Circulating Mir-29c-3p Is Downregulated In Patients With Acromegaly, Hakan Korkmaz, Kuyaş Heki̇mler Öztürk, Bora Torus

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: miRNAs control various biological functions, such as cell proliferation, differentiation, signaling pathways, apoptosis and metabolism. Recently, it has been shown that there is a relationship between changes in miRNA expression and the development of acromegaly. Studies are needed to identify new disease-specific miRNAs. The aim of the current study is to evaluate plasma miR-29c-3p, miR-31-5p and miR-18a-5p steady-state levels in acromegaly. Another aim is to investigate whether there is a difference in the levels of these miRNAs in patients with inadequate control and controlled acromegaly with somatostatin analog (SSA) therapy. These miRNAs targeting the IGF-1 gene were determined by …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) affected the whole world in a short time. One of the most influential public health initiatives modern medicine has to offer, the vaccine has become even more important as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to worsen worldwide. Many vaccine trials were launched during the COVID-19 pandemic, and these vaccines were widely used around the world, offering realistic hope for ending the pandemic. Allergic reactions to vaccines were reported shortly after their approval. These reactions, in general, are rare, but, in some circumstances, they can be serious. Allergy to vaccines can occur because of either the active vaccine …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Compared to healthy controls, mean platelet volume (MPV) is frequently higher in patients with Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) but lower in AA amyloidosis patients. The reason for the difference in MPV levels in FMF patients with and without AA amyloidosis is unclear. The aim of the study was to determine whether low MPV is unique to AA amyloidosis or MPV is similarly low in all glomerular diseases as a result of proteinuria and/or renal dysfunction. Materials and methods: We compared pre-biopsy MPV levels of patients with AA amyloidosis secondary to FMF, to MPV levels of patients with membranous glomerulonephritis, …

Background/aim: With the increased experience in living donor liver transplantation (LDLT), it has been adopted for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), with emerging discussions of criteria beyond tumor size and number. In contrast to deceased donor liver transplantation (DDLT), recipient selection for LDLT is not limited by organ allocation systems. We discuss herein the assessment, criteria, and experience with liver transplantation (LT) in HCC cases at a high-volume LDLT center. Material and methods: Between August 2006 and December 2017, 191 adult LT HCC recipients with at least one-year follow-up were retrospectively analyzed. Results: In 191 patients, one-, three- and …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Activation-induced cytidine deaminase (AID) enables antibody diversity in B lymphocytes. It may also have an effect on MDS pathogenesis by causing somatic mutations and by inducing epigenetic changes in myeloid cells. This study aimed to compare AID expression of MDS patients with healthy controls, of MDS patients in different risk groups, and of MDS patients according to their treatment. Materials and methods: Total RNA was isolated and complementary DNA (cDNA) was transcribed from the peripheral blood samples of MDS patients and healthy controls. AID and the reference gene HPRT1 were analyzed using quantitative real-time PCR (QRT-PCR). AID expression relative …

Assessment Of Erythrocyte Morphology In Patients With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A Pilotstudy Of Electron Microscopy-Based Analysis In Relation To Healthy Controls, Tülay Mortaş, Şenay Arikan Durmaz, Şaban Cem Sezen, Yasemi̇n Savranlar Jan 2021

Assessment Of Erythrocyte Morphology In Patients With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A Pilotstudy Of Electron Microscopy-Based Analysis In Relation To Healthy Controls, Tülay Mortaş, Şenay Arikan Durmaz, Şaban Cem Sezen, Yasemi̇n Savranlar

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: The present study aimed to assess erythrocyte morphology in newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus patients using scanning electron microscopy. Materials and methods: In total, 30 patients admitted to endocrine outpatient clinics were included in the study. The patients were divided into two groups according to their fasting blood glucose levels: type 2 diabetes mellitus (n = 15, fasting blood glucose levels ≥ 126 mg/dL) and control (n = 15, fasting blood glucose levels < 99 mg/dL). The patient's demographic characteristics, haemoglobin A1c levels, and scanning electron microscopy findings regarding erythrocyte morphology were recorded. Results: There was no significant difference between the control and type 2 diabetes mellitus group in terms of the participants' age (51.13 ± 8.53 vs. 50.33 ± 8.72 years, p = 0.8) and the male/female ratio (9/6 vs. 9/6). In the control group, discocytes were abundant, echinocytes were rare, and spherocytes were absent. On the other hand, discocytes were less common and echinocyte-shaped erythrocytes were more common in the type 2 diabetes mellitus group than in the control group. In addition, spherocytes were detected in the type 2 diabetes mellitus group. Moreover, the diameter of discocytes was significantly lower (p = 0.014), and blood glucose and haemoglobin A1c levels were significantly higher (p < 0.05 for both) in the type 2 diabetes mellitus group than in the control group. Conclusion: Our findings indicate that high glucose levels in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients lead to significant alterations in erythrocyte morphology, including decreased erythrocyte deformability and the formation of echinocytes and spherocytes due to eryptosis. The possibility of decreased erythrocyte deformability due to excessive eryptosis may disturb microcirculation in newly diagnosed, treatment-naïve type 2 diabetes mellitus patients who do not have any complications.

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Orbital exenteration (OE) is one of the most disfiguring procedures leading to significant deformity. Defect reconstruction is challenging, especially in elderly patients. Herein, experiences with orbital exenteration and primary reconstruction with lateral frontal galeal-cutaneous flap based on superficial temporal artery were reviewed. Materials and methods: Data on patients treated for nonmelanoma skin cancer invading the orbit during a 10-year period were analyzed. The patient demographics, tumor features, reconstructive techniques used, complications, and survival were recorded with a median follow-up of 27.5 months. Results: Included in the study were 26 patients in whom OE was performed, comprising 14 males and …

Background/aim: Although sonoelastography is applied in assessment of many organs, studies for evaluation of muscles are very few in number and are mostly limited to adults. With this prospective study, we aimed to evaluate the value of sonoelastography in assessment of influenza related benign acute myositis in children. Materials and methods: This study enrolled 25 patients with a clinical diagnosis of benign acute childhood myositis (BACM) and 25 age and sex-matched healthy controls. All patients presented to our emergency department with the complaint of inability to walk and had increased serum creatine kinase (CK) levels. All patients underwent strain elastography …
