Risk Registers: Structuring Data Collection To Develop Risk Intelligence, Maria Chiara Leva, Nora Balfe, B. Mcaleer, M. Rock

Articles

This paper presents the results of the development and implementation of a company-wide risk register, based on a clear set of data structures. A case study from an electricity generation company is presented and the process followed is described. The results of the case study indicated areas where the concept of risk registers could be extended to make better use of existing data and to support continuous improvement of risk management. Six key areas are discussed (1) aggregation of risks across the business, (2) supporting controls over mitigation measures, (3) improved estimation of event likelihood, (4) integrating with critical asset …

Efficacy And Mechanistic Insights Into Endocrine Disruptor Degradation Using Atmospheric Air Plasma, Chaitanya Sarangapani, M. Danaher, Brijesh Tiwari, Peng Lu, Paula Bourke, Patrick J. Cullen

Articles

Endocrine disruptors are a class of contaminants found in water and process effluents at low concentrations. They are of concern due to their high estrogenic potency. Their presence in the environment has led to the search for effective techniques for their removal in wastewater. For this purpose, an atmospheric air plasma reactor was employed for the study of the degradation of three endocrine disruptor chemicals (EDC) namely; bisphenol A (BPA), estrone (E1) and 17β-estradiol (E2) within a model dairy effluent. Identification of the plasma induced active species both in the gas and liquid phases were performed. Also studied was the …

Directional Modulation For Compact Devices, Adam Narbudowicz, Max Ammann, Dirk Heberling Jan 2017

Directional Modulation For Compact Devices, Adam Narbudowicz, Max Ammann, Dirk Heberling

Articles

A new directional modulation system which uses radiation pattern data for modulation encoding is proposed. The approach allows compact multiport antennas (e.g. MIMO capable antennas) to be used for directional modulation, replacing extensive arrays. The modulation weighting coefficients are calculated with a fixed, antenna specific equation, thus reducing computational complexity. The solution is intended to enhance privacy in small, battery-operated wireless devices, required for “Internet of Things” applications.

Multi-Band Antenna Array Based On Double Negative Metamaterial For Multi Automotive Applications, Mohd Jamlos, Abdulrahman Alqadami,, Imtiaz Islam, Ping Soh, Rizalman Mamat, Khairil Khairi, Adam Narbudowicz

Articles

Nowadays, the demand for antennas in wireless communication system for automotive applications is rising at a rapid rate [1, 2]. Their usage includes collision avoidance system (CAS), Vehicle-to-vehicle communications, pre-crash safety systems, Global Positioning Systems (GPS), tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN), etc. To enhance its effectiveness in these new applications, a small, multi-band, multi-functional antenna is required instead of conventional single band antennas [2, 3]. Such multifunctional antennas with favourable radiation characteristics are more practical in addressing modern antenna design requirements. However, the achievement of the above mentioned antenna’s features using conventional materials and structures …

Models For The Residual Life Of Railroad Bearing Grease In Laboratory And Industry Applications, Douglas Timmer, Constantine Tarawneh, Robert Jones Jan 2017

Models For The Residual Life Of Railroad Bearing Grease In Laboratory And Industry Applications, Douglas Timmer, Constantine Tarawneh, Robert Jones

Manufacturing & Industrial Engineering Faculty Publications

Adequate lubrication in railroad bearings is crucial to the safe operation of these components. An investigation of the residual life of railroad bearing grease was conducted in a laboratory setting. The data was collected using a split-split-plot design of experiments. The Oxidation Induction Time (OIT), which is the time required for the remaining antioxidants in a sample of grease to be consumed in a test, is the response variable for this study. Low values of OIT indicate small remaining amounts of antioxidants in the grease and thus small remaining residual life in the grease. OIT measurements were made using differential …

Multi-Objective Combinatorial Optimization Problems In Transportation And Defense Systems, Hadi Farhangi Jan 2017

Multi-Objective Combinatorial Optimization Problems In Transportation And Defense Systems, Hadi Farhangi

Doctoral Dissertations

"Multi-objective Optimization problems arise in many applications; hence, solving them efficiently is important for decision makers. A common procedure to solve such problems is to generate the exact set of Pareto efficient solutions. However, if the problem is combinatorial, generating the exact set of Pareto efficient solutions can be challenging. This dissertation is dedicated to Multi-objective Combinatorial Optimization problems and their applications in system of systems architecting and railroad track inspection scheduling. In particular, multi-objective system of systems architecting problems with system flexibility and performance improvement funds have been investigated. Efficient solution methods are proposed and evaluated for not only …

Contributing Factors To Child Stunting In Guatemala: A Systems Analysis Focused On Enteric Disease Transmission And Mycotoxin Exposure, Lee Emerson Voth-Gaeddert Jan 2017

Contributing Factors To Child Stunting In Guatemala: A Systems Analysis Focused On Enteric Disease Transmission And Mycotoxin Exposure, Lee Emerson Voth-Gaeddert

Doctoral Dissertations

"Child stunting -- low height-for-age -- is a United Nation's indicator for chronic malnutrition that has been linked to both acute and chronic health problems. Data from Guatemala suggests for children under five years of age, 49% are classified as stunted. This dissertation tests the following hypotheses, among children in Guatemala 1) environmental enteric dysfunction (EED) is correlated with height-for-age, 2) aflatoxin B (AFB) exposure is correlated with height-for-age, and 3) AFB exposure is correlated with EED. A network analysis was conducted on data from the US Agency for International Development (USAID) collected in 2012 to identify trends in a …

The Application Of Digital Accelerometers For Wired And Non-Wired Mechanomyography, Niall Campbell, Thomas Egan, Catherine Deegan Jan 2017

The Application Of Digital Accelerometers For Wired And Non-Wired Mechanomyography, Niall Campbell, Thomas Egan, Catherine Deegan

Conference papers

The objective of this paper is to consider the use of digital accelerometers for Mechanomyographic applications. The digital outputs of the accelerometer require the consideration of additional interfacing hardware for any commercial data acquisition systems being considered. The Arduino open-source platform is shown to meet this requirement. This platform also provides access to set the data registers on the accelerometer to output data at the resolution, speed and format required. Results show that digital accelerometers provide an accurate representation of the MMG signal. The second objective of this work was to extend this digital platform to design a wireless MMG …
