Profiling Of 17 Y-Str Loci In Mazandaran And Gilan Provinces Of Iran, Minoo Sayyari, Ali Salehzadeh, Mohamad Amin Tabatabaiefar, Ali Abbasi
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: TheY-chromosome mainly consists of heterochromatin regions that have a father-to-son inheritance. Short tandem repeat polymorphic (STRP) markers distributed all over the chromosome provide the opportunity for investigations in forensic medicine and ancestral lineage studies. Due to the existence of wide varieties of geographical and ethnic groups in Iran, studying Y-STRP markers is necessary for further applications. Here we investigated the provinces of Mazandaran and Gilan for the first time. Materials and methods: Samples included 119 and 90 unrelated males from Mazandaran and Gilan, respectively. Using a PCR amplification kit, 17 Y-STRP markers were amplified and genotyping was conducted by …

Background/aim: Abnormal capillaroscopic findings have been reported in vasculitic syndromes such as Behçet's disease, Henoch-Schönlein purpura, and Wegener's granulomatosis. This study was conducted to define the capillaroscopic changes in patients with Takayasu arteritis (TA). Materials and methods: We studied 28 TA patients (27 females). The nail folds from the 2nd to 5th fingers on both hands were examined with video capillaroscopy for all. A patient was defined as having an abnormal capillaroscopic examination if more than 1 morphologic abnormality was present in at least 2 nail folds. Results: The median capillary density of TA patients was 9 (range: 9-11). There …

Background/aim: It is necessary to incorporate novel training modalities in medical education, especially in surgical fields, because of the limitations of cadaveric training. Traditional medical education has many drawbacks, such as residency working hour restrictions, patient safety conflicts with the learning needs, and the lack of hands-on workshops. The MedTRain3DModsim Project aimed to produce 3-dimensional (3D) medical printed models, simulations, and innovative applications for every level of medical training using novel worldwide technologies. It was aimed herein to improve the interdisciplinary and transnational approaches, and accumulate existing experience for medical education, postgraduate studies, and specialty training. Materials and methods: This …

Drugs change the levels of autoantibodies; therefore, patients who took any medication had been excluded from our study. Anti-carbamylated protein, anti-Sa, and 14-3-3eta were measured by using three different ELISA kits. Results: Median serum concentration of …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Nicotinamide N-methyltransferase (NNMT) is an enzyme that is overexpressed in malignancies. NNMT expression has not been previously studied in endometrial cancer (EC). Increased phospho-Akt (pAkt) levels in response to NNMT overexpression have been reported in in vitro studies of different cancer types. We assayed NNMT expression in primary and metastatic high-grade EC and investigated the relationship of NNMT with p53, pAkt, and survival. Materials and methods: NNMT, pAkt, and p53 expressions were assayed in 100 tissue samples of benign endometria, primary EC, and metastatic EC by immunohistochemistry. Results: The NNMT immunoreactivity score was significantly higher in primary high-grade EC …

Comparison Of Block And Pulsed Radiofrequency Of The Ganglion Impar In Coccygodynia, Ender Si̇r, Sami̇ Eksert
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Ganglion impar blockis used for the treatment of chronic coccygodynia. Pulsed radiofrequency (PRF) of the ganglion impar is a promising novel technique. The aim of this study was to determine and compare the efficacy of the blockade and PRF of the ganglion impar.Materials and methods: Thirty-nine consecutive patients diagnosed with coccygodynia and treated with a blockade or PRF of the ganglion impar were included in this retrospective study. We compared the ganglion impar block (GIB) group (n = 25) with the ganglion impar pulsed radiofrequency (GIPRF) group (n = 14) in terms of pain intensity and patient satisfaction. We …

Background/aim: Polycythemia Vera (PV) is a myeloproliferative disorder characterized by overproduction of morphologically normal red blood cells (RBCs), granulocytes, and platelets, a phenotype that is caused by a mutation (V617F) in Janus kinase 2 (JAK2). However, JAK2 V617F is also found in approximately 50% of patients with essential thrombocytosis and primary myelofibrosis, rendering its presence nonspecific as a diagnostic test. An increased red cell mass is a major criterion for the diagnosis of PV according to World Health Organization (WHO) 2016 criteria. High hemoglobin (Hgb) or Hematocrit (Hct) are universally used as indicators of an increased red cell mass for …

Serum Zinc Levels In Seborrheic Dermatitis: A Case-Control Study, Ezgi̇ Aktaş Karabay, Asli Aksu Çerman
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim:Malassezia colonization, sebaceous gland activity, hormones, immune system defects, environmental factors, and the interactions between these factors are thought to contribute to the pathogenesis of seborrheic dermatitis (SD). Zinc, an essential element, is involved in many biological processes including the ones that contribute to the development of SD. The aim of this study is to evaluate serum zinc levels in patients with SD.Materials and methods: Forty-three patients with SD and 41 healthy controls were enrolled in the study. Disease activity was assessed by the Seborrheic Dermatitis Area and Severity Index by a single dermatologist. Serum zinc levels of all subjects …
