-initiated, notification service in place to alert subscribing commuters about road conditions. Here, alternative means may be used to create informal textual notifications e.g., inputs from field personnel, citizen updates, and pre-authorized events from city calendar. In this paper, we show that collections of such notifications, when processed with information extraction techniques, can turn …

Since 2005, reported laser attacks from people on the ground directed towards arriving and departing aircraft have increased over 300%. A laser aimed at the windshield of an aircraft startles a pilot and may cause injury. This study determined empirical evidence of laser intensity in the flight deck and the potential for harm to the human eye at various distances. Results of this study revealed that relatively low-powered lasers had measured intensity levels through cockpit windshields at the 200 and 500 feet distances that may cause damage to crewmembers’ eyes according to standards established by the federal government. At longer …

This paper proposes a series of methods for representing changes in human motion during injury rehabilitation using Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) inertial sensors. Tracking the changes over a recovery period requires methods for evaluating the similarity of movement in an impaired state against a non-impaired state. We investigate the use of motion analyses such as the centre of mass (COM) tipping distance, the variance of joint velocity eigenvalues and the cumulative state changes of Gaussian mixture models (GMM) for monitoring the symmetry between the left and right sides of body during rehabilitation exercises. The methods are tested on an injured athlete …

Weld induced distortion correction is a major cost within the shipbuilding industry. This paper investigates the use of an active cooling process known as Dynamically Controlled - Low Stress No Distortion (DC-LSND) Welding on DH-36 steel. Thermal profiles are obtained and distortion measurements are also achieved. Results show that the application of a localised cryogenic cooling source trailing the welding arc can significantly reduce weld induced distortion using the GMAW process. The effect of forced cooling on the weld microstructure is also observed.

High strength quenched and tempered (Q&T) steels offer obvious economic benefits originating from their advantageous strength to price and weight ratios. These steels are usually welded using ferritic consumables and for this combination the risk of hydrogen assisted cold cracking (HACC) is high. The use of austenitic stainless steel (ASS) consumables has great potential to significantly improve this issue. Yet, there are no guidelines for determination of safe level of preheat for welding ferritic steels with ASS consumables. For this reason manufacturers adopt this parameter from procedures developed for conventional ferritic consumables thus significantly limiting the benefits ASS consumables are …
3d Mapping Using A Tof Camera For Self Programming An Industrial Robot, 2013 University of Wollongong
3d Mapping Using A Tof Camera For Self Programming An Industrial Robot, N Larkin, Zengxi Pan, S Van Duin, J Norrish
zengxi pan
Automated Offline Programing (AOLP) is a cost effective robot programming method. However, it relies on accurate CAD information of the work environment to perform optimally. Incorrect CAD data is a known source of error for AOLP systems. This paper introduces a new sensor based method of programming that extends the concept of AOLP. Using a ToF camera to map the environment, there is no reliance on CAD data. The problem of motion planning to efficiently map the environment is examined and changes to the motion planning algorithm are proposed and tested.

In this study, the feasibility of hybrid laser-gas metal arc welding process for replacement of conventional flux-cored arc welding procedure for welding high strength quenched and tempered steel was investigated. Experimental work focused on optimisation of process parameters to produce joint with desired properties. Hardness of the weld heat affected zone produced by both processes has been measured. Productivity and cost effectiveness of both processes were compared. It was concluded that hybrid laser-gas metal arc welding process is suitable for welding high strength quenched and tempered steel.

Robotics based automation has many advantages over both manual operation and dedicated hard automation. In practice however the robot programming overhead and high cost of dedicated jigging are serious impediments to its use for short production runs. Offline programming packages offer an attractive alternative to reduce programming time and robot down time, however many of the available packages are fairly complex and treat the geometric programming and welding operation separately. The paper will describe the development of alternative approaches and the evaluation of an integrated offline robotic welding package (RinasWeld) which addresses these issues and makes low volume robotic welding …

Australian Online Supermarket Usability, Mark Freeman, Peter Hyland, Jeffrey Soar
Dr Mark Freeman
The issue of usability plays a vital role in the success of an online store. However, to date there has been limited published research into this issue and there has been no research conducted into multiple item purchasing. There is much competition in the grocery shopping industry between the two major physical supermarket chains in Australia, Woolworths and Coles, both in traditional stores and online. Online, the major competitor is ShopFast, which does not have a traditional supermarket storefront to complement its online operations. The purpose of this study was to conduct a comparative analysis into the usability of ordering …

Toward A New Understanding Of Virtual Research Collaborations: Complex Adaptive Systems Framework, Arsev U. Aydinoglu
DataONE Sociocultural and Usability & Assessment Working Groups
Virtual research collaborations (VRCs) have become an important method of conducting scientific activity; however, they are often regarded and treated as traditional scientific collaborations. Their success is measured by scholarly productivity and adherence to budget by funding agencies, participating scientists, and scholars. VRCs operate in complex environments interacting with other complex systems. A holistic (or organicist) approach is needed to make sense of this complexity. For that purpose, this study proposes using a new perspective, namely, the complex adaptive systems theory that can provide a better understanding of a VRC’s potential creativity, adaptability, resilience, and probable success. The key concepts …
