Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: The optimal technique for airway management in patients with cervical pathology remains unclear. Intubating laryngeal mask airway devices such as LMA CTrach and LMA Fastrach have not been compared for cervical spine (C-spine) movements in the context of cervical pathology. The present study aimed to determine upper C-spine movements by radiography during intubation with different devices as well as comparing the duration and success of intubation in cervical surgery.Materials and methods: Sixty patients scheduled for elective cervical surgery were registered in this prospective, randomized study. Patients with cervical trauma/injury, previous neck surgery, and body mass index (BMI) of >35 …

Role Of Aortic Stiffness And Inflammation In The Etiology Of Young-Onset Hypertension, Serkan Gökaslan, Çi̇ğdem Özer Gökaslan, Emi̇n Demi̇rel, Sefa Çeli̇k
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Young-onset hypertension is a form of condition diagnosed in patients aged below 40. Cytokines such as interleukin (IL)-6 and also MCP-1 may play a role in the development of arterial hypertension. Aortic stiffness can be detected by measuring pulse wave velocity (PWV). We aimed to explore the relationship between inflammation and aortic stiffness and investigate their roles in the etiology of young-onset hypertension.Materials and methods: We enrolled 16 patients diagnosed with young-onset hypertension and 16 volunteers without hypertension. The plasma levels of MCP-1 and IL-6 were determined using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and quantitative enzyme-linked immunoassay, respectively. Carotid-femoral PWV …

Relationship Between Tissue And Serum Eosinophilia In Children Undergoing Adenotonsillectomy With Allergic Rhinitis, Nur Yücel Eki̇ci̇, Özgür Külahci
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Previous reports suggested that allergic/eosinophilic inflammation affects the adenoid and tonsillar tissue. The aim of this study is to evaluate and compare the tissue and serum eosinophilia in children undergoing adenotonsillectomy with allergic rhinitis.Materials and methods: The clinical registers of 125 children undergoing adenoidectomy/tonsillectomy due to adenoid/tonsil hypertrophy were examined and reviewed retrospectively. Fifty-seven children with positive skin prick test and symptoms of allergic rhinitis were included in the study as the atopic group, whereas 68 children with no allergic symptoms and negative skin prick test were included as the nonatopic group. Consequently, the total immunoglobulin E level and …

Childhood Atopic Dermatitis: Current Developments, Treatment Approaches, And Future Expectations, Pinar Gür Çeti̇nkaya, Ümi̇t Murat Şahi̇ner
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Atopic dermatitis (AD) is the most common chronic inflammatory skin disorder of childhood. Underlying factors that contribute to AD are impaired epithelial barrier, alterations in the lipid composition of the skin, immunological imbalance including increased Th2/Th1 ratio, proinflammatory cytokines, decreased T regulatory cells, genetic mutations, and epigenetic alterations. Atopic dermatitis is a multifactorial disease with a particularly complicated pathophysiology. Discoveries to date may be considered the tip of the iceberg, and the increasing number of studies in this field indicate that there are many points to be elucidated in AD pathophysiology. In this review, we aimed to illustrate the current …

Background/aim: Community-onset urinary tract infections(UTIs) caused by extended-spectrum ß-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli have increased in many parts of the world. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and risk factors for community-onset UTI caused by ESBL-producing E. coli.Materials and methods: This prospective cohort study was conducted between January 2012 and March 2014 in cases of community-onset UTI caused by E. coli. Patients with UTI due to ESBL-producing E. coli and patients with UTI due to non-ESBL-producing E. coliwere compared to identify risk factors for ESBL-producing E. coli in the community. Results: A total of 305 patients (116 males [46.4%]; mean age: …

Background/aim: Since the nature of ischemia/reperfusion (IR)-induced tissue damage is multifactorial and complex, in the current study, the effects of multiple treatment strategies via concomitant administration of erythropoietin (EPO) and N-acetylcysteine (NAC) with an ischemic preconditioning (IPC) regimen on renal IR injury were examined.Materials and methods: Thirty male Wistar rats were subjected to bilateral occlusion of the renal pedicles for 50 min followed by reperfusion. EPO (1000 IU/kg) was administered for 3 days, as well as IPC before the IR and NAC (150 mg/kg) administration for 4 days after IR. The animals were randomly allocated into 6 groups (n = …

Background/aim:To examine the effects of active and passive smoking on perioperative anesthetic and analgesic consumption. Materials and methods: Patients were divided into three groups: group S, smokers; group PS, passive smokers; and group NS, individuals who did not have a history of smoking and were not exposed to smoke. All patients underwent the standard total intravenous anesthesia method. The primary endpoint of this study was determination of the total amount of propofol and remifentanil consumed. Results: The amount of propofol used in induction of anesthesia was significantly higher in group S compared to groups PS and NS. Moreover, the total …
