In this study we investigated the effect of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) on tear secretion in rats. The animals were anesthetized intraperitoneally (ip) with urethane (1,2g/kg). The treatment was injected subcutaneously (s.c.). Tear samples were collected by folding a 5 mm section of a Schirmer strip over the lower lid margin to absorb tear fluid from the lower conjunctival sac for 5 min. In this study; inhibitory and bactericidal activities of cefoperazone + sulbactam against Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains were determined in two studies first in 1992 and second in 1994. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) values were determined by following the microdilution method recommended by NCCLS (Approved Standard M7-A2 1990) protocol. P.aeruginosa strains were isolated from different clinical materials. Purpose: Acne vulgaris is a disease with no known ocular involvement and is most commonly seen in the younger population. The aim of this study was to examine the ocular surfaces of acne vulgaris patients with no ocular signs and symptoms by impression cytology. Methods: The study groups included 74 eyes of 37 acne vulgaris patients and 28 eyes of 14 healthy control subjects from the same age group. There are both histomorphometric and nonhistomorphometric studies confirming that etidronate reduces bone resorption. In this study, we have examined urinary Calcium/Creatinine ratio (uCA/Cr) as a biochemical marker of bone turnover to show the effectiveness of etidronate and whether it could be used as a follow-up parameter of treatment. Eighty-one postmenopausal women aged 40 to 65 included into the study to investigate the effects of etidronate on uCa/Cr in a prospective, randomised, placebo controlled clinical trial. Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the risk factors in the development of total parenteral nutrition associated cholestasis which is a significant clinical problem for pediatric surgeons. Methods: The medical records of 54 neonates who had received total parenteral nutrition for more than two weeks were reviewed retros pectively. Regional odontodisplasia is a developmental anomaly of dental tissues with characteristic clinical, radiographic and histologic appearances. It most commonly affects the maxillary anterior teeth of both the primary and permanent dentition, and occurs in females twice as often as in males. The pathogenesis is unknown. A case of a twelve- year old female with regional odontodisplasia is presented. Although the affected teeth displayed the radiographical and clinical features of odontodisplasia, the patient appeared with significant soft tissue swelling on the anterior region of the mandible.

Biological damage mediated by reactive oxygen species has been increasingly recognized in aging phenomena in recent decades. The increase in catecholamine metabolism is yet another physiological change in aging, predisposing the organism to supranormal hydrogen peroxide produc-tion as a by-product. Some genetic diseases may have increased cellular instability. Since chronic myloid leukemia (CML) has a genetic base, we aimed to seek the genetic instability of patients by micronucleus analysis, a mutation screening test which was applied by cytokinesis-blocked (CB) method. In this study, 10 CML patients at diagnosis, were analysed for their micronuclei (MN) frequencies. The values were evaluated in different culture conditions of blood and bone marrow cells. In this prospective study, we found that 21.80% (29/133) of nosocomial urinary tract infections (NUTis) were caused by Escherichia coli, 12.78% (17/133) by Pseudomonas aeruginosa and 10.53% (14/133) by Klebsiella pneumoniae whereas 16.54% (22/133) were caused by coagulase negative staphylococci. The highest susceptibility rate was determined with imipenem among gram negatives (21/28 for non-fermentatives and 65/66 for others); and with vancomycin (30/30) and pristinamycin (29/30) among gram positives. On the other hand, the lowest susceptibilities were to amoxicilin (7/66), amoxicilin clavulonat (18/66) and cotrimoxazole (27/66) among gram negatives other than non-fermentatives. This study was designed to evaulate the effects of reconstruction of anterior cruciate ligament on cartilage collagen and proteoglycan metabolism. Proteoglycan fragments (PF) and matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1) levels were assessed in synovial fluids aspirated from 17 patients preoperatively and at 1 st month postoperatively. Synovial fluids of 10 healthy knee served as controls. Both MMP-1 and proteoglycan fragments were found significantly elevated in pathological knees preoperatively with compare to control. The postoperative levels of MMP-1 and proteoglycans were also significantly higher than preoperative and control values. Urinary-tract infections (UTI) are common infectious diseases in childhood. The presence of UTI may be an indicator of a serious genitourinary (GU) abnormality that requires medical intervention. We retrospectively reviewed the charts of children discharged with a diagnosis of UTI from the Texas Children's Hospital, Houston, Texas, between July 1, 1991 and June 30, 1994. The purpose of the study was to determine how many patients had underlying GU abnormalities, the specific type of abnormality, and the microorganism causing the UTI. We investigated the effect of antibiotic or G-CSF plus antibiotic therapy given to E. coli septic rats. In our study, 80 rats were inoculated transperitoneally with 1 ml of a solution containing 10 7 colony forming units per milliliter of E. coli. Rats were divided into four treatment groups before being inoculaded with E. coli in a random fashion. Therapy was then started with cefotaxime (150 mg/kg intraperitonelally) and either Granulocyte-Colony Stimulation Factor (G-CSF; 30 µg/kg intarperitoneally) or placebo 24 hours after inoculation of E. coli for 3 consective days. Purpose: To evaluate the vascular patency of microanastomoses in rats with color Doppler ultrasonography. Materials and Methods: 15 superficial femoral and 15 carotid arterial end-to-end anastomoses were performed in 30 white rats. All arteries were evaluated pre- and post-operatively by color Doppler ultrasonography with a 7.5 mHz linear transducer (Acuson 128HP). All results were correlated with surgery after final Doppler evaluation. Results: The subjects were divided into three groups: (a) patent anastomosis; (b) partial occlusive anastomosis; (c) total occlusive anastomosis. Plasmodium berghei is the rodent equivalent of Plasmodium falciparum which causes cerebral malaria in humans. However, P. berghei does not cause cerebral malaria in BALB/c mice, instead it leads to parasitemia, fever and some degree of liver damage. Although different aspects of immunological response have been intensively investigated in malaria; this the first time the in vitro effect of P. berghei antigen lysate on murine NK cytotoxic activity was studied. A two-year old male infant with generalized BCG lymphadenitis is presented. There was no obvious immunodeficiency disorder detected in the patient. BCG vaccine had been given at two months of age, and the lymphadenopathy developed at 21 months of age. Fine needle aspiration biopsy of the lymph node on Giemsa stain revealed macrophages very similar to Gaucher cells. These cells also resembled macrophages seen in lepromatous leprosy. They were engorged with acid fast bacilli and had streaked or wrinkled cytoplasm. Mycobacterium bovis was cultured from the lymph nodes and the patients improved with antituberculous therapy.

Galactosialidosis is an autosomal recessive disease with combined deficiency of two lysosomal enzymes due to the lack of a protective protein. We report on a boy with infantile galactosialidosis who has an intermediate phenotype and vitamin D deficiency rickets. Due to the possible role of vitamin D deficiency in the pathogenesis of dysostosis multiplex we recommend that patients with lysosomal storage disease should be supplemented with vitamin D.

NADPH-d reaction was performed on nine male Sprague-Dawley rats and morphometry of NADPH-d(+) cells was investigated in caudate-putamen, globus pallidus and ventral pallidum. In caudate-putamen we observed intensely stained NADPH-d (+) cells. Maximum diameter and minimum diameters of the NADPH-d (+) cells in caudate-putamen was measured as 19.19±0.04 \mum and 10.42±0.12 \mum, consequently. In globus pallidus, moderately stained NADPH-d (+) cells were observed. We measured the maximum and minimum diameters of the NADPH-d (+) cells as 19.93±0.24 \mum and 10.42±0.12 \mum, consequently.
