Autonomous Search And Rescue: Real-Time Drone And Robotic Dog Integration, Robert Alexander
Autonomous Search And Rescue: Real-Time Drone And Robotic Dog Integration, Robert Alexander
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (MS) Theses
Common robotic navigation techniques often utilize GPS to set up the robot’s reference frame, which is not possible in environments, such as indoor facilities, underground passages, and disaster zones, where GPS is not available. This research explores the integration of a Boston Dynamics Spot robot with a Tello drone to form a non-GPS-based autonomous navigation system. By leveraging coordinate transformation logic, this study enables real-time aerial reconnaissance and ground-based waypoint navigation without reliance on GPS. The methodology includes software development using the Spot SDK and Tello APIs, a virtual networked solution for integration, and an experimental setup to validate navigation …
Implementation Of Residual Tandem Neural Networks For Photonic Inverse Design, Ponthea A. Zahraii
Implementation Of Residual Tandem Neural Networks For Photonic Inverse Design, Ponthea A. Zahraii
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (MS) Theses
Deep-learning approaches can greatly benefit the modeling and design of nanophotonic and optical structures. Traditional full-wave simulations are time and resource-intensive, which can act as a bottleneck in photonic design. On the other hand, deep-learning approaches for designing the response of nanophotonic geometries can be computationally inexpensive and produce accurate and efficient results. In this project, we specifically investigate the case of optical forces near meta-structures. We propose using an inverse design approach with residual blocks to account for the deep nature of this architecture and inherently address the non-uniqueness problem. A tandem approach, which consists of two interconnected models, …

The Trials And Tribulations Of Building An Ebike From Recycled Parts, Olivia Conrady
Senior Honors Projects
The United States is far from being “walkable” in most suburban areas. Though public transportation has grown in its infrastructure in some large cities, it is far from sufficient. As a result of this, millions of people drive their cars every single day -- a practice that is unsustainable and becoming an increasingly evident issue. One possible solution that has become popular is the use of electric bicycles, since they are less physically taxing than a normal bike and allow for quicker transport. Though electric bicycles have been on the rise, they are still well outside of many people’s budget, …

Theses and Dissertations
The magnetic joint actuator is a relatively recent research technology that expands on the brushless DC motor to encompass rotation in three degrees-of-freedom. These actuators involve a stator with a series of electromagnetic coils oriented normal to a spherical permanent magnet rotor which can be controlled by modulating the current of the stator coils. The development of a magnetic joint actuator that operates without a physical connection between the stator and the rotor has wide applications for robotics in dust-sensitive environments, where a device with bearings would otherwise falter. This work details the design, sensing, and control of such a …

De Novo Design Of Ablative Polymers For Aerospace Thermal Protection Systems Through An Integrated Ai-Theory-Experiment Approach, Rene Damaso Boisseau
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Novolac phenolic resin (NPR) is a widely used polymeric ablative material (PAM) for thermal protection systems (TPS) due to its high thermal decomposition temperature (TD, 500â?¯Â°C) and char yield (YC, 55â?¯wt%). However, its drawbacks (including high thermal conductivity, low mechanical properties and water uptake) prompt the need for improved PAMs. This study explores the pyrolysis behavior and char-forming capabilities of NPR and a potential alternative PAM, poly(1,6-dimethyl phenol) (PPO), through both theoretical and experimental approaches. A graph neural network (GNN) was developed to predict structure-property relationships, revealing that benzyl group positioning and oxygen atom placement significantly influence YC. PPO's para-positioned …

Towards Mitigation Of The Light Network Load Performance Penalty Of The Network Link Outlier Factor (Nlof), Jaime Merin Guzman
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Detecting and localizing faults in communication networks is critical to maintaining reliable and efficient network operations. The Network Link Outlier Factor with Most Likely Link (NLOF: MLL) algorithm has demonstrated its potential to automate this task but suffers from significant performance degradation under low network load conditions, where limited network flow data reduces its ability to localize faults. This thesis proposes and evaluates the performance of a synthetic traffic generation algorithm to be used with NLOF:MLL. This algorithm strategically injects synthetic flows that supplement the insufficient real network flows, thereby improving NLOF:MLL's performance under low-load conditions. Specifically, we select network …

