Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Giant ventral incisional hernias (GVIHs) are hard to manage for surgeons. This problem was resolved in 1990 with the components separation technique (CST). We aimed to compare endoscopic and conventional CST for GVIHs and find a new anthropometric calculation.Materials and methods: In this prospective nonrandomized clinical trial, 21 patients were treated with endoscopic or conventional CST between 2012 and 2016. Eight patients (38.1%) were operated endoscopically and 13 (61.9%) conventionally on the basis of preoperative tomography results, hernia surface area (HSA), number of recent abdominal operations, comorbidities, and the presence or history of ostomy. Determination Of Liver Fibrosis Stages In Egyptian Chronic Hepatitis B Patients By A Noninvasive Tool, Waleed Serag, Magdy Mahmoud, Basem Eysa, Sara Mahmoud

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is the leading cause of liver fibrosis (LF). The prognosis and management of patients with chronic hepatitis B virus depend on the amount and progression of liver fibrosis. Angiopoietin-like protein 2 (Angptl2) is not only a chronic inflammatory mediator, but also a tissue-remodeling factor. The aim of this study is to explore the predictive value of Angptl2 in different fibrosis stages in patients chronically infected with HBV. Materials and methods: Eighty patients with chronic HBV infection undergoing Fibroscan were included. Serum concentrations of Angptl2 were detected using a commercial ELISA kit. Results: Angptl2 levels were …

Demographic, anthropometric, and biochemical data were recorded both before parathyroidectomy and 6 months after the procedure. Epicardial fat thickness was measured by transthoracic echocardiography. Results: Mean age …

Background/aim: The most common causes of thyrotoxicosis include Graves' disease (GD), toxic multinodular goiter (TMNG), toxic adenoma (TA), and subacute granulomatous thyroiditis (SAT). In our study, we aimed to see whether neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and mean platelet volume (MPV) may be helpful in the differential diagnosis of these diseases.Materials and methods: We retrospectively analyzed the hospital records of the Endocrinology Clinic of our hospital between 2016 and 2019. We included data from 66 GD, 37 TA, and 35 SAT patients. We compared the data with those of 35 healthy subjects as controls. Results: NLR, MLR, …

The Effect Of N-Acetylcysteine On Inflammation And Oxidative Stress In Cisplatin-Induced Nephrotoxicity: A Rat Model, İnayet Güntürk, Cevat Yazici, Sema Kader Köse, Fatma Dağli, Bi̇lal Yücel, Arzu Hanim Yay

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/Aim: Cisplatin is a highly effective chemotherapeutic agent used in the treatment of solid organ cancers. Besides its chemotherapeutic effectiveness, cisplatin administration is associated with numerous side effects. Of those, the most clinically significant and common effect is nephrotoxicity. Recent studies reported that oxidative stress and inflammation are probably the most important mechanisms that contribute to the nephrotoxicity. N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is an antioxidant and antiinflammatory agent. In the present study, the effects of NAC on cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity were investigated. Materials and methods: Rats were divided into four groups each including eight rats: CONT, NAC-250, CP, and CP+NAC. Rats in experimental …
