Front Dynamics And Entrainment Of Finite Circular Gravity Currents On An Unbounded Uniform Slope, Nadim Zgheib, A. Ooi, S. Balachandar
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
We report on the dynamics of circular finite-release Boussinesq gravity currents on a uniform slope. The study comprises a series of highly resolved direct numerical simulations for a range of slope angles between 5∘ and 20∘ . The simulations were fixed at Reynolds number Re=5000 for all slopes considered. The temporal evolution of the front is compared to available experimental data. One of the interesting aspects of this study is the detection of a converging flow towards the centre of the gravity current. This converging flow is a result of the finite volume of the release coupled with the presence …
Fabrication Of Hybrid Optical Electrical Platforms For Potential Applications In Neuromodulation, Aneesha Kondapi
Fabrication Of Hybrid Optical Electrical Platforms For Potential Applications In Neuromodulation, Aneesha Kondapi
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
State-of-the art neuromodulators are bulky, and they are mostly fabricated on rigid substrates. Furthermore, they are not provided with a feedback control loop re- sulting in undesired off-target effects. This thesis paves the way for fabrication of lightweight neural interfaces with the capability to implement closed-loop controlled neuromodulation down to a single-cell resolution. In this work, an approach based on hybrid optical-electrical devices to implement neuromodulation is presented. The rationale of this choice, design illustration, fabrication and characterization is discussed. In addition, a proof-of-concept neural interface is illustrated. Specif- ically, hybrid optical-electrical devices are developed based on inorganic thin films, …
Hybrid System Identification Of Manual Tracking Submovements In Parkinson's Disease, Carlos Gonzalez
Hybrid System Identification Of Manual Tracking Submovements In Parkinson's Disease, Carlos Gonzalez
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
Seemingly smooth motions in manual tracking, (e.g., following a moving target with a joystick input) are actually sequences of submovements: short, open-loop motions that have been previously learned. In Parkinson's disease, a neurodegenerative movement disorder, characterizations of motor performance can yield insight into underlying neurological mechanisms and therefore into potential treatment strategies. We focus on characterizing submovements through Hybrid System Identification, in which the dynamics of each submovement, the mode sequence and timing, and switching mechanisms are all unknown. We describe an initialization that provides a mode sequence and estimate of the dynamics of submovements, then apply hybrid optimization techniques …
Distributed Cognitive Rat Selection In 5g Heterogeneous Networks: A Machine Learning Approach, Juan Samuel Perez Rodriguez
Distributed Cognitive Rat Selection In 5g Heterogeneous Networks: A Machine Learning Approach, Juan Samuel Perez Rodriguez
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
The leading role of the HetNet (Heterogeneous Networks) strategy as the key Radio Access Network (RAN) architecture for future 5G networks poses serious challenges to the current cell selection mechanisms used in cellular networks. The max-SINR algorithm, although effective historically for performing the most essential networking function of wireless networks, is inefficient at best and obsolete at worst in 5G HetNets. The foreseen embarrassment of riches and diversified propagation characteristics of network attachment points spanning multiple Radio Access Technologies (RAT) requires novel and creative context-aware system designs. The association and routing decisions, in the context of single-RAT or multi-RAT connections, …
Wafer Level Characterization Of Infrared Detectors, Teressa Rose Specht
Wafer Level Characterization Of Infrared Detectors, Teressa Rose Specht
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
