Perioperative Deaths In A Nigerian Tertiary Teaching Hospital, Chibundu E. Ohanaka, Charles O. Imarengiaye
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Aim: Perioperative deaths may be categorized into avoidable and non-avoidable. An audit of such deaths should be carried out periodically with a view to improving the standard of clinical practice. Materials and Methods: The master registry of the main theater of the hospital was examined to identify all deaths that occurred within the main theater environment (reception, operating room, and recovery room) over a five-year period (January 2000- December 2004). Patients’ ages, sex and timing of surgery (elective or emergency), American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) status and the diagnosis were noted. The diagnosis was further categorized in relation to the …

The Frequency Of Ccr5delta32 Polymorphism In The Central Black Sea Coastal Region In A Healthy Population, Sezgi̇n Özgür Güneş, Nurten Kara, Hasan Bağci
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Aim: Delta32 polymorphism in the chemokine receptor 5 (CCR5) gene affects human immune deficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) entry, transmission, and outcome. The aim of this study was to determine the allelic frequencies of genetic variant CCR5delta32, which influence susceptibility to HIV-1 infection, in a northern Turkish population. Materials and Methods: We determined the allelic frequencies of CCR5delta32 in 449 unrelated healthy individuals from the central Black Sea coastal region without any known history of HIV-1 infection. The polymorphism was analyzed using polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The population was in the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. Delta32 allelic frequencies were calculated. Results: The …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Aims: Chronic infections such as periodontal disease (PD) have been suggested to be a risk factor for coronary heart disease (CHD). Elevated levels of acute phase proteins are associated with increased risk for cardiovascular events in both healthy individuals and patients with known CHD. This study aimed to investigate the role of PD on C-reactive protein (CRP) and fibrinogen levels in patients with either CHD or type 2 diabetes. Materials and Methods: 80 subjects were evaluated in four groups: individuals with CHD+PD (group 1; n: 20), individuals with type 2 diabetes+PD (group 2; n: 20), individuals with PD without any …

Pregnancy Associated Plasma Protein-A And Epilepsy, Abdurrahman Coşkun, Burcu Özdemi̇rli̇, Ramazan Memi̇şoğullari
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
In this study, we aimed to investigate the role of pregnancy-associated plasma protein-A (PAPP-A) as insulin-like growth factor binding protein-4 (IGFBP-4) protease in epilepsy patients. We studied 16 epilepsy patients and 10 healthy controls. Serum PAPP-A levels of epilepsy patients (6.8 ± 3.2 mU/L) were higher than of the control group (5.1 ± 1.9 mU/L), but the difference was not statistically significant (P > 0.05). We concluded that PAPP-A may increase the bioavailability of insulin-like growth factors (IGFs) due to decreased neurogenesis and synthesis of IGFs in chronically epilepsy patients.

Background and Aim: Prenatal diagnosis of chromosome abnormalities is usually performed on amniotic fluid samples. Aneuploidy screening by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), although not an alternative for conventional cytogenetics, has become a useful tool. Materials and Methods: We compared the results of FISH and conventional cytogenetic analysis applied on 51 amniotic fluid samples between January 2002 and December 2005, in our Cytogenetics Laboratory. Amniocytes were extracted using 5 cc of the sample, and direct FISH was applied using an AneuVysion Assay Kit (Vysis). The remaining fluid samples were used for chromosome analysis by conventional methods after long-term cell cultures. …

The 3-dimensional alignment of the carpal bones should be intact to ensure functional integrity of the hand. The treatment of fractures of the carpal bones is challenging and may differ according to localization. A patient with closed carpal injury and his treatment are presented in this report. After his wrist was crushed between a smooth hammer and a workbench during an occupational accident, the patient had multiple carpal bone fractures and remarkable swelling. The type of the injury was regarded to be a sort of capitate-hamate diastasis, although it did not correspond to any type that had been previously described. …

Giant Hydronephrosis Mimicking An Intraabdominal Mass, Turgut Yapanoğlu, Fati̇h Alper, İsa Özbey, Yilmaz Aksoy, Azam Demi̇rel
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Giant hydronephrosis (GH) is a rare entity that may mimic progressive and benign abdominal cystic tumors. Despite the increase in the use of prenatal ultrasound, GH may still be seen in the adult population. We report a case of GH in a 19-year-old female who presented with a progressive abdominal distention and other gastrointestinal symptoms. Diagnostic and therapeutic features of this rare case are discussed in light of the current literature.

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Inflammatory fibroid polyps are uncommon gastrointestinal tract lesions. The stomach and ileum are the most commonly affected sites. Clinical symptoms depend on the location and size of the lesion. Obstruction or intussusception is the most frequent initial symptom when an inflammatory fibroid polyp is located in the small intestine. We describe two cases of inflammatory fibroid polyps of the small intestine causing ileocecal and ileoileal intussusception.

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Aim: Most of the lipids of the skin surface come from the sebaceous glands, which secrete an oily substance called sebum. Some of the sebum lipids are synthesized by sebaceous cells while some are reported to be derived from the plasma. The role of blood lipoproteins in sebum secretion rate and composition is unclear. To this end, excretion rate and composition of skin surface lipids in normo- and type IV hyperlipoproteinemic adult male subjects were compared. Materials and Methods: Quantitative analysis of skin surface lipids of subjects with type IV hyperlipoproteinemia (n:21) and normolipoproteinemia (n:15) was performed by three successive …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
The presence of a supernumerary tooth in the nose is an unusual phenomenon and a rare form of ectopic tooth eruption in the maxillofacial region. In this case, the patient was referred to the hospital with the complaint of severe headache. In the endoscopic examination, the supernumerary tooth crown was not covered with mucosa or granulation tissue. In the present study, the clinical and radiological diagnosis of a supernumerary tooth located in the nose is reported.
