Dermatoglyphics As Markers Of Prenatal Disturbances In Schizophrenia: A Case-Control Study, Bi̇rsen Özyurt, Ahmet Songur, Mustafa Sarsilmaz, Ömer Akyol, Mustafa Namli, Reha Demi̇rel

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Several studies have reported the importance of dermatoglyphics as markers of a prenatal disturbance in patients with schizophrenia. Due to the fact that finger- and handprints are formed by the end of the second trimester, they may provide clues to disturbances in early development. The aim of this study was to determine specific dermatoglyphical frequencies in a sample of patients with schizophrenia and normal controls. Materials and methods: Fingerprints and palm prints were obtained from 45 schizophrenic patients as well as 45 healthy controls. The dermatoglyphic patterns on the fingers (total finger ridge count [TFRC]) and palms (a-b, b-c, and …

Deltamethrin is a widely used type II pyrethroid-based insecticide. Studies have indicated that neonatal exposure to deltamethrin, even at relatively low doses, results in behavioral and neurological changes. In the present study, the effect of early neonatal exposure to low doses of deltamethrin on the histogenesis of the cerebellar cortex was investigated. Materials and methods: Sprague Dawley male pups were exposed to deltamethrin daily at a dose of 1 mg/kg via intraperitoneal injection from the 2nd to the 5th postnatal day and sacrificed on postnatal days 6, 14, and 21. Following intracardiac perfusion, the cerebellum was removed, embedded with paraffin …

Atypical Clinical Manifestation Of Dementia: A Progressive Visuospatial Deficit, Mehmet Güney Şenol, Hakan Tekeli̇, Erdem Toğrol, Mehmet Saraçoğlu

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Clinically and neuropathologically dementia is a very heterogeneous disease. Alzheimer's disease (Alzheimer disease, AD), the most common cause of dementia, is an acquired cognitive and behavioral impairment of sufficient severity that markedly interferes with social and occupational functioning. This disease may be manifested as progressive memory problems, visuospatial deterioration, aphasia and/or deficits of executive functions. The patient we report here is a 73-year-old female patient with loss of ability of finding directions and understanding the shapes of materials. Her complaints increased progressively during the last two years. Even if she had retired from tailoring, she had deterioration in the visuospatial …

Effect Of L-Carnitine On Diabetic Neuropathy And Ventricular Dispersion In Patients With Diabetes Mellitus, Hizir Ulvi̇, Recep Aygül, Recep Demi̇r

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Diabetes is a common cause of polyneuropathy. Cardiac arrhythmias and markedly increased mortality rate have been demonstrated in patients with diabetic neuropathy and also demonstrated that abnormally prolonged QT dispersion interval (QTd) is associated with a higher risk of ventricular arrhythmias and sudden death. We investigated the efficacy and tolerability of L-carnitine (LC) in the treatment of diabetic neuropathy and ventricular dispersion, mainly by evaluating the effects of treatment on electrophysiological parameters. Materials and methods: We recruited 30 patients with type I or type II diabetes (mean age: 60 ± 9 years, range: 36-75; 18 males, 12 females) meeting clinical …

Linear and whorled nevoid hypermelanosis (LWNH) is a reticulate pigmentary disorder with a sporadic occurrence, generally representing a genetic mosaicism. In this case, we describe a two-month-old girl with trisomy 13, who presented with various systemic anomalies such as congenital ventricular septal defect, microcephaly, auricular deformities, flatness of nasal root, overlapping fingers, umbilical hernia, and LWNH. G-banding chromosomal analyses were performed on cultured peripheral blood lymphocytes of the patient and the parents. The karyotype of the patient was 47, XX,+13[100], with no mosaicism. The karyotypes of the parents were normal. To our knowledge, we present the first patient with LWNH …

Results: The histopathologic findings were consistent with pilomatricoma. In the dermis above the tumor, there were numerous dilated lymphatic and blood vessels. No pathologic elastic fibrils were identified with elastin stains. Collagen fibrils were normal with Mason trichrome stain. Conclusions: The …

Local Reccurence Of Giant Renal Cell Carcinoma Without Distant Metastases 25 Years After Radical Nephrectomy, Turgut Yapanoğlu, Yilmaz Aksoy, İsa Özbey, Cemal Gündoğdu, Özkan Polat

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

A 64-year-old man underwent a left radical nephrectomy 25 years ago. The pathological examination revealed renal cell carcinoma (RCC) and no lymph node metastasis. He suffered a recurrence in the renal fossa 25 years after the operation. To our knowledge, this is the first report of late (about 25 years) recurrence of RCC without distant metastases after radical nephrectomy. The isolated fossa recurrence of RCC without any distant metastasis is very uncommon. We suggest that the patients with RCC who underwent radical nephrectomy should undergo lifelong follow up.
