There are only a few case reports and case series in the literature. We have aimed to increase the success rate by taking the serratus fascia flaps together with some muscle tissue for the repair of extremity tissue defects. Materials and methods: Between 2006 and 2015, 12 free serratus musculofascial flaps (FSMFFs) were transferred to 11 patients (8 males, 3 females) who had tissue shallow defects of the extremities due to different etiologic factors. The mean age was …

Propofol provides adequate sedation and amnesia at subhypnotic doses, but safe guarding the patient's airway is important for preventing respiratory depression or hypoxic events. This study compared sedation levels, operator satisfaction, intraoperative and recovery characteristics using sevoflurane with nasal mask and propofol in ERCP. Material and methods: Sixty-one patients underwent ERCP (Group I: propofol, n = 31; Group II, sevoflurane, n = 30), with sedation controlled by the Ramsay sedation scale (RSS). The patients' demographic data, procedure length, overall drug dose, hemodynamic changes, duration of recovery and Aldrete scores during recovery …

Background/aim: Basal level of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), estradiol (E2), and antral follicle count are used as predictors of ovarian reserve before starting ovulation induction. We aimed to investigate the predictor potential of early follicular phase FSH/LH ratio on controlled ovarian hyperstimulation-intracytoplasmic sperm injection (COH-ICSI) cycle outcomes. Materials and methods: This retrospective cohort study was conducted with 648 COH-ICSI cycles performed between 2012 and 2014. Cycles were classified according to their basal FSH/LH ratio, group 1(G1) = FSH/LH ratio < 2, N = 473 and group 2(G2) = FSH/LH ratio ∠ 2, N = 175. Demographic characteristics and stimulation parameters were evaluated. Retrieved total oocyte count (TOC), mature oocyte count (MOC), transferred embryo number, and pregnancy results were obtained and transferred to computer by SPSS 21.0 programme. Results: TOC and MOC of G1 were significantly higher than those of G2. The total gonadotrophin doses of G2 were significantly higher than G1. There was no significant difference between groups for transferred embryo number. Pregnancy and live birth rates were similar in both groups. Conclusion: In our population, increased FSH/LH ratio did not affect the rates of pregnancy and live birth negatively.

Evaluation Of Cardiovascular Autonomic Dysfunction According To Heart Rate Turbulenceand Variability In Patients With Relapsing Remitting Multiple Sclerosis, Serkan Gökaslan, Hayri̇ Demi̇rbaş, Çi̇ğdem Özer Gökaslan
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease characterized by neurodegeneration or demyelination; the relapsing-remitting phase of MS is characterized by acute exacerbation of disease activity. The most commonly used noninvasive approach to assess autonomic function is the determination of heart rate turbulence (HRT) and heart rate variability (HRV). The aim of this study was to evaluate the presence of cardiovascular autonomic dysfunction using HRT and HRV parameters determined via 24-h Holter ECG monitoring in patients with relapsing-remitting MS without known heart disease. Materials and methods: The study included 26 patients diagnosed with relapsing-remitting MS and 22 age- and sex-matched …

Background/aim: Aspartame (APM, L-aspartyl-L-phenylalanine methylester) is a low-calorie, nonsaccharide artificial sweetener widely used in foods and beverages. When metabolized by the body, APM is broken down into aspartic acid, phenylalanine amino acids, and a third substance, methanol. Since the amino acid phenylalanine serves as a neurotransmitter building block affecting the brain, and methanol is converted into toxic formaldehyde, APM has deleterious effects on the body and brain. Thus, its safety and, toxicity have been the subjects of concern ever since it was first discovered. Although many studies have been performed on it, due to the presence of conflicting data in …

Physiological And Pharmacological Roles Of Melatonin In The Pathophysiologicalcomponents Of Cellular Injury After Ischemic Stroke, Ertuğrul Kiliç, Berrak Çağlayan, Mustafa Caglar Beker
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Apart from its metabolic or physiological functions, melatonin has a potent cytoprotective activity in the physiological and pathological conditions. It is synthetized by the pineal gland and released into the blood circulation but particularly cerebrospinal fluid in a circadian manner. It can also easily diffuse through cellular membranes due its small size and lipophilic structure. Its cytoprotective activity has been linked to its potent free radical scavenger activity with the desirable characteristics of a clinically- reliable antioxidant. Melatonin detoxifies oxygen and nitrogen-based free radicals and oxidizing agents, including the highly toxic hydroxyl-and peroxynitrite radicals, initiating cellular damage. However, the cytoprotective …

We still do not know the cause(s) of Behçet syndrome. Most probably several, separate disease mechanisms are involved. I, like some others, propose we call it not a disease but a syndrome, a construct with a list of strong and weak elements. I like to think that this frank admission of our ignorance of its cause(s) will be an important semantic stimulus for more meaningful research.
