Investigation On The Behavior Of Rigid Polyvinylchloride Pipes Subjected To Uniaxial Compression Loads, Alhamati Abdullah Ali Nasser, Ghazali Abdul Halim, Norzaie Jamalodin
ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development
The objective of this research was to investigate the capability of rigid Polyvinylchloride (PVC-U) pipes to sustain axial loads. The behavior of PVC-U pipes specimens subjected to short-term uniaxial compression loads were experimentally investigated. Results of the load-displacement tests on pipes of different wall thickness, diameter, and specimen heights were recorded. The experimental test results show that the PVC-U pipes are capable of supporting loads greater than the required design load (3.4 kN). Increasing the pipe specimen height decreases the pipe strength for supporting the axial loads. Euler buckling was observed in the pipe specimens with small diameter and long …

Effectiveness Of Selected Entomopathogenic Fungi In Packed Rice Grain At Room Temperature Against Corcyra Cephalonica Stainton, Samodra Hendrawan, Ibrahim Yusof Bin
ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development
Eight isolates of entomopathogenic fungi were evaluated as dried conidia against the rice moth, Corcyra cephalonica. In bioassays two isolates of Beauveria bassiana (BbGc and BbPs) and one isolate of Metarhizium anisopliae (MaPs) consistently gave high mortality to C. cephalonica larvae. Formulations in either kaolin, talc or tapioca flour (20 % w/w a.i.) thoroughly mixed with long grain rice in plastic cups (8 cm diameter by 5 cm) gave complete larval mortality by the 12th day of treatment. However, in general those formulated in kaolin and talc were more efficacious and faster to kill compared to those formulated in tapioca …

Rationale: Cardiac lipotoxicity, characterized by increased uptake, oxidation and accumulation of lipid intermediates, contributes to cardiac dysfunction in obesity and diabetes. However, mechanisms linking lipid overload and mitochondrial dysfunction are incompletely understood.
Objective: To elucidate the mechanisms for mitochondrial adaptations to lipid overload in postnatal hearts in vivo.
Methods and Results: Using a transgenic mouse model of cardiac lipotoxicity overexpressing long-chain acyl-CoA synthetase 1 in cardiomyocytes, we show that modestly increased myocardial fatty acid uptake leads to mitochondrial structural remodeling with significant reduction in minimum diameter. This is associated with increased palmitoyl-carnitine oxidation and increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation …

Characteristics Of Solid-State Calcium Ion Sensors Based On Photocurable And Selfplasticising Polyacrylate Matrices, Heng Lee Yook, Hall Elizabeth A.H.
ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development
New membrane materials based on cross-linked poly(n-butyl acrylate) (nBA), have been used successfully as calcium ion-selective membranes. These membrane materials possess selfplasticising property and hence do not require plasticisers. The photocurability and good adhesion characteristics of these polymer matrices enable workable solid-state calcium ion sensors to be fabricated by simple photocure procedures employing the calcium ionophore ETH5234 and a lipophilic additive as ion sensing components. The calcium ion-selectivity of the sensors can be controlled by varying the chemical composition of the photocured membrane. An optimum amount of the cross-linker 2,2-hexanedioldiacrylate (HDDA) and the incorporation of n-heptyl acrylate (nHA) led to …

The Safety Of Building Structures Subject To Unusual Natural And Man-Made Disasters, Pho Nguyen Van
ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development
Previously, we often use the statistical data on natural disasters and mathematical tools such as probabilistic theory, mathematical statistics and random processes to express and analyze natural disasters' phenomena when dealing with the safety problem of building structures subject to natural disasters. However, due to unusual change of the global climate, natural disasters have changed essentially the intensity, frequency and the appearing time so we cannot rely on the statistical data on natural disasters in the past to do that. Therefore, renovation of the thought on selection of plans, calculation, design, and evaluation of safety of building structures to accommodate …
