The consumption of coagulation inhibitors will augment coagulation triggered excessively in sepsis. The determination of levels of these inhibitors may open new substitution treatment schedules to overcome the plateau of the achieved improvement ratio with antimicrobial treatment. Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, 1x10 9 per kg day for two days was administered intravenously to 30 albino rabbits to induce sepsis. Clinical and hematological signs were determined and sepsis was determined with blood culture. PCNA (proliferating cell nuclear antigen) immunoreactivity in the uterus of mature rats was investigated after long term administration of clomiphene citrate and ovariectomy. In the luminal epithelium and glandular epithelium and endometrial stroma regions, few PCNA-immunoreactive cells were observed. PCNA reactivity was estimated for the luminal and glandular epithelium and for the stromal cells. Treatment of clomiphene citrate decreased the proliferation of the luminal epithelial cell and stromal cells to the same extent as ovariectomy. The method of Thallium - 201- single - photon emission computed tomography (Tl-201 SPECT) have been commonly used to detect uncontractile but viable myocardium in patients with ischemic left ventricular dysfunction. The aim of this study was to establish the value of nitrate echocardiography (NE) and low dose dobutamine echocardiography (LDDE) to detect viable myocardium when compared to Tl-201 SPECT. This experiment was conducted to investigate the dose-dependent effects of gentamicin (GM) on the neuroepithelial morphology of the posterior crista ampullares (PCA) of the adult chinchilla. The experiment focused on hair cell (HC) morphology to monitor GM's dose-dependent effects and also to define an ototoxically-efficient and safe dose what would subsequently be used in a time course study. Cigarette smoke contains high concentrations of oxidants and reactive oxygen species. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of long-term cigarette smoking on glutathione (GSH) levels in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid. Nineteen current cigarette smokers and seven healthy nonsmoking volunteers were included in the study. BAL was performed by infusion of five sequential 20 ml aliquots and each aliquot was immediately aspirated. The levels of GSH were determined in BAL fluids. During the dissection of an amputed leg, we discovered a combined variation involving the branching of the popliteal artery and tibial nerve. The popliteal artery showed a trifurcation pattern, and one of its branches, the posterior tibial artery, was hypoplastic. In addition, a small branch arising from the tibial nerve in the upper part of the leg distally crossed the peroneal artery and contributed to the medial plantar nerve. Nosocomial infections are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in hospitalized children, and the urinary tract is one of the most common sites of these infections. We retrospectively reviewed the charts of 1,221 children discharged with a diagnosis of urinary tract infection (UTI) from July 1, 1991 to June 30, 1994. Of the 1,221 UTIs, there were 137 (11.2%) cases of nosocomial UTI (NUTI) in 136 patients. Fanconi's anemia is an autosomal recessive disorder with manifestation of chromosomal instability inducible by alkylating agents. Since 1989 we studied 85 patients with suspected Fanconi's anemia (FA) to confirm diagnosis. Cytogenetic analyses were performed on spontaneous and induced cultures of peripheral blood samples. Induction was carried with mitomycin-C (MMC) or diepoxybutane (DEB). The normal range of spontaneous, MMC and DEB-induced breaks were 0.00-0.10, 0.00-0.16 and 0.00-0.16 per cell respectively. Fanconi's anemia was confirmed when breaks were above the normal threshold. According to this criterion 59 patients were confirmed as having FA. This paper describes the mycological examination of patients admitted to the department of dermatology of Kahramanmaras State Hospital. One hundred and seventy samples of finger nails, hairs and skin were collected from patients suspected of having fungal diseases and were examined under a light microscope after being treated with 15-20% KOH solution. It was observed that 68 of the 170 samples contained fungal hyphae and arthrospores, while 62 samples were free of these. Forty samples were observed to have Malasezia furfur. A new approach is proposed to characterize and discriminate temporomandi-bular joint vibrations. It consists of three steps. First, signals recorded during each cycle of mandibular movement are unified into a single time series. Second, this time series is embedded in some multidimensional space. Objectives: This study was performed to determine the frequency and distribution of risk factors for coronary heart disease in people living in the Baskil district of Elazığ. Methods: From a population of 905 individuals aged 35 years and over, 388 were randomly selected. Selection of subjects was done with official records of the Baskil Health Care Center. Although repeated invitations were made, 32 individuals (29 men and 3 women) did not participate. Thus, 356 subjects were enrolled. The purpose of this study was to define carriage rates for Streptococcus pneumoniae in a given population in Ankara and also to determine the sertypes and penicilin resistance of these strains. Oropharyngeal swabs were taken from a total of 661 children between 1 and 11 years of age living in a province of Ankara between January 1995 and January 1997. Serotyping was performed by detection of the Quellung reaction. Right upper quadrant billary type pain is classified in three types. Biliary group lll patients have only biliary type pain that is due to sphincter of Oddi dyskinesia and without any abnormalities. In scientific investigations; statistical knowledge is essential for collection and analysis of data properly as well as correct interpretation of literature information. In this study that was made in March 1997, opinions of 46 assistant doctors in Süleyman Demirel University Medicine Faculty about statistical knowledge were investigated by a questionnaire. All respondents have agreed on the fact that comprehension of the statistical process in an article was necessary for throughout understanding. Arginine metabolism by mycoplasmas has been reported to be correlated with pathogenicity. Since a clinically important mycoplasma; M. fermentans hydrolyses arginine as an energy source, the arginine metabolism amongst M. fermentans strains belonging to different isolation sites was investigated. Arginine hydrolysis was detected by the increase in NH 4+ concentration, measured using an NH 4+ -sensitive electrode. The method proved simple to use and gave reproducible results. In broth medium, arginine and glucose were both shown to act as energy sources for growth. It was also shown that, in contrast to previous work, glucose inhibited arginine hydrolysis during growth.
