Background/aim : Advanced chronic periodontitis is observed rarely in acromegaly. Periodontal tissue including the alveolar bone is seemed to be spared from the systemic metabolic derangements of bone in this patient population. Chronic elevation of growth hormone, IGF-1, and bone morphogenetic proteins may play a role in periodontal tissue regeneration in acromegalics. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the potential roles of local gingival bone morphogenetic proteins (BMP) in periodontal tissue pathology in acromegaly. Materials and methods: Thirty-five patients with acromegaly and 22 healthy subjects were recruited. All the participants were examined by the same periodontologist for the diagnosis …

Background/aim: Cystic fibrosis is an autosomal recessive disease with a defect in mucociliary activity that is characterized by recurrent pulmonary infections. Bacterial agents frequently implicated in airway colonization are Haemophilus influenzae, Staphylococcus spp., and Pseudomonas spp. Fungal isolation from sputum is common in adults. However, growth of fungal agent only in sputum culture in patients with cystic fibrosis is insufficient for the diagnosis of fungal diseases. There is limited data about the clinical significance of fungal isolation in sputum cultures. The aim of the study was to investigate the clinical outcomes andsignificance of fungal isolation from sputum samples in adult …

Background/aim: To investigate the optimal protocol for frozen-thawed embryo transfer (FET) cycles in patients who previously had a cycle cancellation due to uterine peristalsis (UP). Materials and methods: Thirty-four patients with previous embryo transfer (ET) cancellation due to UP during artificial cycle (AC) were included retrospectively. In the proceeding cycle, endometrium was prepared with AC (n: 23) in AC-FET group or with stimulated cycle that contains letrozole (L) (n: 11) in L-FET group. Intravenous bolus dose of 6.75 mg atosiban (Tractocile; Ferring Pharmaceuticals, Switzerland) injection was performed to all patients of AC-FET group due to UP ≥ 4/min on the …

Background/aim: Although many headache patients report that the frequency and severity of attacks vary according to the season or weather in clinical practice, the relationship between the characteristics of the attacks and the weather is not very clear in episodic headaches. We aimed to compare the effects of weather variables (temperature, wind speed, wind direction, humidity, pressure, ultraviolet index, and sunshine duration) on episodic migraine (EM) and episodic tension-type headache (ETTH) attacks (incidence, duration, and severity). Materials and methods: Fifty patients with EM and fifty patients with ETTH diagnosed according to International Classification of Headache Disorders-II are included in the …
