Background/aim: The male sling operation and artificial urinary sphincter implantation are common methods for treating urinary incontinence. However, there are some drawbacks to these methods such as infection, urethral erosion, pain, inefficiency, and the technical difficulty of the operations. Here we describe a new device we have named the Turkish Continence Device (TCD) which has advantages over these other methods. The aim of this study was perform experiments with the TCD prototype in vivo and ex vivo to determine efficiency, convenience of implantation, and negative effects.Materials and methods: We implanted the prototype device in male goats and sheep, compressing the …

Background/aim: Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) is a very rare clonal hematopoietic stem cell disease characterized by chronic hemolytic anemia and thrombosis. We report data from a study of the occurrence of PNH among patients with idiopathic portal vein thrombosis (PVT). Materials and methods: Patients who were followed up with the diagnosis of idiopathic PVT were enrolled into this study. Those with laboratory and/or imaging evidence of any local or systemic factor that could lead to PVT were excluded. PNH clone was examined in all patients using established FLAER methodology. Results: A total of 112 patients (42 males and 70 females), none …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
To the Editor,We read with great interest the article entitled "An evaluation of the effects of caffeic acid phenethyl ester and Ankaferd blood stopper on secondary wound healing of oral mucosal tissue", published recently in the Journal[1]. The authors indicated that Ankaferd Hemostat (Ankaferd Blood Stopper, ABS) and caffeic acid phenethyl ester had positive effects on the oral wound healing process. Since ABS has already been used in dental surgery for years, it is known as not irritable to the oral mucosa [2]. ABS antibacterial, antiinfective, and cellular features are also established [3]. More importantly, ABS is clinically effective in …

Development Of Albumin Macroinitiator For Polymers To Use In Dna Origami Coating, Aykut Bi̇li̇r, Ezgi̇ Emül, Necdet Sağlam
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: DNA nanostructures have many advantages over polymers and lipid based drug delivery agents such as biodegradability and biocompatibility. However their transfection rates and stability still limit their widely use in nanomedicine. In this study highly versatile and straightforward albumin coating preparation method is showed for DNA nanostructures.Materials and methods: N-methylolmaleimide was esterified with a-bromoisobutyrl bromide (BiBB) to achive bromine functional structure. Then it was attached to bovine serum albumin (BSA) via cysteine-maleimide bond further to use as macroinitiator for atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Cationic polymers can be synthesized from this end further to use as binding domain for …