Thermal detector technology such as microbolometers have become more commercially available and affordable in the past five years primarily driven by a manufacturable wafer level fabrication process for these detectors. A recent DARPA program called Wafer level Infrared Detectors (WIRED) is exploring new integration schemes for developing low cost photonic detectors, which have higher speed and sensitivity compared to thermal detectors. Such efforts will require wafer level characterization of photonic detectors with rapid throughput of figures of merit. This thesis compares the performance of mid-wave infrared (MWIR) photonic detectors using a conventional cryostat and a micro-manipulator probe station to extract …
Remote Vibration Estimation Using Displaced Phase Center Antenna Sar In A Strong Clutter Environment, Justin Campbell
Remote Vibration Estimation Using Displaced Phase Center Antenna Sar In A Strong Clutter Environment, Justin Campbell
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is a ubiquitous remote sensing platform that is used for numerous applications. In its most common con\ufb01guration, SAR produces a high resolution, two-dimensional image of a scene of interest. An underlying assumption when creating this high resolution image is that all targets in the ground scene are stationary throughout the duration of the image collection. If a target is not static, but instead vibrating, it introduces a modulation on the returned radar signal termed the micro-Doppler e\ufb00ect. The ability to estimate the targets vibration frequency and vibration amplitude by exploiting the micro-Doppler e\ufb00ect, all while in …
Hypernasal Speech Analysis Via Emperical Mode Decomposition And The Teager-Kasiser Energy Operator, Christopher De La Cruz
Hypernasal Speech Analysis Via Emperical Mode Decomposition And The Teager-Kasiser Energy Operator, Christopher De La Cruz
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
In the area of speech science, one particular problem of importance has been to develop a clear method for detecting hypernasality in speech. For speech pathologists, hypernsality is a critical diagnostic used for judging the severity of velopharyngeal (nasal cavity/mouth separation) inadequacy in children with a cleft lip or cleft palate condition. For physicians and particularly neurologists, these same velopharyngeal inadequacies are believed to be linked to nervous system disorders such as Alzheimers disease and particularly Parkinson's disease. One can therefore envision the need to not only find a reliable method for detecting hypernasality, but to also quantify the level …
Machine Learning Approach To Forecast Global Solar Radiation Time Series, Guillermo Terren-Serrano
Machine Learning Approach To Forecast Global Solar Radiation Time Series, Guillermo Terren-Serrano
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
The integration of Renewable Energy (RE) into Power Systems brings new challenges to the Smart Grids (SG) technologies. The generation output from renewable sources generally depends on the atmospheric conditions. This fact causes intermittences on the power output from renewable source, and hence the power quality of the grid is directly affected by atmospheric phenomena. The increasing advances on technologies for energy storage open a track to the Energy Management (EM). Therefore, the power output from a renewable source can be stored or dispatched in a particular time-instant in order to meet the demand. Scheduling Demand Respond (DR) action on …
Analysis Of Performance And Power Aspects Of Hypervisors In Soft Real-Time Embedded Systems, John Guthrie
Analysis Of Performance And Power Aspects Of Hypervisors In Soft Real-Time Embedded Systems, John Guthrie
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
The exponential growth of malware designed to attack soft real-time embedded systems has necessitated solutions to secure these systems. Hypervisors are a solution, but the overhead imposed by them needs to be quantitatively understood. Experiments were conducted to quantify the overhead hypervisors impose on soft real-time embedded systems. A soft real-time computer vision algorithm was executed, with average and worst-case execution times measured as well as the average power consumption. These experiments were conducted with two hypervisors and a control configuration. The experiments showed that each hypervisor imposed differing amounts of overhead, with one achieving near native performance and the …

