It is the intention in this paper to outline for general use the information that should be obtained in a survey for a proposed bridge in order that it may be designed with full knowledge of the conditions it must meet satisfactorily in service. The Manuals herein are written for conditions that exist in the Mississippi Basin and particularly the North Central States but will find general application with minor changes.

"The so-termed: "Multiple", or "Scallop-Arched" dam, as its name implies, is one composed of a series of arches, either semi-circular or segmental in plan. These arches were first vertical but were later inclined downstream, when the engineers recognized the value of the weight of water in increasing the resisting moment. The thrust of these arches, due to the water pressure and the weight of the arch itself, is transmitted directly to the buttresses. To produce a maximum condition of loading on the lower floors I have taken up the design of a warehouse which is to carry a live and impact load of 400# per sq. ft., plus the dead load on each of the twelve floors.
