Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Ruxolitinib, a JAK/STAT signaling pathway inhibitor targeted drug, has been approved for the controlling of disease symptoms and splenomegaly in patients with myeloproliferative neoplastic diseases. Recently, it has been proposed that ruxolitinib-induced JAK/STAT pathway inhibition in myelofibrosis is associated with an elevated frequency of aggressive B-cell lymphomas. However, the biological basis and significance of this pharmacobiological adverse event is unknown. The aim of this bioinformatics study is to detect any possible confounding effects of ruxolitinib on the genesis of lymphoproliferative disorders. Materials and methods: The gene expression data were retrieved from the E-MTAB-783 Cancer Genome Project database. Gene expression …

Background/aim: Turkey accepts refugees from many countries, principally Syria. More than 2.7 million refugees live in Turkey. We evaluated the neonatal outcomes of refugees. Materials and methods: We retrospectively reviewed the clinical and demographic characteristics of refugee infants born in our hospital between August 2013 and September 2016. Results: Refugees (718 Syrian, 136 Iraqi, 32 Afghani, and 21 of other nationalities) accounted for 907 of 49,413 births. The mean refugee maternal age was lower than that of Turkish women, whereas the gestational age (GA) and birthweight were similar. Refugees required fewer cesarean sections but exhibited greater small- and large-for-GA rates (P < 0.05). Refugee and Turkish infant mortality rates did not differ significantly (0.8 vs. 0.4%). Eighty-nine (12.3%) refugee neonates and 6682 (13.5%) Turkish neonates were admitted to our neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Jaundice and perinatal asphyxia were significantly more common in refugees, whereas respiratory distress syndrome, GA ≤32 weeks, and infant birthweight

Background/aim: The aim of the study was to determine the effects of robotic-assisted gait training on ambulation and functional capacity in patients with spinal cord injury.Materials and methods: In total, 88 patients were included and were randomly divided into two groups. The first group underwent 16 sessions of robotic therapy training for 8 weeks and conventional therapy for 5 days a week. The second group underwent conventional treatment. The Walking Index for Spinal Cord Injury II was used to evaluate functional ambulation, and the functional independence measure score was used to assess patients' functional independence levels in a blind manner. Results: …

Mir-9 Promotes The Phenotypic Switch Of Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells By Targeting Klf5, Xiaochun Lu, Shitang Ma, Bo Zhou, Tieling Li

Background/aim: Diabetic vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) are characterized by increased proliferation and migration. Small noncoding microRNAs (miRNAs) have been considered critical modulators of the VSMC phenotypic switch after an environmental stimulus. However, microRNA in high glucose-induced proinflammation and its atherogenic effect is still ambiguous. Materials and methods: The technique of qRT-PCR was used to examine the expression of miR-9 in VSMCs. The downstream signaling protein relative to miR-9 regulation, Krüppel-like factor 5, and some marker genes of contractile VSMCs were analyzed by western blotting and qRT-PCR. Luciferase reporter assay was used to detect the expression of KLF5, which is …

Background/aim: To prepare a porcine model of obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) and observe the pathological and hemodynamic changes in the common carotid artery.Materials and methods: Twelve male miniature pigs were randomly divided into the model and control group (n = 6). Pigs in the model group were kept in an air-flow negative pressure chamber at 0.96 ± 0.01 kPa, and the air oxygen content, temperature, and humidity were kept at normal culture conditions in both groups. After pigs in the model group presented symptoms of OSAHS, changes in the hemodynamics and morphology of the carotid artery were analyzed using …

The purpose of this study was to investigate possible effects of anti-TNF alpha therapy on cardiorespiratory fitness and physical functional capacity of patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS). Materials and methods: Twenty-eight AS patients meeting the modified New York criteria with active disease state and an equivalent number of healthy individuals as the control were prospectively enrolled. Physical working capacity and aerobic exercise capacity of the participants were determined by using cardiopulmonary exercise tests, performed before and 4 months after initiation of anti-TNF alpha therapy. Results: The mean age of the patients was 37 ± 9.1 years, and mean duration of …