Spatially Explicit Life Cycle Assessment: Opportunities And Challenges Of Wastewater-Based Algal Biofuels In The United States, Javad Roostaei, Yongli Zhang
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research Publications
This work presented a Spatially-Explicit-High-Resolution Life Cycle Assessment (SEHR-LCA) model for wastewater-based algal biofuel production, by integrating life cycle assessment, GIS analysis, and site-specific Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs) data analysis. Wastewater resources, land availability, and meteorological variation were analyzed for algae cultivation. Three pathways, Microwave Pyrolysis, hydrothermal liquefaction, and lipid extraction were modeled for bio-oil conversion. This model enables the assessment of seasonal and site-specific variations in productivity and environmental impacts of wastewater-based algal bio-oil across the whole U.S. Model results indicate that wastewater-based algal bio-oil can provide an opportunity to increase national biofuel output. The potential production of algal …

A revolutionary effort to seek fundamental improvement of 802.11, known as IEEE 802.11ax, has been approved to deliver the next-generation wireless local area network (WLAN) technologies. In WLANs, medium access control protocol is the key component that enables efficient sharing the common radio channel while satisfying the quality of service (QoS) requirements for multimedia applications. With the new physical layer design and subsequent new medium access control functions under more demands on QoS and user experience, in this paper, we first survey the QoS support in legacy 802.11. Then, we summarize the IEEE 802.11ax standardization activities in progress and present …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Advancements in microelectromechanical system (MEMS) technology over the last several decades has been a driving force behind miniaturizing and improving sensor designs. In this work, a specialized cantilever pressure sensor was designed, modeled, and fabricated to investigate the photoacoustic (PA) response of gases to terahertz (THz) radiation under low-vacuum conditions associated with high-resolution spectroscopy. Microfabricated cantilever devices made using silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafers were tested in a custom-built test chamber in this first ever demonstration of a cantilever-based PA chemical sensor and spectroscopy system in the THz frequency regime. The THz radiation source was amplitude modulated to excite acoustic waves in …
Robust Speaker Recognition In The Presence Of Speech Coding Distortion, Robert Walter Mudrosky
Robust Speaker Recognition In The Presence Of Speech Coding Distortion, Robert Walter Mudrosky
Theses and Dissertations
For wireless remote access security, forensics, border control and surveillance applications, there is an emerging need for biometric speaker recognition systems to be robust to speech coding distortion. This thesis examines the robustness issue for three coders, namely, the ITU-T 6.3 kilobits per second (kbps) G.723.1, the ITU-T 8 kbps G.729 and the 12.2 kbps 3GPP GSM-AMR coder. Both speaker identification (SI) and speaker verification (SV) systems are considered and use a Gaussian mixture model (GMM) classifier. The systems are trained on clean speech and tested on the decoded speech. To mitigate the performance loss due to mismatched training and …

Sensitivity Studies On The Shear Lag Parameter Β Using Analytical And Numerical Techniques, George Thomas Avery
Theses and Dissertations
The strength of fiber-reinforced composites is dependent on the strength of the fiber-matrix interface bond. Thermal, chemical, and other means have been used to modify the surface of fibers, resulting in increased fiber-matrix interface bond strength. However, researchers are still dependent on empirical methods to relate surface modifications to composite performance. Additional efforts are required to develop physics-based models for micro-mechanical effects on interfacial bond strength that will be needed for the improved design and processing of fiber reinforced composites. It is anticipated that experimental, numerical, and analytical efforts will be needed to contribute toward this endeavor.
A numerical approach …

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
This article addresses the thermoelastic interaction due to inclined load on a homogeneous isotropic half-space in context of two-temperature generalized theory of thermoelasticity with dual-phase-lags. It is assumed that the inclined load is a linear combination of both normal and tangential loads. The governing equations are solved by using the normal mode analysis. The variations of the displacement, stress, conductive temperature, and thermodynamic temperature distributions with the horizontal distance have been shown graphically. Results of some earlier workers have also been deduced from the present investigation as special cases. Some comparisons are graphically presented to estimate the effects of the …

A Hybrid Optimization Technique Applied To The Intermediate-Target Optimal Control Problem, Clay J. Humphreys, Richard G. Cobb, David R. Jacques, Jonah A. Reeger
Faculty Publications
The DoD has introduced the concept of Manned-Unmanned Teaming, a subset of which is the loyal wingman. Optimal control techniques have been proposed as a method for rapidly solving the intermediate-target (mid-point constraint) optimal control problem. Initial results using direct orthogonal collocation and a gradient-based method for solving the resulting nonlinear program reveals a tendency to converge to or to get `stuck’ in locally optimal solutions. The literature suggested a hybrid technique in which a particle swarm optimization is used to quickly find a neighborhood of a more globally minimal solution, at which point the algorithm switches to a gradient-based …

The interactive nature of web applications or “web apps” makes them a well-suited medium for conveying complex scientific concepts to lay audiences and creating decision support tools that harness cutting edge modeling techniques and promote the work of environmental scientists and engineers. Despite this potential, the technical expertise required to develop web apps represents a formidable barrier—even for scientists and engineers who are skilled programmers. This paper describes four hurdles that contribute to this barrier and introduces an approach to overcoming these hurdles. We present an open source implementation of this approach, a development and hosting environment for environmental web …

With inertia and gravity representing the dominant forces for most open channel flow applications (e.g. weir flow), Froude similitude is commonly used for scaling hydraulic performance data from the model to prototype structures. With weir flow, as the upstream head decreases, however, the relevance of surface tension and viscosity forces can increase to the point when the model and prototype similitude is not fully achieved through Froude scaling. Such discrepancies are referred as size-scale effects, and among other things, can result in variations in the head–discharge relationship, nappe trajectory, and air entrainment. Published criteria for avoiding significant size-scale effects for …