Insert Creation To Mimic Blood Vessels In Gel Phantoms, Courtney Bloom
Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Gel phantoms are commonly used in research settings due to their ability to mimic soft tissue. Creating these phantoms usually involves 3D printing an insert, embedding it in gel, and then washing the insert out. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is typically used as the insert material, but it often swells and deforms the gel during the washout process. Aquapour, a water-soluble material, was investigated as a potential replacement for PVA. Unlike PVA, Aquapour comes in a powdered form that can be mixed with water to create a castable slurry. To create molds to cast Aquapour, SolidWorks was used to design two …

This study investigated the role of PIEZO1 in MSC osteogenesis through pharmacological activation using YODA1 and gene silencing via siRNA. Human bone marrow-derived MSCs were cultured and induced for osteogenic differentiation under varying concentrations and durations of YODA1 treatment. Alizarin …
Efficacy Of Mitophagy Inhibition As A Potentiating Agent For Conventional Chemotherapy, Morghan Relich, Shelby Bess
Efficacy Of Mitophagy Inhibition As A Potentiating Agent For Conventional Chemotherapy, Morghan Relich, Shelby Bess
Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Cancer is a result of uncontrolled growth and reproduction of cells. Damaged or abnormal cells grow and multiply when they should not and in turn the cells continue to proliferate and metastasize. Malignant cells rely on functional mitochondria for proliferation, metastasis, and survival. These mitochondria maintain a functional mitochondrial network through a quality control mechanism called mitophagy. Mitophagy is a conserved intracellular process to maintain quality control and remove damaged mitochondria.
Previous research has been done to examine the effects of mitophagy in tumor cells, as well as the effects of mitophagy inhibition. One focus of current research has been …
Wind-Induced Gravel Blow-Off: Experimental Investigations And Predictive Modeling For Resilient Roof Design, Md Safwan Ahsanullah
Wind-Induced Gravel Blow-Off: Experimental Investigations And Predictive Modeling For Resilient Roof Design, Md Safwan Ahsanullah
All Dissertations
Roof gravel blow-off during severe windstorms is a major hazard, leading to roof damage and significant downwind impacts. Understanding the initiation mechanisms for gravel blow-off is critical for improving building design and mitigating windborne debris risks. Existing experimental data on the wind speed required to initiate gravel blow-off have been collected from high-speed, full-scale tests at wind tunnels. While these tests form the basis of current design guidelines, they are expensive and can lack generalizability. As a result, rooftop gravel is frequently blown off at wind speeds below the design thresholds. This dissertation investigates the onset of rooftop gravel motion, …

Unstructured meshes are widely used to represent complex shapes and data in visualization tasks, such as medical imaging, engineering design, and geometric modeling. However, their unevenly distributed elements make them memory-intensive and time-consuming to process, especially as mesh sizes grow. This research focuses on improving the efficiency of processing large unstructured meshes by reducing memory usage and speeding up computations. This doctoral dissertation introduces three methods to address these challenges. The first approach divides the mesh into smaller partitions and processes it piece-by-piece, reducing memory requirements by up to 10 times. The second approach uses the processor's parallel computing capabilities …
Decomposition And Coordination For Multiobjective Optimization: A Framework And Methodology, Philip J. De Castro
Decomposition And Coordination For Multiobjective Optimization: A Framework And Methodology, Philip J. De Castro
All Dissertations
In this work, we consider finding Pareto efficient solutions for complex multiobjective optimization problems (MOPs). Complex MOPs are unique in the literature because they have many more objective functions than is typically considered. In fact, such complex MOPs will have 30+ objective functions. This large problem size presents computational and coginitive difficulties. Computationally, standard techniques for solving MOPs are often ineffective and cognitively it is difficult for a decision maker (DM) to handle all of the information provided in such a large problem. To address these challenges, we develop a decomposition and coordination framework. This framework will allow us to …
